Piezoelectric Devices in the Sustainable Society

    Get PDF
Our 21st century faces to a “sustainable society”, which enhances (a) usage of non-toxic materials, (b) disposal technology for existing hazardous materials, (c) reduction of contamination gas, (d) environmental monitoring system, (e) new energy source creation, and (f) energy-efficient device development in the piezoelectric area. With reducing their size, the electromagnetic components reduce their efficiency drastically. Thus, piezoelectric transducers with much less losses are highly sought recently. Piezoelectric devices seem to be all-around contributors and a key component to the above mentioned five R&D areas. Some of the efforts include: (a) Since the most popular piezoelectric lead zirconate titante ceramics will be regulated in European and Asian societies due to their toxicity (Pb2+ ion), lead-free piezoelectrics have been developed. (b) Since hazardous organic substances can easily be dissolved by the ultrasonic irradiation in water, a new safe disposal technology using piezoelectric transducers has been developed. (c) We demonstrated an energy recovery system on a hybrid car from its engine’s mechanical vibration to the rechargeable battery. (d) Micro ultrasonic motors based on piezoelectrics demonstrated 1/20 reduction in the volume and a 20-time increase in efficiency of the conventional electromagnetic motors. This paper introduces leading piezoelectric materials, devices, and drive/control methods, relating with the above “sustainability” technologies, aiming at further research expansion in this area

Utility of gastric biopsy in diagnosing IgG4‐related gastrointestinal disease

The utility of gastric biopsy for diagnosing immunoglobulin (Ig)G4‐related gastrointestinal disease (IgG4‐GID) remains unclear. Bottom‐heavy plasmacytosis (BHP) is a distinct feature of IgG4‐GID. To clarify the feasibility of using gastric biopsies to diagnose BHP in IgG4‐GID, we analyzed the histological features and immunostaining of gastric biopsy specimens from 31 known IgG4‐related disease (IgG4‐RD) patients and we assessed the presence of BHP in 1696 consecutive routine gastric biopsies. Cases with both >10 IgG4‐positive plasma cells per high‐power field and an IgG4/IgG‐positive ratio >40% were defined as IgG4‐high. Ten of the 31 IgG4‐RD patients were concluded to have IgG4‐GID, in which IgG4‐positive plasma cells were notably detected at the deeper part of the mucosa. Six cases displayed BHP whereas the remaining four cases showed transmural infiltration with concomitant Helicobacter pylori‐associated gastritis. In addition to BHP, we identified two unique histologic features for IgG4‐GID: plasmacytic aggregation in the muscularis mucosae and permeative plasmacytic infiltration between fundic glands in the non‐atrophic mucosa. Six of the routine cases (0.35%) displayed BHP, including a case with IgG4‐RD. IgG4‐GID can be suspected by the presence of gastric biopsy specimens with characteristic histological features. Such cases are recommended to undergo further examinations to determine whether IgG4‐RD is present

Evidence for the suppression of intermediate anti-ferroelectric ordering and observation of hardening mechanism in Na1/2Bi 1/2TiO3 ceramics through cobalt substitution

Co-ion (5 mol %) substitution in Na1/2Bi1/2TiO 3 (NBT) host lattice and their effects on the structural, ferroelectric and dielectric behavior has been investigated thoroughly in this present study. The substituted Co-ion at Ti-site acts an acceptor type doping and hardens (i.e., increase in coercivity) the system without any noticeable change in the remanent polarization values. However, the intermediate antiferroelectric (AFE) ordering which exists between 200 C-280 C in NBT system has been suppressed due to Co-ion substitution, which is an interesting feature for device applications

Germline mutation of HRPT2 in patients with HPT

Background A subset of familial isolated primary hyperparathyroidism (FIHP) is a variant of hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome (HPT-JT). Aim/Patients and Methods We investigated the involvement of the HRPT2, MEN1, and CASR genes in provisional 11 FIHP families and 2 HPT-JT families. Results Germline mutations of HRPT2 were found in 2 of 11 FIHP families and 1 of 2 HPT-JT families. One FIHP family with parathyroid carcinoma and atypical adenomas, and another FIHP family with cystic parathyroid adenoma had novel frameshift mutations of 518-521del and 62-66del, respectively. In a patient with HPT-JT, a de novo germline mutation of 39delC was detected. Novel somatic HRPT2 mutations of 70-73del and 95-102del were found in 2 of 5 parathyroid tumors in a family with 518-521del mutation. Biallelic inactivation of HRPT2 by a combination of germline mutation and somatic mutation was confirmed in parathyroid tumors. The finding that 2 families diagnosed with FIHP carried HRPT2 mutations suggests that they have occult HPT-JT. In the remaining 10 families, one family had a missense MEN1 mutation. No mutations of CASR were detected. Conclusion Our results confirm the need to test for HRPT2 in FIHP families, especially in those with parathyroid carcinomas, atypical adenomas, or adenomas with cystic change

The purpose of this research is to examine body functions in a regional weak living and the nursing necessary senior citizen and the relations to the nursing necessary level. [Subject]:A regional weak living and needed nursing 167 senior citizens were targeted. [Method]:The object person was analyzed, and the crowd division was done according to the nursing level, and the relation between body functions and the nursing level was analyzed. [Result]: The nursing level decreases the capacity of balance, the lower limbs muscular power, the whole body endurance, and the ambulatory ability and the ability has decreased with advancing. However, the relation to the nursing level was not admitted as for the arm muscular power and flexibility. [Conclusion]: It was suggested that it was necessary to make the best use of this result for the programs aimed at preventing elderly people requiring nursing care from further losing physical and mental strength
