    The Prediction of Fetal Maturity and Gestational Age by Ultrasonic Measurement of Distal Femoral Epiphyseal Secondary Ossification Center

    Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the diameters of the distal femoral epiphyseal secondary ossification center (DFOC) in thevarious gestational ages (GAs) as well as to create a novel equation, through which GA can be calculated from the measurement of DFOC. Materials and Methods: EDAN Digital ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system (model DUS 3 made by EDAN, Korea) and a 3.5MHz Convex transducer were used for the sonographic measurement. Ultrasonographic examinations were performed on 999 normal singleton pregnancies with GAs ranging from the 28th to the 41st weeks. Patients were recruited from the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital to Assurance Medical Diagnostic Center, where the ultrasonographic examinations were carried out. Images of the long axis of the fetal femur were taken. The DFOC was visualized as a small echogenic, ovoid structure lying adjacent to the distal femur. Three measurements of the DFOC diameter (in mm) were taken from outer to outer margins, and the largest diameter was recorded. Other measurements obtained include femur length, abdominal circumference biparietal diameter, head circumference, fetal weight (FW), and GA. Results: DFOC increased with GA. A strong positive relationship was observed between DFOC and GA with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.85. DFOC also increased with FW with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.83. The equation (GA = 30.84 + [1.25 × DFOC in mm]) relates GA to DFOC. Conclusion: The diameter of the distal femoral epiphyseal secondary ossification center is a useful parameter for estimating GA and assessment of fetal maturity in the third trimester.     In-Vitro Effect of some Commonly Found Botanicals on the Growth and Sporulation of Choanephora Cucurbitarum (Berkeley and Ravenel)

    A soft rot infection of Abelmoschus esculentus, Amaranthus hybridus and Vigna unguiculata was observed in home gardens and Government farms in the 2010 cropping season. This disease caused remarkable yield loss in these crops. Due to residual effects of synthetic chemical control, it became necessary to test the potency of some botanicals on the growth and  sporulation of the fungus as a control measure.  The  procedures involved isolation and identification of the fungus and potency trials of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the  botanicals on the assay fungus. The isolated fungus was confirmed  as Choanephora cucurbitarum. The extracts were obtained from Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Gmelina arborea Roxb, Chromolaena odorata Linnaeus and Azadirachta indica A. Juss. Different concentrations of the extracts (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) were used. With ethanol extract, there was complete inhibition of growth by all plant extracts and at all concentrations;  and a little growth in aqueous extracts with Azadirachta indica showing the highest inhibitory effect, while C. odorata showed the lowest inhibitory effect on the first day, (A. indica, 0.1 ± 0.0 ≥ G. arborea, 0.1 ± 0.0 ˃ Z. officinale, 0.2 ± 0.0 ˃ C. odorata, 0.3 ± 0.0). On the last day, the level of inhibition was as follows A. indica, 0.4 ± 0.0 ˃ G. arborea, 0.6 ± 0.0 ˃ Z. officinale, 0.7 ± 0.0 ≥ C. odorata 0.7 ± 0.0. The inhibitory effect increased with increase in the percentage concentration of the extracts. The  potency  was also due in part to the phytochemical constituents of the plant extracts which was observed from the screening test that Saponins, Tannins, Alkaloids, Cardiac glycosides, Flavonoids, Reducing Compounds, Polyphenol, Phlobatannins, Anthraquinones and Hydroxymethyl anthraquinones were either present or absent.     The Luminous Blue Variable RMC127 as seen with ALMA and ATCA

