    Composition in Theme and Variations Form

    We decided to study theme and variations composition because we found that it is very relevant and applicable to what we are learning in our Music Theory class. Variations form is also accessible to listeners and beginning composers. We hope that after our presentation, those listening will feel more comfortable in listening to and creating their own piece Theme and Variations form is a standard form of musical composition where a simple, unembellished melody is used as a theme and then repeated several times with melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, or other variations. We will take a theme and variations piece, Mozart\u27s Ah! vous dirai je maman Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star KV 265, and analyze what the theme is, and how the composer used variations of that theme in the piece. We will demonstrate the variation form with an audio timeliner diagram and audio clip. After demonstrating the form, we will show how to compose a piece in variation form, using our own original composition

    Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers' Brief

    In December 2013, the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) filed a petition for a common law writ of habeas corpus in the New York State Supreme Court on behalf of Tommy, a chimpanzee living alone in a cage in a shed in rural New York (Barlow, 2017). Under animal welfare laws, Tommy’s owners, the Laverys, were doing nothing illegal by keeping him in those conditions. Nonetheless, the NhRP argued that given the cognitive, social, and emotional capacities of chimpanzees, Tommy’s confinement constituted a profound wrong that demanded remedy by the courts. Soon thereafter, the NhRP filed habeas corpus petitions on behalf of Kiko, another chimpanzee housed alone in Niagara Falls, and Hercules and Leo, two chimpanzees held in research facilities at Stony Brook University. Thus began the legal struggle to move these chimpanzees from captivity to a sanctuary, an effort that has led the NhRP to argue in multiple courts before multiple judges. The central point of contention has been whether Tommy, Kiko, Hercules, and Leo have legal rights. To date, no judge has been willing to issue a writ of habeas corpus on their behalf. Such a ruling would mean that these chimpanzees have rights that confinement might violate. Instead, the judges have argued that chimpanzees cannot be bearers of legal rights because they are not, and cannot be persons.     Inhibition of Cellular Protein Secretion by Norwalk Virus Nonstructural Protein p22 Requires a Mimic of an Endoplasmic Reticulum Export Signal

    Protein trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus is central to cellular homeostasis. ER export signals are utilized by a subset of proteins to rapidly exit the ER by direct uptake into COPII vesicles for transport to the Golgi. Norwalk virus nonstructural protein p22 contains a YXΦESDG motif that mimics a di-acidic ER export signal in both sequence and function. However, unlike normal ER export signals, the ER export signal mimic of p22 is necessary for apparent inhibition of normal COPII vesicle trafficking, which leads to Golgi disassembly and antagonism of Golgi-dependent cellular protein secretion. This is the first reported function for p22. Disassembly of the Golgi apparatus was also observed in cells replicating Norwalk virus, which may contribute to pathogenesis by interfering with cellular processes that are dependent on an intact secretory pathway. These results indicate that the ER export signal mimic is critical to the antagonistic function of p22, shown herein to be a novel antagonist of ER/Golgi trafficking. This unique and well-conserved human norovirus motif is therefore an appealing target for antiviral drug development

    Implications of Variability in Clinical Bedside Swallowing Assessment Practices by Speech Language Pathologists

The final publication is available at link.springer.com.Speech language pathology (SLP) clinical bedside swallowing assessments (CBSA) are a cornerstone of quality care for patients in acute hospitals who have dysphagia. The CBSA informs clinical diagnosis and decisions regarding further instrumental assessment, and is used to develop a management plan and monitor progress. However, self-report and retrospective research shows that SLPs are highly variable in their use of assessment components considered by experts to be important for quality CBSA, casting doubt on the validity and reliability of CBSA. This prospective study describes the components included by SLPs when designing a standardised evidence based dysphagia assessment protocol for acute care patients and observed patterns of component use. The findings confirm that SLPs use the CBSA for multiple purposes beyond diagnosis of aspiration risk and dysphagia presence/severity. They are highly variable in their use of certain components, but also demonstrate consistent use of a core set. It is apparent that SLPs prioritise the application of clinical reasoning to tailor their CBSA to the patient over following a highly structured item-based protocol. The variability in component use likely reflects a complex clinical reasoning process that draws on a wide variety of information combined with expert knowledge as is also observed in many other medical specialties. Rather than promoting the standardisation of CBSA protocols that constrain SLP practice to strict item-based assessment protocols, consideration should be given to promoting the value and facilitating the clinical reasoning process that supports the utility of the CBSA for diagnosis, patient centred management and treatment planning.Springer Science+Business Media New Yor

