Revisiting Supervision for Continual Representation Learning
In the field of continual learning, models are designed to learn tasks one
after the other. While most research has centered on supervised continual
learning, recent studies have highlighted the strengths of self-supervised
continual representation learning. The improved transferability of
representations built with self-supervised methods is often associated with the
role played by the multi-layer perceptron projector. In this work, we depart
from this observation and reexamine the role of supervision in continual
representation learning. We reckon that additional information, such as human
annotations, should not deteriorate the quality of representations. Our
findings show that supervised models when enhanced with a multi-layer
perceptron head, can outperform self-supervised models in continual
representation learning
Bayesian Flow Networks in Continual Learning
Bayesian Flow Networks (BFNs) has been recently proposed as one of the most
promising direction to universal generative modelling, having ability to learn
any of the data type. Their power comes from the expressiveness of neural
networks and Bayesian inference which make them suitable in the context of
continual learning. We delve into the mechanics behind BFNs and conduct the
experiments to empirically verify the generative capabilities on non-stationary
data.Comment: Submitted to NeurIPS 2023 Workshop on Diffusion Model
Stress Responsive Non-protein Coding RNAs
Environmental or growth conditions are constantly influencing the development and maturation of organisms. To ensure precise control of gene expression under these normal as well as stress conditions, organisms developed very accurate molecular regulatory mechanisms at transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels. Key roles of small noncoding RNAs (miRNAs and siRNAs) in regulation of gene expression are no longer astonishing us nor are constantly emerging new classes of non-protein coding RNAs (tRNA-derived small RNAs, snoRNA-derived small RNAs, mRNA-derived small RNAs, and long non-coding RNAs). Although there is evidence of involvement of those various classes of noncoding RNAs in response to stress conditions, in most cases, we are still lacking basic information on their targets and interplay between different regulatory pathways. In this review, we focus on “canonical” and “noncanonical” noncoding RNAs and their involvement in abiotic stress responses
Public perception of plant gene technologies worldwide in the light of food security
Achieving global food security is becoming increasingly challenging and many stakeholders around the world are searching for new ways to reach this demanding goal. Here we demonstrate examples of genetically modified and genome edited plants introduced to the market in different world regions. Transgenic crops are regulated based on the characteristics of the product in many countries including the United States and Canada, while the European Union, India, China, and others regulate process-based i.e., on how the product was made. We also present the public perception of state-of-the-art plant gene technologies in different regions of the world in the past 20 years. The results of literature analysis show that the public in Europe and North America is more familiar with the notion of genome editing and genetically modified organisms than the public in other world regionspublishedVersio
Ferromagnetic semiconductors
The current status and prospects of research on ferromagnetism in
semiconductors are reviewed. The question of the origin of ferromagnetism in
europium chalcogenides, chromium spinels and, particularly, in diluted magnetic
semiconductors is addressed. The nature of electronic states derived from 3d of
magnetic impurities is discussed in some details. Results of a quantitative
comparison between experimental and theoretical results, notably for Mn-based
III-V and II-VI compounds, are presented. This comparison demonstrates that the
current theory of the exchange interactions mediated by holes in the valence
band describes correctly the values of Curie temperatures T_C magnetic
anisotropy, domain structure, and magnetic circular dichroism. On this basis,
chemical trends are examined and show to lead to the prediction of
semiconductor systems with T_C that may exceed room temperature, an expectation
that are being confirmed by recent findings. Results for materials containing
magnetic ions other than Mn are also presented emphasizing that the double
exchange involving hoping through d states may operate in those systems.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures; special issue of Semicon. Sci. Technol. on

Architektura Miasto Piękno tom 2
"Wydział Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej zawsze był miejscem pełnym osobowości,
indywidualności, talentów. Gdy profesorowie i mistrzowie odchodzili z Wydziału,
pokolenia kontynuują i budują historię Wydziału. Wydział pełen jest wspomnień
i anegdot. W fotografiach, księgach, obrazach, meblach kryją się opowieści."(...
The Influence of Scientists, Agricultural Advisors, and Farmers on Innovative Agrobiotechnology
Agrobiotechnology is one of the most innovative fields of science, and its achievements are widely used in knowledge-based bioeconomy (KBBE). At the same time, some products in several countries arouse public controversy; 75% of Poles are against using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food and feed production. It should be stressed that scientists involved in molecular research play a crucial role in technological progress, as well as farmers and agricultural advisors responsible for the information flow. In order to identify the determinants underlying the perception of GMOs, qualitative and quantitative studies were carried out in 2012 and 2013 in Poland. Results of this study revealed that scientists were rather optimistic about the use of genetic engineering in the economy, agricultural advisors were mostly against the use of GMOs in food and feed production, and farmers showed particular interest in the profitability and safety of specific GM products
The special situation of GM feeds in Poland in the light of the latest case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union
We discus legal status of plants obtained using NBT: whether they are to be treated as GMOs or not. The conclusion may have a negative impact on the development of research on them and their practical use. The problem of the application of provisions on GMOs in relation to the products of some of the NBT has been the subject of the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Case C-528/16 – this topic is analyzed in details
Estimation of risk caused by genetically modified plants
Genetically modified plants are critically important for the future bioeconomy in Poland as well as in United Europe. We observe discussions and polemics all around Europe concerning potential risk related to the effects of GM plants, particularly connected with environment, receiving organisms and long term effects. Any reproducible scientific data describing negative effects are available. However, we need solid and based on science legislation system