    We present ALMA and ATCA observations of the luminous blue variable \rmc. The radio maps show for the first time the core of the nebula and evidence that the nebula is strongly asymmetric with a Z-pattern shape. Hints of this morphology are also visible in the archival \emph{HST} Hα\rm H\alpha image, which overall resembles the radio emission. The emission mechanism in the outer nebula is optically thin free-free in the radio. At high frequencies, a component of point-source emission appears at the position of the star, up to the ALMA frequencies. The rising flux density distribution (Sνν0.78±0.05S_{\nu}\sim \nu^{0.78\pm0.05}) of this object suggests thermal emission from the ionized stellar wind and indicates a departure from spherical symmetry with ne(r)r2n_{e}(r)\propto r^{-2}. We examine different scenarios to explain this excess of thermal emission from the wind and show that this can arise from a bipolar outflow, supporting the suggestion by other authors that the stellar wind of \rmc is aspherical. We fit the data with two collimated ionized wind models and we find that the mass-loss rate can be a factor of two or more smaller than in the spherical case. We also fit the photometry obtained by IR space telescopes and deduce that the mid- to far-IR emission must arise from extended, cool (80K\sim80\,\rm K) dust within the outer ionized nebula. Finally we discuss two possible scenarios for the nebular morphology: the canonical single star expanding shell geometry, and a precessing jet model assuming presence of a companion star.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (minor revision included

    EFFECT OF RELATIVE SOWING TIME ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF VEGETABLE COWPEA (VIGNA UNGUICULATA (L.) WALP) AND MAIZE (ZEA MAYS L.) IN VEGETABLE COWPEA/MAIZE INTERCROPPING SYSTEM

    Improved varieties of both vegetable cowpea (IT92KD-263-4-1) and maize (OBA 98) were grown in mixture at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike research farm for two cropping seasons (2006 and 2007) in order to determine the suitable relative sowing time of the component crops. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design and with three replicates. The treatments were vegetable cowpea and maize separately planted in their pure stands, vegetable cowpea and maize simultaneously sown on the same day, vegetable cowpea sown 2, 3, 4 weeks before maize and vegetable cowpea introduced 2, 3 and 4 weeks after maize was sown. Widest leaf area, heaviest total aboveground dry matter and nodules per plant of vegetable cowpea were attributed to the vegetable cowpea sown 4 weeks before maize. Similarly, maize leaf area index, aboveground dry matter, number of grains per cob, 100-seed weight and grain yield per hectare were highest when maize was sown 4 weeks before introducing vegetable cowpea. The highest LER of 1.61 and 1.58 in 2006 and 2007, respectively were attributed to the vegetable cowpea sown 4 weeks after maize. It was therefore, recommended that the resource poor rural farmers should introduce the vegetable cowpea 4 weeks after sowing the maize seeds since they usually target the combined yield from the component crops of the farmlandÂ

    New tools in percutaneous minimally invasive chronic subdural hematomas evacuation

    Background: Incidence of chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH) is expected to progressive rise in the next decades. There is no univocal indication of the approach to be used. Furthermore, there is no data about the efficacy of twist drill craniostomy (TDC) in hematomas with membranes. Objective: To describe our modified technique for TDC in patients affected by cSDH with membranes and in treatment with antiplatelets. Methods: We analyzed a group of 37 patients, affected by cSDH with membrane (type D laminar membrane and type G trabecular membrane according to Nakaguchi classification), treated with mushroom TDC using a modified technique. Results: After surgery the average maximum thickness of the common postoperative liquoral subdural collection decreased from 18.8 to 6.21 mm. We documented one acute subdural hematoma (2.7%), asymptomatic and not treated, and one recurrence of cSDH (2.7%) after 2 months that needed re-intervention with single burr hole. Conclusions: We presented a modified twist drill technique, characterized by the introduction of an application of a new device that optimizes both surgical results, clinical outcome and surgical procedure time. The presence of membrane type D and G does not affect the efficacy of drainage, that is negatively related to the presence of clots or acute hematoma. This modified technique is safe, fast, effective and represents a valid first line treatment of an unstable and unpredictable pathology such as cSDH. We suggest performing such technique on a larger patients’ cohort to further validate its effectiveness

    Romantic Relationship Experiences from Late Adolescence to Young Adulthood: The Role of Older Siblings in Mexican-Origin Families