    Initial trail results of a magnetic biosensor for the rapid detection of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Virus (PRRSV) infection

    © 2019 The resonant coil magnetometer quantifies paramagnetic particles (PMPs) and has been used to develop magneto-immunoassays in a range of formats. The advantage of magneto-immunoassays is that they are relatively inexpensive, portable, easy to perform and give results in under 5 min. Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Virus (PRRSV) is an infection of domesticated pigs producing large economic losses in the swine industry current diagnosis is performed using commercially available ELISA kits. Here we describe the development of a competitive magneto-immunoassay (MIA) and pilot study with porcine serum samples. The data show that this technology has the potential for use as a rapid and portable in field system for the detection of antibodies in porcine serum to PRRSV. A range of assay parameters and magnetometer settings were optimised, including the concentration of antibody conjugated PMPs used in the assay and movement of an external magnet to pull particles to a sensor surface. PRRSV positive control serum demonstrated competition with antibody conjugated PMPs with a dose dependent relationship. The magneto-immunoassay developed showed good agreement with the PRRS IDEXX X3 ELISA. The PRRSV magneto-immunoassay demonstrated a sensitivity of 73% and specificity of 100%. The results suggest that a rapid assay using the magnetometer technology detects specific anti-PRRSV antibody in pig serum. The magneto-immunoassay is suitable for use as a rapid ‘on-site’ method for the serological detection of PRRSV infection

    Low-Temperature Bonding of Copper Pillars for All-Copper Chipto-Substrate Interconnections

    A copper-to-copper bonding process was developed for an all-copper, chip-to-substrate interconnect technology. High aspect ratio polymer molds for electroplating were formed using a photodefinable polymer on both the chip and the substrate surfaces. Copper pillars were fabricated by electroplating metal in the polymer molds. The chip-to-substrate all-copper connections were formed by joining the two pillars with electroless copper plating followed by an anneal process. The copper-to-copper bonding of the high aspect ratio pillars does not require the use of solder or other noncopper metals. Mechanical shear force measurements were used to characterize the bonding process as a function of annealing conditions. Excellent bond strength of the electrolessly joined pillars was achieved with a 250°C anneal, with the bond strength of the copper pillar interconnects exceeding 148 MPa. High aspect ratio pillars can provide mechanical compliance, and the electroless fabrication method compensates for pillar misalignment and nonplanarity of the bonded surfaces

    Extreme deuterium enrichment in stratospheric hydrogen and the global atmospheric budget of H_2

    Molecular hydrogen (H_2) is the second most abundant trace gas in the atmosphere after methane (CH_4). In the troposphere, the D/H ratio of H_2 is enriched by 120‰ relative to the world's oceans. This cannot be explained by the sources of H_2 for which the D/H ratio has been measured to date (for example, fossil fuels and biomass burning). But the isotopic composition of H_2 from its single largest source—the photochemical oxidation of methane—has yet to be determined. Here we show that the D/H ratio of stratospheric H2 develops enrichments greater than 440‰, the most extreme D/H enrichment observed in a terrestrial material. We estimate the D/H ratio of H_2 produced from CH_4 in the stratosphere, where production is isolated from the influences of non-photochemical sources and sinks, showing that the chain of reactions producing H_2 from CH_4 concentrates D in the product H_2. This enrichment, which we estimate is similar on a global average in the troposphere, contributes substantially to the D/H ratio of tropospheric H_2

    Master of Public Service and Administration Program Review and Evaluation

    Assessing the quality and effectiveness of educational programs is becoming increasingly important. Ensuring the quality of Master of Public Administration (MPA) programs, like that at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, is even more critical. This capstone designed and implemented evaluative methods to assess the MPSA program. The group designed and conducted data collection and analysis to identify the program�s strengths and limitations by collecting alumni feedback. This project helped the MPSA program meet accreditation requirements and provided input to the next self-study report to be completed by the program during the 2012-2013 academic year. The capstone created and distributed an alumni survey to MPSA graduates and conducted alumni focus groups.
