    Performance of Tomato (Lysopersicon Esculentum) Germplasms Grown in Bangladesh for Salinity Tolerance Mplasm

    A solution culture experiment was conducted to screen out a number of Bangladeshi tomato germplasms for salinity tolerance by exposed to control, 8, 12 dS/m NaCl (salt stress). Salinity tolerance of tomato germplasms were evaluated with respect to salinity tolerance index, shoot and root dry matter production, shoot Na+, K+, Ca2+ accumulation and their respective ratios. A tolerance index was calculated for every single germplasm in root, stem and leaf dry weights and in the K/Na and Ca/Na parameters of these organs. Tomato germplasms responded differently to salt tolerance. Based on the salinity tolerance index caused by the NaCl treatment “BT14 (BARI Tomato 14)” and “BHT5 (BARI Hybrid Tomato 5)” were found to be most tolerant germplasms to salinity with highest salinity tolerance index, root-shoot dry matter production, accumulation of K and Ca and exclusion of Na. Thus, “BT14” and “BHT5” can be regarded as a breeding material for development of new tomato varieties for tolerance to salinity

    Effect of GABA Application on the Growth and Yield of Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia)

    An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of GABA (GA3 1% & SBA Brassicasteroids as STC 0.3%) application on growth, yield and yield contributing traits of bitter gourd. GABA was applied at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg L-1 as foliar spray at 30 days after sowing, while control plants received no GABA. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. Result showed that GABA had positive regulatory effect on morphological growth, yield and yield related traits of bitter gourd; nonetheless GABA application at 1.5 mg L-1 was found the most effective in improving length and diameter of main vine, individual branch length, number of branches, total branch length, number of nodes per plant, vine diameter, days to first male and female flowering, numbers of male and female flower, number of fruit, weight of individual fruit, length and diameter of fruit, percentage of fruit set and number of seeds per fruit. Hence GABA application at 1.5 mg L-1 as foliar spray could be the suitable concentration for enhancing growth and yield of bitter gourd

    Clinical presentations among adult patients with tuberculous meningitis

    Background: Bangladesh is a country with a high burden of pulmonary as well as extrapulmonary tuberculosis. TBM is a particularly important public health issue in our country. Identifying prognostic predictors would improve the quality of management and ultimately will prevent long-term mortality and morbidity. The aim of the study was to observe and identify the most common clinical presentations among patients with tuberculous meningitis. Methods: This hospital-based prospective cohort study was carried out at the in-patient Department of Clinical Neurology at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital (NINS and H), Dhaka, Bangladesh from October 2016 to September 2017, 1 year. A total of 54 patients admitted to the hospital with features of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) were selected for the study following inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Over 70% of patients were adolescents or young adults with a mean age of 28.2±12.3 years. The majority (48.2%) of the participants were from TBM stage II, while 37% were from stage III of TBM. Fever, headache, and systematic symptoms were the most frequent clinical presentations. The median delay in treatment was 30 days. Interruption in anti-TB treatment was reported in 3 (9.3%) cases. Conclusions: The study found that among possible TBM cases, the most frequent clinical features were fever, headache, and systematic symptoms. Focal neurological deficit and cerebral nerve palsy also had a high prevalence among the participants. The majority of the participants were young adults and female prevalence was high in the present study. The majority were from stage II TB among the study participants

    Creek`s Aquaculture Techniques in Rangamati Hill Tracts of Bangladesh

    An experiment was conducted in nine suitable (average .10±2 ha) creeks of Rangamati hill tracts Bangladesh viz., of Langadu, Naniarchar and Sadar Upazila for evaluating growth, survival and production performance of Indian major carps (Labeo rohita, Catla catla, Cirrhinus mrigala) in a completely randomized design into three different treatments with three replications for a period of one year. Stocking density, growth, survival was checked periodically and total yield calculated from stocking and harvesting data. A significant spatial variation in specific growth rate (SGR) and yields was found despite uniform stocking densities, attributable to variation in environmental parameters. Among the results rohu was found to have comparatively higher SGR of 1.51±0.55 in Naniarchar where as langadu creek was reported with higher SGR of 1.46±0.94, 1.57±0.41 and 1.46 ±.64 for rohu catla, and mrigal. Rangamati sadar Upazilla creek was found to be conducive to Catla with a SGR of 1.55±.78. In general, higher gross and net productions were reported from Sadar Upazilla, Langadu and Naniarchar creeks, suggestive of its suitability for developing creeks aquaculture technology. However research findings will help the community of Chittagong hill tracts by giving appropriate technology for sustainable fish production in creeks

    Combining Machine Learning Classifiers for Stock Trading with Effective Feature Extraction

    The unpredictability and volatility of the stock market render it challenging to make a substantial profit using any generalized scheme. This paper intends to discuss our machine learning model, which can make a significant amount of profit in the US stock market by performing live trading in the Quantopian platform while using resources free of cost. Our top approach was to use ensemble learning with four classifiers: Gaussian Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, Logistic Regression with L1 regularization and Stochastic Gradient Descent, to decide whether to go long or short on a particular stock. Our best model performed daily trade between July 2011 and January 2019, generating 54.35% profit. Finally, our work showcased that mixtures of weighted classifiers perform better than any individual predictor about making trading decisions in the stock market

    Food aid programme during restricted hilsa fishing period: effectiveness and management perspective

    Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) is geographically and economically important species in Bangladesh. To conserve hilsa, the government of Bangladesh has introduced fishing ban for certain periods of the year and also provides food assistance to hilsa fishers during the restriction period. Inadequate management often pushes real fishers out of the assistance programme and therefore, this study focused on assessing the effectiveness of the programme with a view to proposing a better management practice. A total of 202 randomly selected fishermen, living in the villages adjacent to Andharmanik River of Patuakhali district of Bangladesh, were interviewed. The Andharmanik River is famous for the natural breeding of hilsa. Results suggest that the amount of food provided and its distribution pattern were not that effective for the fishermen. Effectiveness was significantly related to the number of earning able family member, income difference between peak and restricted season and loan facility during the restriction period. This study also explained income difference trajectories of the fishermen community. Community-based management with facilitation by the state fisheries department and local government entity may enhance the programme effectiveness. More awareness programme and research are needed in this regard

    This chapter addresses how corporate governance supports shareholder-director conflicts and company success. Islamic financial institution (IFI) governance and performance have not been studied, yet corporate governance has affected previous financial crises. This examines IFI board size, ownership, CEO duality, and pay committee independent directors. Also studied is how Islamic corporate governance influences executive director pay. Thus, IFIs require an IWBCGF to handle current and future corporate governance issues. Qualitative corporate governance metrics research and qualitative Islamic principle evaluation helped exploratory studies attain these goals. The research shows that corporate governance strongly impacts IFI executive pay. These results show that executive directors require an Islamic-based comprehensive governance framework to navigate corporate governance issues. The study makes literary contributions. It tackles the lack of religious research on Islam and IFI corporate governance. It highlights IFIs’ corporate governance and CEO remuneration