    Youth\u27s experiences with romantic relationships during adolescence and young adulthood have far reaching implications for future relationships, health, and well-being; yet, although scholars have examined potential peer and parent influences, we know little about the role of siblings in youth\u27s romantic relationships. Accordingly, this study examined the prospective longitudinal links between Mexican-origin older and younger siblings\u27 romantic relationship experiences and variation by sibling structural and relationship characteristics (i.e., sibling age and gender similarity, younger siblings\u27 modeling) and cultural values (i.e., younger siblings\u27 familism values). Data from 246 Mexican-origin families with older (M = 20.65 years; SD = 1.57; 50% female) and younger (M = 17.72 years; SD = .57; 51% female) siblings were used to examine the likelihood of younger siblings\u27 involvement in dating relationships, sexual relations, cohabitation, and engagement/marriage with probit path analyses. Findings revealed older siblings\u27 reports of involvement in a dating relationship, cohabitation, and engagement/marriage predicted younger siblings\u27 relationship experiences over a two-year period. These links were moderated by sibling age spacing, younger siblings\u27 reports of modeling and familism values. Our findings suggest the significance of social learning dynamics as well as relational and cultural contexts in understanding the links between older and younger siblings\u27 romantic relationship experiences among Mexican-origin youth

    A Spectroscopic Study of Mass Outflows in the Interacting Binary RY Scuti

    The massive interacting binary RY Scuti is an important representative of an active mass-transferring system that is changing before our eyes and which may be an example of the formation of a Wolf-Rayet star through tidal stripping. Utilizing new and previously published spectra, we present examples of how a number of illustrative absorption and emission features vary during the binary orbit. We identify spectral features associated with each component, calculate a new, double-lined spectroscopic binary orbit, and find masses of 7.1 +/- 1.2 M_sun for the bright supergiant and 30.0 +/- 2.1 M_sun for the hidden massive companion. Through tomographic reconstruction of the component spectra from the composite spectra, we confirm the O9.7 Ibpe spectral class of the bright supergiant and discover a B0.5 I spectrum associated with the hidden massive companion; however, we suggest that the latter is actually the spectrum of the photosphere of the accretion torus immediately surrounding the massive companion. We describe the complex nature of the mass loss flows from the system in the context of recent hydrodynamical models for beta Lyr, leading us to conclude RY Scuti has matter leaving the system in two ways: 1) a bipolar outflow from winds generated by the hidden massive companion, and 2) mass from the bright O9.7 Ibpe supergiant flowing from the region near the L2 point to fill out a large, dense circumbinary disk.     Humanised IgG1 antibody variants targeting membrane-bound carcinoembryonic antigen by antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity and phagocytosis

    BACKGROUND: The effect of glycoengineering a membrane specific anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) (this paper uses the original term CEA for the formally designated CEACAM5) antibody (PR1A3) on its ability to enhance killing of colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines by human immune effector cells was assessed. In vivo efficacy of the antibody was also tested. METHODS: The antibody was modified using EBNA cells cotransfected with beta-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase III and the humanised hPR1A3 antibody genes. RESULTS: The resulting alteration of the Fc segment glycosylation pattern enhances the antibody's binding affinity to the FcgammaRIIIa receptor on human immune effector cells but does not alter the antibody's binding capacity. Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) is inhibited in the presence of anti-FcgammaRIII blocking antibodies. This glycovariant of hPR1A3 enhances ADCC 10-fold relative to the parent unmodified antibody using either unfractionated peripheral blood mononuclear or natural killer (NK) cells and CEA-positive CRC cells as targets. NK cells are far more potent in eliciting ADCC than either freshly isolated monocytes or granulocytes. Flow cytometry and automated fluorescent microscopy have been used to show that both versions of hPR1A3 can induce antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP) by monocyte-derived macrophages. However, the glycovariant antibody did not mediate enhanced ADCP. This may be explained by the relatively low expression of FcgammaRIIIa on cultured macrophages. In vivo studies show the efficacy of glycoengineered humanised IgG1 PR1A3 in significantly improving survival in a CRC metastatic murine model. CONCLUSION: The greatly enhanced in vitro ADCC activity of the glycoengineered version of hPR1A3 is likely to be clinically beneficial
