    Non-Riemannian gravity actions from double field theory

    Non-Riemannian gravitational theories suggest alternative avenues to understand properties of quantum gravity and provide a concrete setting to study condensed matter systems with non-relativistic symmetry. Derivation of an action principle for these theories generally proved challenging for various reasons. In this technical note, we employ the formulation of double field theory to construct actions for a variety of such theories. This formulation helps removing ambiguities in the corresponding equations of motion. In particular, we embed Torsional Newton-Cartan gravity, Carrollian gravity and String Newton-Cartan gravity in double field theory, derive their actions and compare with the previously obtained results in literature

    Infertility is described as an inability to conceive despite unprotective sex for duration of one year or more. Male, female or both can be a victim for this disorder. There may be many biological causes of infertility including some can be treated with medical or surgical intervention. Ayurveda consider this problem as a cause of deterioration of quality of four factors i.e., time of ovulation, female health in context of reproductive system, quality of sperm and ovum and female’s proper nutrition. There are different treatment methods and medicines used according to the deficit in male, female or in both. Vajikaran drugs like Ashwagandha, Madhuyasthi, Vidarikanda, Gokshura etc., are used in male fertility problems and Satavari, Punarnava, Dasmoola, Aloevera etc., used in female infertility problems. The purificatory procedures like Vamana, Virechana, Basti etc., are also found very effective to improve the quality and strength of required reproductive factors in both sexes. The effect of Uttar basti is also evidenced in different researches to treat female infertility

    Shell model for buoyancy-driven turbulence

    In this paper we present a unified shell model for stably stratified and convective turbulence. Numerical simulation of this model for stably stratified flow shows Bolgiano-Obukhbov scaling in which the kinetic energy spectrum varies as k11/5k^{-11/5}. We also observe a dual scaling (k11/5k^{-11/5} and k5/3k^{-5/3}) for a limited range of parameters. The shell model of convective turbulence yields Kolmogorov's spectrum. These results are consistent with the energy flux and energy feed due to buoyancy, and are in good agreement with direct numerical simulations of Kumar {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 90}, 023016 (2014)]

    Effect of crop geometries and fertility levels on growth, yield and residual nutrients of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) hybrids under rainfed condition*

    A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2008-09 to study the effect of crop geometries and fertility levels on growth, yield and residual nutrients of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) hybrids under rainfed condition. Cotton hybrids MLCH 318 was planted under wider crop geometry of 90 cm × 60 cm which recorded significantly higher growth parameters, monopodial branches and seed cotton weight/plant. However, yield potential of MLCH 318 were higher under closer crop geometry (60 cm × 60 cm) and recorded significantly taller plant, yield attributes and yield of cotton over wider crop geometry of 90 cm × 60 cm (S1) due to more number of plants stand at initial and harvest stages, respectively. Although, cultivar VBCH 2231 (V2) with crop geometry of 90 cm × 60 cm (S1) recorded more in residual status of N (200.44 and 204 kg/ha), P (16.82 and 16.67 kg/ha) and K (496.50 and 489.04 kg/ha), respectively. Among fertility levels, growth characters, yield attributes and yield of cotton with residual N (204.11), P (17.24) and K (495.26 kg/ha) were significantly higher under highest levels of fertility, i.e. 62.5: 31.25: 31.25 kg N: P: K/ha. Thus, it concluded that sowing of cultivar MLCH 318 at crop geometry of 60 cm × 60 cm and fertilized with. 62.5: 31.25: 31.25 kg N: P: K/ha produced significantly higher yield attributes and yield under rainfed condition

    Culture and regeneration of mesophyll-derived protoplasts of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]

    A protocol for plant regeneration from mesophyll/protoplasts of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] was developed. The yield of intact protoplasts, their subsequent divisions and regeneration were genotype-dependent. The genotype 296B was always more responsive than IS 32266. For 296B, the sixth leaf from 18-day-old plants kept in dark for 2 days before harvesting was found to be the most suitable source of viable protoplasts. The first division was observed 10–12 days after plating, and the second division after 12–14 days. The maximum plating efficiency was 4.8% in 296 B, followed by 2.48% in IS 32266. Microcolonies were visible after 25–30 days, and microcalli after 60–75 days. Whole plants were obtained after 6–8 weeks of culture of microcalli on MS medium containing 0.2 mg l–1 kinetin and 2 mg l–1 BAP. The frequency of regeneration in 296B and IS 32266 was 12.80% and 10.58%, respectively. Ten plants transferred to pots in the glasshouse established well. The seeds collected from glasshouse-grown plants were sown in the field where plants were grown to maturity

    Modification of conservative treatment of heterotopic cervical pregnancy by Foley catheter balloon fixation with cerclage sutures at the level of the external cervical os: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Conservative treatment of a heterotopic cervical pregnancy was performed with a modification of the fixation of a Foley catheter at the level of the external cervical os, followed by the ligature of the descending cervical branches of the uterine arteries and systemic methotrexate application.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 34-year-old Caucasian woman was diagnosed with double gestation after 6 weeks of <it>in vitro </it>fertilization treatment. A gynecological examination and color Doppler ultrasound scan revealed intra-uterine and cervical gestational sacs both containing live fetuses. A Foley catheter balloon was inserted into the cervical canal, inflated and fixed by a cerclage suture at the level of the external cervical os, followed by ligation of the descending cervical branches of the uterine arteries. Systemic methotrexate was applied. Three days after removal of the Foley catheter, an evacuation of the intra-uterine gestational sac was performed. Hemorrhage from the implantation site was controlled immediately and a pregnancy termination was successfully performed. The procedure was uneventful and our patient was discharged with a preserved uterus.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Conservative treatment of cervical pregnancy using a Foley catheter balloon is more efficacious if the Foley catheter balloon is attached in the correct position with a cerclage suture at the level of the external os, followed by ligation of the descending cervical branches of the uterine arteries, thereby exerting maximal pressure on the bleeding vessels.</p

    Machine Learning Outperforms Regression Analysis to Predict Next-Season Major League Baseball Player Injuries: Epidemiology and Validation of 13,982 Player-Years From Performance and Injury Profile Trends, 2000-2017

    Background: Machine learning (ML) allows for the development of a predictive algorithm capable of imbibing historical data on a Major League Baseball (MLB) player to accurately project the player\u27s future availability. Purpose: To determine the validity of an ML model in predicting the next-season injury risk and anatomic injury location for both position players and pitchers in the MLB. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: Using 4 online baseball databases, we compiled MLB player data, including age, performance metrics, and injury history. A total of 84 ML algorithms were developed. The output of each algorithm reported whether the player would sustain an injury the following season as well as the injury\u27s anatomic site. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) primarily determined validation. Results: Player data were generated from 1931 position players and 1245 pitchers, with a mean follow-up of 4.40 years (13,982 player-years) between the years of 2000 and 2017. Injured players spent a total of 108,656 days on the disabled list, with a mean of 34.21 total days per player. The mean AUC for predicting next-season injuries was 0.76 among position players and 0.65 among pitchers using the top 3 ensemble classification. Back injuries had the highest AUC among both position players and pitchers, at 0.73. Advanced ML models outperformed logistic regression in 13 of 14 cases. Conclusion: Advanced ML models generally outperformed logistic regression and demonstrated fair capability in predicting publicly reportable next-season injuries, including the anatomic region for position players, although not for pitchers
