    Wake Vortex Attenuation Flight Tests: A Status Report

    Flight tests were conducted to evaluate the magnitude of aerodynamic attenuation of the wake vortices of large transport aircraft that can be achieved through the use of static spoiler deflection and lateral control oscillation. These methods of attenuation were tested on Boeing B-747 and Lockheed L-1011 commercial transport aircraft. Evaluations were made using probe aircraft, photographic and visual observations, and ground based measurements of the vortex velocity profiles. The magnitude of attenuation resulting from static spoiler deflection was evaluated both in and out of ground effect. A remotely piloted QF-86 drone aircraft was used to probe the attenuated vortices in flight in and out of ground effect, and to make landings behind an attenuated B-747 airplane at reduced separation distances

    Solitons induced by an in-plane magnetic field in rhombohedral multilayer graphene

    We model the influence of an in-plane magnetic field on the orbital motion of electrons in rhombohedral graphene multilayers. For zero field, the low-energy band structure includes a pair of flat bands near zero energy which are localized on the surface layers of a finite thin film. For finite field, we find that the zero-energy bands persist and that level bifurcations occur at energies determined by the component of the in-plane wave vector qq that is parallel to the external field. The occurrence of level bifurcations is explained by invoking semiclassical quantization of the zero field Fermi surface of rhombohedral graphite. We find parameter regions with a single isoenergetic contour of Berry phase zero corresponding to a conventional Landau level spectrum and regions with two isoenergetic contours, each of Berry phase π\pi, corresponding to a Dirac-like spectrum of levels. We write down an analogous one-dimensional tight-binding model and relate the persistence of the zero-energy bands in large magnetic fields to a soliton texture supporting zero-energy states in the Su-Schreiffer-Heeger model. We show that different states contributing to the zero-energy flat bands in rhombohedral graphene multilayers in a large field, as determined by the wave vector qq, are localized on different bulk layers of the system, not just the surfaces.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

    Vortex attenuation flight experiments

    Flight tests evaluating the effects of altered span loading, turbulence ingestion, combinations of mass and turbulence ingestion, and combinations of altered span loading turbulance ingestion on trailed wake vortex attenuation were conducted. Span loadings were altered in flight by varying the deflections of the inboard and outboard flaps on a B-747 aircraft. Turbulence ingestion was achieved in flight by mounting splines on a C-54G aircraft. Mass and turbulence ingestion was achieved in flight by varying the thrust on the B-747 aircraft. Combinations of altered span loading and turbulence ingestion were achieved in flight by installing a spoiler on a CV-990 aircraft and by deflecting the existing spoilers on a B-747 aircraft. The characteristics of the attenuated and unattenuated vortexes were determined by probing them with smaller aircraft. Acceptable separation distances for encounters with the attenuated and unattenuated vortexes are presented

    Complete Genome Sequencing of Lactobacillus plantarum UNQLp 11 Isolated from a Patagonian Pinot Noir Wine

    Lactobacillus plantarum UNQLp 11 strain was isolated from a Patagonian Pinot noir wine at the oldest commercial winery (110 years old) in General Roca, North Patagonia, Argentina, and has demonstrated its ability to survive during winemaking processes and successfully carry out malolactic fermentation. This work aimed to obtain the whole assembled genome of the UNQLp 11 strain, analysing its architecture and the possible functions of the predicted genes from the oenological properties of this strain. The genome size is 3 534 932 bp, with a mean GC content of 44.2%, 3 412 CDS, 80 transposons and 148 tandem repeats. A comparison between the genome size and gene content of 14 Lb. plantarum strains from different origins was performed, and UNQLp 11 exhibited the largest size. The in silico genome-wide analysis allowed us to confirm the existence of genes encoding enzymes involved in the synthesis of several metabolites ofoenological interest, in addition to bacteriocins and exopolysaccharides. Furthermore, it is possible to speculate on this strain’s adaptation to different environments, as it is able to use diverse substrates forits growth. All these features suggest the potential of UNQLp 11 to be a good starter culture for malolactic fermentation

    Current Applications and Future Trends of Dehydrated Lactic Acid Bacteria for Incorporation in Animal Feed Products

    Several lactic acid bacteria (LAB) species have been recognized as probiotics and are of considerable interest due to their potential ability to confer health benefits upon consumption. In the animal feed sector, probiotics offer an alternative to the use of antibiotic growth promoters. The preservation and incorporation of probiotics into dry products requires carefully meeting several criteria and overcoming technological challenges to maintain their functionality. Drying is a crucial step in the process, but the probiotic properties of the resulting powder and the final cell viability in the food product are significantly influenced by the type of protective compounds and drying techniques employed. In light of the growing demand for functional animal products, this review focuses on the damages incurred during microorganism dehydration processes for food incorporation, and explores strategies to minimize such damages. It provides an overview of the effects of probiotic products in the animal feed industry, including their incorporation in low-moisture food matrices and key considerations for success.     Effect of galacto-oligosaccharides: maltodextrin matrices on the recovery of Lactobacillus plantarum after spray-drying

    In this work maltodextrins were added to commercial galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) in a 1:1 ratio and their thermophysical characteristics were analyzed. GOS:MD solutions were then used as matrices during spray-drying of Lactobacillus plantarum CIDCA 83114. The obtained powders were equilibrated at different relative humidities (RH) and stored at 5 and 20°C for 12 weeks, or at 30°C for 6 weeks. The Tgs of GOS:MD matrices were about 20-30°C higher than those of GOS at RH within 11 and 52%. A linear relation between the spin-spin relaxation time (T2) and T-Tg parameter was observed for GOS:MD matrices equilibrated at 11, 22, 33, and 44% RH at 5, 20, and 30°C. Spray-drying of L. plantarum CIDCA 83114 in GOS:MD matrices allowed the recovery of 93% microorganisms. In contrast, only 64% microorganisms were recovered when no GOS were included in the dehydration medium. Survival of L. plantarum CIDCA 83114 during storage showed the best performance for bacteria stored at 5°C. In a further step, the slopes of the linear regressions provided information about the rate of microbial inactivation for each storage condition (k values). This information can be useful to calculate the shelf-life of spray-dried starters stored at different temperatures and RH. Using GOS:MD matrices as a dehydration medium enhanced the recovery of L. plantarum CIDCA 83114 after spray-drying.
