    Wärmeübertragung in dreidimensionalen, magnetohydrodynamischen Strömungen

    Get PDF

Hemispheric asymmetry in visuospatial attention assessed with transcranial magnetic stimulation

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to study visuospatial attention processing in ten healthy volunteers. In a forced choice recognition task the subjects were confronted with two symbols simultaneously presented during 120ms at random positions, one in the left and the other in the right visual field. The subject had to identify the presented pattern out of four possible combinations and to press the corresponding response key within 2 s. Double-pulse TMS (dTMS) with a 100-ms interstimulus interval (ISI) and an intensity of 80% of the stimulator output (corresponding to 110-120% of the motor threshold) was applied by a nonfocal coil over the right or left posterior parietal cortex (PPC, corresponding to P3/P4 of the international 10-20 system) at different time intervals after onset of the visual stimulus (starting at 120ms, 270ms and 520ms). Double-pulse TMS over the right PPC starting at 270ms led to a significant increase in percentage of errors in the contralateral, left visual field (median: 23% with TMS vs 13% without TMS, P=0.0025). TMS applied earlier or later showed no effect. Furthermore, no significant increase in contra- or ipsilateral percentage of errors was found when the left parietal cortex was stimulated with the same timing. These data indicate that: (1) parietal influence on visuospatial attention is mainly controlled by the right lobe since the same stimulation over the left parietal cortex had no significant effect, and (2) there is a vulnerable time window to disturb this cortical process, since dTMS had a significant effect on the percentage of errors in the contralateral visual hemifield only when applied 270ms after visual stimulus presentatio

    SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 - a Two Dimensional Spin Liquid

We study an extended Shastry-Sutherland model for SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 and analyze the low lying parts of the energy spectrum by means of a perturbative unitary transformation based on flow equations. The derivation of the 1-magnon dispersion (elementary triplets) is discussed. Additionally, we give a quantitative description (symmetries and energies) of bound states made from two elementary triplets. Our high order results allow to fix the model parameters for SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 precisely: J_1=6.16(10)meV, x:=J_2/J_1=0.603(3), J_\perp=1.3(2)meV. To our knowledge this is the first quantitative treatment of bound states in a true 2d model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Proceeding paper of the HFM2000 conference in Waterloo, Canada, Jun 200

Magnetic properties of (VO)_2P_2O_7: two-plane structure and spin-phonon interactions

Detailed experiments on single-crystal (VO)_2P_2O_7 continue to reveal new and unexpected features. We show that a model composed of two, independent planes of spin chains with frustrated magnetic coupling is consistent with nuclear magnetic resonance and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The pivotal role of PO_4 groups in mediating intrachain exchange interactions explains both the presence of two chain types and their extreme sensitivity to certain lattice vibrations, which results in the strong magnetoelastic coupling observed by light scattering. We compute the respective modifications of the spin and phonon dynamics due to this coupling, and illustrate their observable consequences on the phonon frequencies, magnon dispersions, static susceptibility and specific heat.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

Quark masses in Higgs production with a jet veto

We study the impact of finite mass effects due to top and bottom loops in the jet-veto distribution for Higgs production. We discuss the appearance of non-factorizing logarithms in the region p t,veto ≳ m b . We study their numerical impact and argue that these terms can be treated as a finite remainder. We therefore detail our prescription for resumming the jet-vetoed cross section and for assessing its uncertainty in the presence of finite mass effects. Resummation for the jet-veto, including mass effects, has been implemented in the public code JetVHeto

    The PANDA GEM-based TPC Prototype

We report on the development of a GEM-based TPC prototype for the PANDA experiment. The design and requirements of this device will be illustrated, with particular emphasis on the properties of the recently tested GEM-detector, the characterization of the read-out electronics and the development of the tracking software that allows to evaluate the GEM-TPC data.Comment: submitted to NIMA 4 pages, 6 picture
