Formation of a rotating jet during the filament eruption on 10-11 April 2013

We analyze multi-wavelength and multi-viewpoint observations of a helically twisted plasma jet formed during a confined filament eruption on 10-11 April 2013. Given a rather large scale event with its high spatial and temporal resolution observations, it allows us to clearly understand some new physical details about the formation and triggering mechanism of twisting jet. We identify a pre-existing flux rope associated with a sinistral filament, which was observed several days before the event. The confined eruption of the filament within a null point topology, also known as an Eiffel tower (or inverted-Y) magnetic field configuration results in the formation of a twisted jet after the magnetic reconnection near a null point. The sign of helicity in the jet is found to be the same as that of the sign of helicity in the filament. Untwisting motion of the reconnected magnetic field lines gives rise to the accelerating plasma along the jet axis. The event clearly shows the twist injection from the pre-eruptive magnetic field to the jet.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, to appear in MNRA

Role of non-timber forest products in sustaining forest-based livelihoods and rural households' resilience capacity in and around protected area- a Bangladesh study

People in developing world derive a significant part of their livelihoods from various forest products, particularly non-timber forest products. This article attempts to explore the contribution of NTFPs in sustaining forest-based rural livelihood in and around a protected area of Bangladesh, and their potential role in enhancing households resilience capacity. Based on empirical investigation our study revealed that, local communities gather a substantial amount of NTFPs from national park despite the official restrictions. 27 percent households of the area received at least some cash benefit from the collection, processing and selling of NTFPs, and NTFPs contribute as HHs primary, supplementary and emergency sources of income. NTFPs also constituted an estimated 19 percent of HHs net annual income, and were the primary occupation for about 18 percent of the HHs. HHs dependency on nearby forests for various NTFPs varied vis-a-vis their socio-economic condition as well as with their location from the park. Based on our case study the article also offers some clues for improving the situation in PA.Comment: To appear in Journal of Environmental Planning and Management, 201

Does digital transformation matter for operational risk exposure?

    Get PDF
Basel Committee recommends banks maintain a capital buffer for operational risk exposure based on business volumes, assuming aggressive actions for quicker business growth could increase risk exposures. We argue that technological innovations expose banks to more operational risk because technology helps increase business volume, but system failure, problems with internal processes, and disruptions from external and internal security threats are inherent to technology. Based on 10 years of data for 264 banks from 43 countries, we find that digitalized banking operation is an underlying driver of operational risk that comes with increased business volume. Banks proactively take more operational risks by increasing cyber spending to tackle FinTech competition in the digitalized economy. Digitalization could generally matter for operational risk exposure, but the natural experiment does not find cybersecurity threats per se could increase operational risks even though cybersecurity appears to be a serious threat to digital banking. The study creates new avenues for future research

Stereopsis is believed to be advantageous for surgical tasks that require precise hand-eye coordination. We investigated the effects of short-term and long-term absence of stereopsis on motor task performance in three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) viewing conditions

Background : Heart failure is a clinical syndrome caused by abnormalities of cardiac structure or function. The prevalence of heart failure is increasing and caused loss of quality of life. Heart failure treatment guidelines has been prepared to guide medical treatment and doctors in providing treatment recommendations. There are various classes of drugs used in the treatment of heart failure, one of which is ACE Inhibitor. Nowadays it has been discovered that ACE Inhihitor is the first choice medication for heart failureAim : To know wether the prescripction of ACE Inhibitor in heart failure hospitalized of dr. Kariadi Semarang Central Hospital is in conformity with the guidelines for the treatment of heart failure that used Internationall.Metods : This was a descriptive study. Research data were the medical records of hospitalized heart failure patients who received ACE Inhibitor therapy in dr. Kariadi Semarang Central Hospital in January 2013 to December 2013. Data were collected with a systematic random sampling method. In this study, the administration of ACE Inhibitor followed heart failure guidelines issued by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and American Heart Association (AHA) which is the heart failure patients with NYHA II – IV classificationResult : There were 122 patients who received ACE Inhibitor therapy, 121 patients (53,5%) received ACE Inhibitor therapy with proper indications. one patient (0,4%) received ACE Inhibitor therapy, without apropiate indications. Conclusion : There were 99,2% patients who received ACE Inhibitor therapy with apropriate indication and 0,8% patients with inappropriate indication

Cisplatin based therapy: The role of the mitogen activated protein kinase signaling pathway

    Get PDF
Cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent for treatment of various cancers. However, treatment with cisplatin is associated with drug resistance and several adverse side effects such as nephrotoxicity, reduced immunity towards infections and hearing loss. A Combination of cisplatin with other drugs is an approach to overcome drug resistance and reduce toxicity. The combination therapy also results in increased sensitivity of cisplatin towards cancer cells. The mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway in the cell, consisting of extracellular signal regulated kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, p38 kinases, and downstream mediator p90 ribosomal s6 kinase (RSK); is responsible for the regulation of various cellular events including cell survival, cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, cell migration and protein translation. This review article demonstrates the role of MAPK pathway in cisplatin based therapy, illustrates different combination therapy involving cisplatin and also shows the importance of targeting MAPK family, particularly RSK, to achieve increased anticancer effect and overcome drug resistance when combined with cisplatin. - 2018 The Author(s).Scopu
