When Family Love Strangles and Love Outside the Family Disappoints: The Irish Family in the Early Novels of Kate OāBrien and Edna OāBrien
This paper sets out to examine various representations of the patriarchal Irish family, constricting family ties, and the role of women within the family in Kate OāBrienās novels The Ante-Room (1934) and Mary Lavelle (1936) and Edna OāBrienās The Country Girls Trilogy (The Country Girls (1960), Lonely Girl (1962) and Girls in Their Married Bliss (1964)). The paper attempts to demonstrate that in these works both authors more or less openly defy the Church-state conception of the ideal family and the ground tenets of Catholicism of their time. The aim of the analysis is to show that the novels represent the family as a highly repressive force which constantly supervises women and holds their desires in check throughout their lives. Keywords: Kate OāBrien, Edna OāBrien, early novels, Irish family, Catholicism
Middle-Aged Menās Traumas and Elusive Freedom in Hanif Kureishiās Short Stories
This paper sets out to explore a notion of freedom that Hanif Kureishi articulates in his short stories, focusing particularly on the collections Love in a Blue Time (1997) and Midnight All Day (1999). Kureishiās stories almost always narrated from the point of view of a middle-aged man are here analysed in the light of Zygmunt Baumannās theories of liquid modernity and liquid love. The paper attempts to demonstrate that these men are confined to a sort of a perpetual treadmill of misery. It is argued that most protagonists of his stories are largely unable to manage their lives and relationships, living in a contemporary world that allows individuals to enjoy excesses of freedom and infinite possibilities
Labor Market Need Analysis as Basis for the Foundedness of Occupational Standards in the Field of Maritime Management
This paper presents the results of a maritime sector labor market research conducted to identify key tasks, specific knowledge and skills required for the development of appropriate occupational standards in the field of maritime management. Data were collected by survey of a sample of potential employers for the professions of āManager in Marinas and Nautical Tourismā and āMaritime Personnel Training and Education Coordinatorā. Research results indicate both professions are recognized by prospective employers and that appropriate standards need to be developed
Interactions of Phenolic Acids and Ī²-Glucan: Studies of Adsorption Isotherms and Thermodynamics
Interactions between polyphenols and dietary fiber might play an important role in polyphenol bioactivities. These interactions can be studied through adsorption processes. The aim of this study was to investigate the adsorption of phenolic acids (p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid) onto dietary fiber ā Ī²-glucan. Adsorption was carried out at different temperatures (25, 37, and 45 Ā°C) and pH values (1.5, 5.5, and 10). Non-linear isotherm adsorption models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Temkin, Hill) were applied to analyze the data. Experimentally determined adsorption capacities showed some fluctuations with temperature and pH. Adsorption isotherms modelled the experimentally determined adsorption capacities well. According to isotherm parameters, it can be suggested that the adsorption was a physical process with non-covalent bonding at all temperatures and pH. Thermodynamic parameters showed
that the adsorption was spontaneous (except for chlorogenic acid) and exothermic. Adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics gave useful information about phenolic acid ā Ī²-glucan interactions.

POLITICS AND SPORT : THE CASE OF THE EUROPEAN BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN ATHENS 1995
Na osnovi relevantne literature, koristeÄi kvalitativne istraživaÄke metode: polu-strukturirane intervjue, analizu sadržaja i analizu diskursa, nastojat Äemo proÅ”iriti razumijevanje odnosa navedenih fenomena u hrvatskom kontekstu.Sport and politics in the Croatian socio-political context are intertwined since the founding of Croatia as an independent nation-state. To understand the relations between sports and politics in the region, the case of European Basketball Championship 1995, when the national basketball team last achieved significant succes seems particulary interesting. This case demands systematic sociological research. Existing analyses have populist nature and as such are insufficient for understanding this topic. Despite many achievements and the important role of basketball in broader social context, there is almost no research that would enable deeper understanding of this subject.
The aim of this paper is to explain the relationship between sports and politics in this particular case. Based on relevant literature, using qualitative research methods: semi-structured interviews, content analysis and discourse analysis, we will try to expand the understanding of relationship of these phenomena in the Croatian context
The Study of Adsorption Kinetics of Flavan-3-Ols, Dihydrochalcones and Anthocyanins onto Barley Ī²-Glucan
Polyphenols can interact with dietary fibers and these interactions can affect polyphenols bioactivities. The interactions can be studied with the adsorption process, and adsorptions of flavan-3-ols (procyanidin B1, procyanidin B2), dihydrochalcones (phloretin, phloretin-2-glucoside), and anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-galactoside) onto Ī²-D-glucan from barley were studied in this work. The intention was to reveal the kinetics of the adsorption process.
Adsorption was carried out using model solutions at room temperature. The results showed that in the flavan-3-ol group procyanidin B1 showed higher adsorption capacity than procyanidin B2. Phloretin showed a higher adsorption capacity than phloretin-2-glucoside in the dihydrochalcone group and anthocyanins showed similar adsorption capacities. Parameter k1 for all polyphenols was in the range from 0.30 hā1 to 0.93 hā1. Adsorption capacity qe for all polyphenols ranged from 2.90 mmol gā1 to 9.76 mmol gā1, parameter k2 was in the range 70ā
225 g molā1 hā1, and adsorption capacities qe ranged from 3.70 mmol gā1 to 9.90 mmol gā1
