    Inter-specific hybridization underlies phenotypic variability in Daphnia populations

    In the glacial lakes of the Palaearctic three species of Cladocera commonly coexist: Daphnia hyalina, D. galeata , and D. cucullata . Frequently these populations contain not only animals which are morphologically typical for the species but also individuals of an intermediate phenotype. Electrophoretic investigations of allozyme-patterns in morphologically typical individuals reveal that each species is fixed for a different allele at the GOT locus. Morphologically intermediate animals are heterozygous for the alleles of the two species which they resemble. The allelic pattern at other loci is also consistent with the assumption that morphological intermediates are formed via interspecific hybridization. Very few backcrosses between galeata-hyalina hybrids and their parent species are found, and there is no indication of gene flow between D. cucullata and the other species.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47761/1/442_2004_Article_BF00378763.pd

    Reasoning with heuristics

    Which rules should guide our reasoning? Human reasoners often use reasoning shortcuts, called heuristics, which function well in some contexts but lack the universality of reasoning rules like deductive implication or inference to the best explanation. Does it follow that human reasoning is hopelessly irrational? I argue: no. Heuristic reasoning often represents human reasoners reaching a local rational maximum, reasoning more accurately than if they try to implement more “ideal” rules of reasoning. I argue this is a genuine rational achievement. Our ideal rational advisors would advise us to reason with heuristic rules, not more complicated ideal rules. I argue we do not need a radical new account of epistemic norms to make sense of the success of heuristic reasoning

    Coexisting Cyclic Parthenogens Comprise a Holocene Species Flock in Eubosmina

    Background: Mixed breeding systems with extended clonal phases and weak sexual recruitment are widespread in nature but often thought to impede the formation of discrete evolutionary clusters. Thus, cyclic parthenogens, such as cladocerans and rotifers, could be predisposed to ‘‘species problems’ ’ and a lack of discrete species. However, species flocks have been proposed for one cladoceran group, Eubosmina, where putative species are sympatric, and there is a detailed paleolimnological record indicating a Holocene age. These factors make the Eubosmina system suitable for testing the hypotheses that extended clonal phases and weak sexual recruitment inhibit speciation. Although common garden experiments have revealed a genetic component to the morphotypic variation, the evolutionary significance of the morphotypes remains controversial. Methodology/Principal Findings: In the present study, we tested the hypothesis of a single polymorphic species (i.e., mixing occurs but selection maintains genes for morphology) in four northern European lakes where the morphotypes coexist. Our evidence is based on nuclear DNA sequence, mitochondrial DNA sequence, and morphometric analysis of coexisting morphotypes. We found significant genetic differentiation, genealogical exclusivity, and morphometric differentiation for coexisting morphotypes.     Predictive regularity representations in deviance detection and auditory stream segregation: from conceptual to computational models

    Predictive accounts of perception have received increasing attention in the past twenty years. Detecting violations of auditory regularities, as reflected by the Mismatch Negativity (MMN) auditory event-related potential, is amongst the phenomena seamlessly fitting this approach. Largely based on the MMN literature, we propose a psychological conceptual framework called the Auditory Event Representation System (AERS), which is based on the assumption that auditory regularity violation detection and the formation of auditory perceptual objects are based on the same predictive regularity representations. Based on this notion, a computational model of auditory stream segregation, called CHAINS, has been developed. In CHAINS, the auditory sensory event representation of each incoming sound is considered for being the continuation of likely combinations of the preceding sounds in the sequence, thus providing alternative interpretations of the auditory input. Detecting repeating patterns allows predicting upcoming sound events, thus providing a test and potential support for the corresponding interpretation. Alternative interpretations continuously compete for perceptual dominance. In this paper, we briefly describe AERS and deduce some general constraints from this conceptual model. We then go on to illustrate how these constraints are computationally specified in CHAINS
