    Hair Transplantation: Current Concepts and Techniques

    Because of changes in technique, hair transplanting can now be offered as a reasonable option to more male and female patients who are not responsive to, or likely to benefit from, medical treatment. These changes have also resulted in exceptionally natural-looking results, even after a single session in an alopecic area, or in many individuals with prior and cosmetically unacceptable transplanting results. Current concepts and techniques are described in the article. Possible disadvantages of some of them are also discussed. In particular, the apparent advantages of “megasessions” of 3000 or more grafts per session, “dense packing” of more than 40 follicular units per cm2 and a new method of harvesting single follicular units directly from the donor area (Follicular Unit Extraction), may not be advantageous as they first seem

    Conceptual Framework to Guide Early Diagnosis Programs for Symptomatic Cancer as Part of Global Cancer Control.

    Diagnosing cancer earlier can enable timely treatment and optimize outcomes. Worldwide, national cancer control plans increasingly encompass early diagnosis programs for symptomatic patients, commonly comprising awareness campaigns to encourage prompt help-seeking for possible cancer symptoms and health system policies to support prompt diagnostic assessment and access to treatment. By their nature, early diagnosis programs involve complex public health interventions aiming to address unmet health needs by acting on patient, clinical, and system factors. However, there is uncertainty regarding how to optimize the design and evaluation of such interventions. We propose that decisions about early diagnosis programs should consider four interrelated components: first, the conduct of a needs assessment (based on cancer-site-specific statistics) to identify the cancers that may benefit most from early diagnosis in the target population; second, the consideration of symptom epidemiology to inform prioritization within an intervention; third, the identification of factors influencing prompt help-seeking at individual and system level to support the design and evaluation of interventions; and finally, the evaluation of factors influencing the health systems' capacity to promptly assess patients. This conceptual framework can be used by public health researchers and policy makers to identify the greatest evidence gaps and guide the design and evaluation of local early diagnosis programs as part of broader cancer control strategies

    A Magellan-IMACS-IFU Search for Dynamical Drivers of Nuclear Activity. I. Reduction Pipeline and Galaxy Catalog

    Using the Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph (IMACS) integral-field unit (IFU) on the 6.5m Magellan telescope, we have designed the first statistically significant investigation of the two-dimensional distribution and kinematics of ionized gas and stars in the central kiloparsec regions of a well-matched sample of Seyfert and inactive control galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The goals of the project are to use the fine spatial sampling (0.2 arcsec/pixel) and large wavelength coverage (4000-7000A) of the IMACS-IFU to search for dynamical triggers of nuclear activity in the central region where active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity and dynamical timescales become comparable, to identify and assess the impact of AGN-driven outflows on the host galaxy and to provide a definitive sample of local galaxy kinematics for comparison with future three-dimensional kinematic studies of high-redshift systems. In this paper, we provide the first detailed description of the procedure to reduce and calibrate data from the IMACS-IFU in `long mode' to obtain two-dimensional maps of the distribution and kinematics of ionized gas and stars. The sample selection criteria are presented, observing strategy described and resulting maps of the sample galaxies presented along with a description of the observed properties of each galaxy and the overall observed properties of the sample.Comment: 62 pages. 41 figures. 5 tables.     Reddening, Emission-Line, and Intrinsic Absorption Properties in the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy Akn 564

    We use Hubble Space Telescope UV and optical spectra of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Akn 564 to investigate its internal reddening and properties of its emission-line and intrinsic UV absorption gas. We find that the extinction curve of Akn 564, derived from a comparison of its UV/optical continuum to that of an unreddened NLS1, lacks a 2200 A bump and turns up towards the UV at a longer wavelength (4000 A) than the standard Galactic, LMC, and SMC curves. However, it does not show the extremely steep rise to 1200 A that characterizes the extinction curve of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3227. The emission-lines and continuum experience the same amount of reddening, indicating the presence of a dust screen that is external to the narrow-line region (NLR). Echelle spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph show intrinsic UV absorption lines due to Ly-alpha, N V, C IV, Si IV, and Si III, centered at a radial velocity of -190 km/s (relative to the host galaxy). Photoionization models of the UV absorber indicate that it has a sufficient columnand is at a sufficient distance from the nucleus (D > 95 pc) to be the source of the dust screen. Thus, Akn 564 contains a dusty ``lukewarm absorber'' similar to that seen in NGC 3227.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures. LaTeX with encapsulated postscript figures.     A New Monte Carlo Algorithm for Protein Folding

