    Space-Time Symmetries of Quantized Tensionless Strings

    The tensionless limit of the free bosonic string is space-time conformally symmetric classically. Requiring invariance of the quantum theory in the light cone gauge tests the reparametrization symmetry needed to fix this gauge. The full conformal symmetry gives stronger constraints than the Poincar\'e subalgebra. We find that the symmetry may be preserved in any space-time dimension, but only if the spectrum is drastically reduced (part of this reduction is natural in a zero tension limit of the ordinary string spectrum). The quantum states are required to be symmetric ({\it i.e.} singlets) under space-time diffeomorphisms, except for the centre of mass wave function.Comment: 15pp, plain latex, USITP-92-

    A multi-epoch spectrophotometric atlas of symbiotic stars

    A multi-epoch, absolute-fluxed spectral atlas extending from about 3200 to 9000 Ang is presented for 130 symbiotic stars, including members of the LMC, SMC and Draco dwarf galaxies. The fluxes are accurate to better than 5% as shown by comparison with Tycho and ground-based photometric data. The spectra of 40 reference objects (MKK cool giant standards, Mira and Carbon stars, planetary nebulae, white dwarfs, hot sub-dwarfs, Wolf-Rayet stars, classical novae, VV Cep and Herbig Ae/Be objects) are provided to assist the interpretation of symbiotic star spectra. Astrometric positions and counterparts in astrometric catalogues are derived for all program symbiotic stars.Comment: A&A, in press (264 pages, 3 tables, 256 figures).     Type IIB tensionless superstrings in a pp-wave background

    We solve the tensionless string in a constant plane wave background and obtain a hugely degenerate spectrum. This is the case for a large class of plane wave backgrounds. We show that the solution can also be derived as a consistent limit of the quantized tensile theory of IIB strings in a pp-wave.     Representations of the discrete inhomogeneous Lorentz group and Dirac wave equation on the lattice

    We propose the fundamental and two dimensional representation of the Lorentz groups on a (3+1)-dimensional hypercubic lattice, from which representations of higher dimensions can be constructed. For the unitary representation of the discrete translation group we use the kernel of the Fourier transform. From the Dirac representation of the Lorentz group (including reflections) we derive in a natural way the wave equation on the lattice for spin 1/2 particles.     Hole distribution for (Sr,Ca,Y,La)_14 Cu_24 O_41 ladder compounds studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

    The unoccupied electronic structure for the Sr_14Cu_24O_41 family of two-leg ladder compounds was investigated for different partial substitutions of Sr^2+ by Ca^2+, leaving the nominal hole count constant, and by Y^3+ or La^3+, reducing the nominal hole count from its full value of 6 per formula unit. Using polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy on single crystals, hole states on both the chain and ladder sites could be studied. While for intermediate hole counts all holes reside on O sites of the chains, a partial hole occupation on the ladder sites in orbitals oriented along the legs is observed for the fully doped compound Sr_14Cu_24O_41. On substitution of Ca for Sr orbitals within the ladder planes but perpendicular to the legs receive some hole occupation as well.Comment: 10 pages RevTeX style with 7 embedded figures + 1 table; accepted by Phys.     Synthetic Spectral Analysis of the Hot Component in the S-Type Symbiotic Variable EG Andromeda

    We have applied grids of NLTE high gravity model atmospheres and optically thick accretion disk models for the first time to archival IUE and FUSE spectra of the S-type symbiotic variable EG And taken at superior spectroscopic conjunction when Rayleigh scattering should be minimal and the hot component is viewed in front of the red giant. For EG And's widely accepted, published hot component mass, orbital inclination and distance from the Hipparcos parallax, we find that hot, high gravity, NLTE photosphere model fits to the IUE spectra yield distances from the best-fitting models which agree with the Hipparcos parallax distance but at temperatures substantially lower than the modified Zanstra temperatures. NLTE fits to an archival FUSE spectrum taken at the same orbital phase as the IUE spectra yield the same temperature as the IUE temperature (50,000K). However, for the same hot component mass, inclination and parallax-derived distance, accretion disk models at moderately high inclinations, 6075\sim 60-75^{\circ} with accretion rates M˙=1×108\dot{M} = 1\times 10^{-8} to 1\times 10^{-9} M_{\sun}/yr for white dwarf masses M_{wd} = 0.4 M_{\sun} yield distances grossly smaller than the distance from the Hipparcos parallax. Therefore, we rule out an accretion disk as the dominant source of the FUV flux. Our findings support a hot bare white dwarf as the dominant source of FUV flux.Comment: AJ, Oct. 200

    Pentacyclic triterpenes from Terminalia arjuna show multiple benefits on aged and dry skin

    BACKGROUND Pentacyclic triterpenoids improve epidermal barrier function and induce collagen production. Here, their effects on cutaneous aging by means of objective instrumental measurements were elucidated. METHODS Reconstituted human epidermis, cultivated keratinocytes and fibroblasts were incubated with Terminalia arjuna triterpenes (T. arjuna bark extract), and mRNA and protein expression of various genes was determined using microarray analysis, qRT-PCR and ELISA techniques. Clinical efficacy of T. arjuna bark extract versus vehicle control cream was elucidated in 30 patients and transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration and elasticity were measured. Another 30 female patients in their postmenopausal phase were treated with a similar regime, and skin sebum content, cutaneous blood microcirculation and skin density/echogenicity were assessed. RESULTS Incubation with T. arjuna triterpenes increased FGF-2, TSP-1, TGF-\textgreekb and CTGF expression, and VEGF secretion in vitro. Elevated lactate dehydrogenase release upon sodium dodecyl sulphate challenge was reversed by the application of T. arjuna bark extract. T. arjuna bark extract decreased TEWL, improved skin moisturization, reduced scaliness and led to significantly improved skin elasticity. Also, increases in blood microflow and skin sebum content as well as improved skin thickness/echogenicity were noted on postmenopausal skin, resulting in visible reduction of sagging skin on the jowls as demonstrated by digital photography. CONCLUSION T. arjuna bark extract appears as an innovative active ingredient that exerts versatile antiaging properties in vitro and in vivo

    Hamiltonian of Tensionless Strings with Tensor Central Charge Coordinates

    A new class of twistor-like string models in four-dimensional space-time extended by the addition of six tensorial central charge (TCC) coordinates zmnz_{mn} is studied. The Hamiltonian of tensionless string in the extended space-time is derived and its symmetries are investigated. We establish that the string constraints reduce the number of independent TCC coordinates zmnz_{mn} to one real effective coordinate which composes an effective 5-dimensional target space together with the xmx^{m} coordinates. We construct the P.B. algebra of the first class constraints and discover that it coincides with the P.B. algebra of tensionless strings. The Lorentz covariant antisymmetric Dirac C^\hat{\mathbf C}-matrix of the P.B. of the second class constraints is constructed and its algebraic structure is further presented.Comment: 18 pages, Latex, no figure
