    Resúmenes del Octavo Congreso Científico de la región de Azuero, Chitré, Herrera, 2019

    With the support of the National Secretary of Science  and Technology (SENACYT), el Centro Regional Universitario de Azuero de la Universidad de Panamá held, between September 9 and 13, 2019, the VIII Scientific Congress of the Azuero Region and the  II International Congress, under the motto: “Water is the Essence of Life, Peace and World Development”. The theme was approached holistically, considering various scenarios such as social, cultural, economic, educational, technological and health, through a series of activities, including 17 presentations, 38 conferences, 7 seminars/workshops, 4 exhibitions, 23 posters and attended by 2 165 people, including professors, professionals, students, administrators and the general public.  In this way the congress was constituted in a space that allowed national and international specialists to share knowledge and experiences, and to confirm that through the research and collaboration between countries and institutions it is possible to generate extraordinary joint initiatives conducive to the sustainability of the environment.  Below there are 18 abstracts of papers and conferences presented at the congress.Con el apoyo de la Secretaría Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología de Panamá (SENACYT), el Centro Regional Universitario de Azuero de la Universidad de Panamá realizó, entre el 9 y 13 de septiembre de 2019, el VIII Congreso Científico de la Región de Azuero y II Congreso Internacional, bajo el lema: “El Agua es Esencia de Vida, Paz y Desarrollo Mundial”. La temática del mismo fue abordada de manera holística, considerando diversos escenarios como son el social, cultural, económico, educativo, tecnológico y sanitario, mediante una serie de actividades, entre las que destacan 17 ponencias, 38 conferencias, 7 seminarios-talleres, 4 exposiciones, 23 carteles y a las que asistieron 2 165 personas, entre profesores, profesionales, estudiantes, administrativos y público en general. De esta manera el congreso se constituyó en un espacio que permitió a especialistas nacionales e internacionales compartir conocimientos y experiencias, y corroborar que mediante la investigación y la colaboración entre países e instituciones es posible la generación de extraordinarias iniciativas conjuntas conducentes a la sostenibilidad del medio ambiente.  Se presentan a continuación 18 resúmenes de ponencias y conferencias expuestas en dicho congreso

    Some text in SpanishDarién, the Easternmost province of Panamá, is species rich. Indigenous communities of Emberá, Wounaan, and Kuna peoples, depend on native plant species for building materials, food, and medicine. At the onset of this ethnobotanical study, only men were selected as traditional healers to participate; the women in the village requested participation, bringing new understanding of traditional Emberá medicine. When discussions became regional everyone, including the botánicos of Ipetí, admitted that some measure of validation was necessary.
