Light energy allocation at PSII under field light conditions: How much energy is lost in NPQ-associated dissipation?

In the field, plants are exposed to fluctuating light, where photosynthesis occurs under conditions far from a steady state. Excess energy dissipation associated with energy quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (qE) functions as an efficient photo-protection mechanism in photosystem II. PsbS is an important regulator of qE, especially for the induction phase of qE. Beside the regulatory energy dissipation, some part of energy is lost through relaxation of excited chlorophyll molecules. To date, several models to quantify energy loss through these dissipative pathways in PSII have been proposed. In this short review, we compare and evaluate these models for PSII energy allocation when they are applied to non-steady state photosynthesis. As a case study, an investigation on energy allocation to qE-associated dissipation at PSII under non-steady state photosynthesis using PsbS-deficient rice transformants is introduced. Diurnal and seasonal changes in PSII energy allocation in rice under natural light are also presented. Future perspective of studies on PSII energy allocation is discussed

A Retrospective Study of Canine Idiopathic Epilepsy in Referral Centers in Japan

Idiopathic epilepsy (IE) is one of the most common neurologic disorder in dogs. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical data of dogs with IE in Japan and to search for predisposing factors of IE for further investigation. Medical records and clinical information of dogs diagnosed with IE at 2 referral centers between April 2013 and March 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. It was conducted according to the consensus statement published by International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force. A total of 70 dogs were used with a median (range) weight of 5.15 (1.85–79.85) kg and age at initial epileptic seizure onset of 4.2 (0.3–11.8) years. Fortyfour dogs were male, and 26 were female. Toy Poodles were over-represented in the present study indicating that this breed may be predisposed to IE and would be a candidate for gene study to elucidate the cause of IE in dogs

Seismic noise-based methods for soft-rock landslide characterization

International audienceIn order to better understand the mechanics and dynamic of landslides, it is of primary interest to image correctly their internal structure. Several active geophysical methods are able to provide the geometry of a given landslide, but were rarely applied in 3 dimensions in the past. The main disadvantages of methods like seismic reflection or electrical tomographies are that there are heavy to set up, require for some heavy processing tools to implement, and consequently are expensive and time consuming. Moreover, in the particular case of soft-rock landslides, their respective sensitivity and resolution are not always adequate to locate the potential slip surfaces. The passive methods, which require lighter instrumentation and easier processing tools, can represent an interesting alternative, particularly for difficult accessible landslides. Among them, the seismic noise based methods have shown increasing applications and developments, in particular for seismic hazard mapping in urban environment. In this paper, we present seismic noise investigations carried out on two different sites, a mudslide and a translational clayey landslide where independent measurements (geotechnical and geophysical tests) were performed earlier. Our investigations were composed of H/V measurements, which are fast and easy to perform in the field, in order to image shear wave contrasts (slip surfaces), and seismic noise array method, which is heavier to apply and interpret, but provides S-waves velocity profile versus depth. The comparisons between geophysical investigations and geotechnical information proved the applicability of such passive methods in 3D complexes, but also some limitations. Indeed interpretation of these measurements can be tricky in rough and non-homogeneous terrains
