The practice of sports by resident communities is a tool for healthy lifestyles, inclusive growth and the promotion of sustainable cities. Nevertheless, the relationship between sport, tourism and recreation still remain an under researched theme. Focusing on the economic pillar of sustainability, this study intends to quantify and analyse the economic costs incurred by families in formal and informal sport practices, as well as the contribution of these activities and related events to the territory's image projection and attractiveness, by overlapping resident's and visitor's perception of sports in the destination. Applied to the municipality of Guimaraes (Portugal), this analysis of the sports consumer's behaviour contributes to filling the gap of knowledge resulting from the studies that, as a rule, exclusively evaluate the investments (supply) and/or the expenses (demand) of events and not the regular practice of sport. A total of 179 questionnaires were applied to residents throughout 2017, through the self-administrate questionnaire method. Findings reveal that residents see sports as one of the factors contributing to the identity of the municipality, underlying motivations for participation as the search for happiness, health, wellbeing, and fun. Expenditures generate multiplier effects in the local economy, allowing to compare growth scenarios. This analysis is a scientific instrument to support territorial innovation and the decision at the local level of public policies for sustainable development, in agreement with objective eight of sustainability defined by the United Nations.Funding Agency Municipality of Guimaraes/Sports Studies Centre of Guimaraesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the basis of the concept of sustainable development and refers to the optimal level of space use for tourist purposes. In doing so, a special attention is mostly paid to negative impacts of tourism on space, i.e. the necessity of spatial limitation of tourism development in order to preserve and protect natural and created resources. An intensive and uncontrolled development of tourism in the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century caused the degradation of the environment, the destruction of ecosystems and other social and cultural conflicts in the tourist area. For these reasons, it is necessary to align the planning of the future development of tourism with the principles of sustainable development by using different indicators. The main goal of this paper is to analyze various indicators of sustainable development that determine the possibility of using space in tourism, as well as sustainable tourism development. When selecting the indicators of future development, certain criteria must be taken into consideration, such as the criterion of relevance, feasibility (availability), credibility, and so on. The essence of use of the indicators is to determine the optimal number of potential visitors and facilities in the tourist area, without significantly affecting the environment, reducing the quality of tourist experience (sensation) or jeopardizing the sense of identity, lifestyle and activities of the domicile population

Purpose – This paper studies the problems and specific issues related to tourism and coastal urbanism, namely through an analysis of the tourist\u27s, the resident’s and tourism management\u27s evaluation of the elements of the tourist offer related to space, environment and sustainable development in the tourist region of Kvarner (Croatia). Design - The strategic guidelines for tourism development must be based on the principles of sustainable development, that is, on a balanced relation between the economic, physical, environmental and social factors of development. This includes the preservation of urban and spatial alignment and overall development. Methodology / Approach – Empirical research was conducted using a sophisticated questionnaire adapted to each target group (tourists, residents, tourism management), printed in Croatian, English, German and Italian. A Likert scale with both open- and closed ended questions was used, ranging from 1(worst) to 7 (best). The latter part of the questionnaire evaluated 37 tourism offer elements. The collected questionnaires were encrypted and statistically analysed. The method of one-to-one interviewing was mostly used in gathering data, although the questionnaire was self-administered by respondents in a small number of cases. Findings – It is indicative that tourists (5.79) have, on the average, rated the elements of the tourism offering with a higher score than residents (5.31), while the score given by tourism management is somewhere in between (5.61). This suggests that residents are more critical, but also more aware, of the need for improvement in all elements of the tourism offering. Priority is given to the natural factors (5.56). These results indicate that all target groups agree that natural factors - space, resources and the environment- must be protected. Originality of the research – This study provides reliable and actual basic quantitative and qualitative information about the attitudes of tourists, residents and tourism management toward the tourism offer of Kvarner and its destinations
