Patricia Akhimie. Shakespeare and the Cultivation of Difference: Race and Conduct in the Early Modern World. Routledge, 2018. 220 pp.

In lieu of an abstract, here is the review\u27s first paragraph: In Shakespeare and the Cultivation of Difference, Patricia Akhimie sets an ambitious goal: in addition to exploring how race, class, conduct, and drama are intertwined in the early modern period, Akhimie seeks to show readers how to recognize the pain of racism, which she reads as “a persistent and particular kind of injustice, the signs of which are as fluid as they are injurious” (9). Despite the variability of signs of human differences and despite the promise of self-improvement offered by conduct literature, Akhimie argues that social immobility was the reality for many groups within early modern English society. This immobility stemed from the identification of somatic markers “like indelible blackness,” (5) and “the workings of racist thinking that link a social process of differentiation . . . to the naturalization of such differences” (11). To accomplish what she calls an “emancipatory task” (10), Akhimie examines an impressive range of primary materials. She focuses on four Shakespeare plays, Othello, The Comedy of Errors, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Tempest, which she pairs with surprisingly diverse yet relevant forms of conduct books devoted to “specific cultivating strategies” in the realms of travel, housekeeping, husbandry, and hunting

Greek Tragic Women on Shakespearean Stages by Tanya Pollard (review)

In lieu of an abstract, here is the review\u27s first paragraph: In this clearly written and thoroughly researched book, Pollard argues that ancient Greek tragedies influenced sixteenth-century theater significantly more than previously thought. Pollard offers evidence of their availability and popularity during the early modern period and includes several useful appendices listing sixteenth-century editions of Greek plays in Greek, Latin and vernacular languages as well as performances of plays by or based on Greek playwrights. Pollard finds additional proof in the echoes of Greek tragic icons in a variety of sixteenth-century plays, which she analyzes to better understand the “complex process of literary transmission” and “an explicitly theatrical model for intertextual engagement” (3)

We will review the Ambra publishing platform, the "Web 2.0" features built to foster collaboration and participation, and its new methods for disseminating and sharing scientific information.Moore Foundatio

Influence of channel base current and varying return stroke speed on the calculated fields of three important return stroke models

    Get PDF
Compared here are the calculated fields of the Traveling Current Source (TCS), Modified Transmission Line (MTL), and the Diendorfer-Uman (DU) models with a channel base current assumed in Nucci et al. on the one hand and with the channel base current assumed in Diendorfer and Uman on the other hand. The characteristics of the field wave shapes are shown to be very sensitive to the channel base current, especially the field zero crossing at 100 km for the TCS and DU models, and the magnetic hump after the initial peak at close range for the TCS models. Also, the DU model is theoretically extended to include any arbitrarily varying return stroke speed with height. A brief discussion is presented on the effects of an exponentially decreasing speed with height on the calculated fields for the TCS, MTL, and DU models

Kata Kunci: karakteristik, teks sastra, Bahasa Indonesia, SMP, reseptif-tekstual   Abstract This paper aims to describe some of the characteristics of the types of literary texts contained in Indonesian Language at the Junior High School level. Some types of literary texts include description texts, fantasy story texts, folk poetry texts, fable texts, poetry texts, review texts, drama texts, short story texts, and inspiring story texts. To be able to describe the characteristics of types of literary texts, the method used is descriptive qualitative method. With this method it is expected to be able to provide adequate understanding and explanation in connection with empirical facts relating to the type of literary text discussed. The main data source used in this paper is the Indonesian student textbooks for classes VII, VIII, and IX 2013 curriculum published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. To complete the qualitative descriptive method, the receptive-textual approach will be used as a guide in exploring and developing the discussion of the characteristics of literary text types to be more directed, focused, and comprehensive, so that readers can capture the message conveyed in this paper optimally. Keywords: characteristics, literary texts, Indonesian, junior high school, receptive-textua

This article is a review of a book on research methodology. The book covers a broader range of issues than is usually covered in the training of scientists. It deals with the aims and limitations of science and how one may distinguish between science and other forms of intellectual activity. The book offers elaborate coverage of the process of science, the uncertainties involved in it, and the issues of ethics and integrity. Thus, it delves into areas essential for the practice of science. It equips the reader with the conceptual repertoire and the critical outlook necessary to perform and write about science in a responsible manner. The book is highly recommended for both science students and practicing scientists

    Creating Seneca Falls Dialogues Journal

After six years of productive collaboration, we realized, somewhat reluctantly, that it was time to hand over the editorial reins to other members of the SFD team. We are reluctant, only because we have so enjoyed working together and with our colleagues on a project about which we feel proud. As we reflect upon our editorial journey, it is especially meaningful to glance back at three extraordinary volumes, each published in the spirit of the journal’s founding principles of feminist agency and voice. We both look forward to supporting the journal as members of the editorial board and are excited to see what our talented friends and colleagues, Mary, Lisa and Jill will do with the next iterations of the Seneca Falls Dialogues Journal

Light Quark Resonances in pbar p Annihilations at 5.2 GeV/c

Data from the Fermilab E835 experiment have been used to study the reaction pbar p -> eta eta pi0 at 5.2 GeV/c. A sample of 22 million six photons events has been analyzed to construct the Dalitz plot containing ~80k eta eta pi0 events. A partial wave analysis of the data has been done. Six f_J-states decaying into eta eta and five a_J-states decaying into eta pi0 are identified in the mass region ~1.3 and 2.4 GeV, and their masses, widths and spins are determined by maximum likelihood analysis of the data. Two f_0 states are identified with the popular candidates for the lightest scalar glueball, f_0(1500) and f_0(1710).Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