    We demonstrate that the recently proposed pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (P. Grassberger, Phys. Rev. E 56 (1997) 3682) leads to extremely efficient algorithms for the folding of simple model proteins. We test them on several models for lattice heteropolymers, and compare to published Monte Carlo studies. In all cases our algorithms are faster than all previous ones, and in several cases we find new minimal energy states.     Gas and dust in a submillimeter galaxy at z = 4.24 from the Herschel ATLAS

    We report ground-based follow-up observations of the exceptional source, ID141, one the brightest sources detected so far in the H-ATLAS cosmological survey. ID141 was observed using the IRAM 30-meter telescope and Plateau de Bure interferometer (PdBI), the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) submillimeter telescope to measure the dust continuum and emission lines of the main isotope of carbon monoxide and carbon ([C I] and [C II]). The detection of strong CO emission lines with the PdBI confirms that ID141 is at high redshift (z=4.243 +/- 0.001). The strength of the continuum and emission lines suggests that ID141 is gravitationally lensed. The width (Delta V (FWHM) ~ 800 km/s}) and asymmetric profiles of the CO and carbon lines indicate orbital motion in a disc or a merger. The properties derived for ID141 are compatible with a ultraluminous (L_FIR ~ 8.5 +/- 0.3 x 10^13/mu_L Lsun, where mu_L is the amplification factor, dense (n ~ 10^4 cm^-3) and warm (T_kin ~ 40K) starburst galaxy, with an estimated star-formation rate of (0.7 to 1.7) x 10^4/mu_L Msun/yr. The carbon emission lines indicate a dense (n ~ 10^4 cm^-3) Photo-Dominated Region, illuminated by a far-UV radiation field a few thousand times more intense than that in our Galaxy. In conclusion, the physical properties of the high-z galaxy, ID141, are remarkably similar to those of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies.Comment: To appear in Ap

    More than a decade ago the IRAS satellite opened the realm of external galaxies for studies in the 10 to 100 micron band and discovered emission from tens of thousands of normal and active galaxies. With the 1995-1998 mission of the Infrared Space Observatory the next major steps in extragalactic infrared astronomy became possible: detailed imaging, spectroscopy and spectro-photometry of many galaxies detected by IRAS, as well as deep surveys in the mid- and far- IR. The spectroscopic data reveal a wealth of detail about the nature of the energy source(s) and about the physical conditions in galaxies. ISO's surveys for the first time explore the infrared emission of distant, high-redshift galaxies.     ROCK1/2 signaling contributes to corticosteroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease

    Patients with corticosteroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) have a low one-year survival rate. Identification and validation of novel targetable kinases in patients who experience corticosteroid-refractory-aGVHD may help improve outcomes. Kinase-specific proteomics of leukocytes from patients with corticosteroid-refractory-GVHD identified rho kinase type 1 (ROCK1) as the most significantly upregulated kinase. ROCK1/2 inhibition improved survival and histological GVHD severity in mice and was synergistic with JAK1/2 inhibition, without compromising graft-versus-leukemia-effects. ROCK1/2-inhibition in macrophages or dendritic cells prior to transfer reduced GVHD severity. Mechanistically, ROCK1/2 inhibition or ROCK1 knockdown interfered with CD80, CD86, MHC-II expression and IL-6, IL-1β, iNOS and TNF production in myeloid cells. This was accompanied by impaired T cell activation by dendritic cells and inhibition of cytoskeletal rearrangements, thereby reducing macrophage and DC migration. NF-κB signaling was reduced in myeloid cells following ROCK1/2 inhibition. In conclusion, ROCK1/2 inhibition interferes with immune activation at multiple levels and reduces acute GVHD while maintaining GVL-effects, including in corticosteroid-refractory settings
