Growth, expectations and tariffs

We study a many-country endogenous growth model in which decisions about innovation and new investment are influenced by growth expectations. Adaptive learning dynamics determine the country-specific short-run transition paths. The countries differ in basic structural parameters and may impose tariffs on imports of capital goods. Numerical experiments illustrate the adjustment dynamics that follow the use of tariffs. We show that countries that limit trade in capital goods can experience dynamic gains both in growth and in utility and that such gains persist longer the larger the structural advantages of the region that applies tariffs. Substantial differences in levels of innovation, consumption, output and utility can appear, and asymmetries in economic outcomes that were present before trade restrictions are made more severe.endogenous growth; expectations; learning; short-run dynamics; tariffs; complementary capital goods

Increasing Returns, Learning, and Beneficial Tax Competition;

We analyze the welfare impact of entrepreneur mobility in a two-country model. Increasing returns in production yield multiple equilibria that are stable under adaptive learning. Governments compete for the mobile resource by setting income taxes. We show that large welfare gains can arise from noncooperative taxation. If expectational barriers prevent the realization of high output equilibria, tax competition can sufficiently perturb expectations so that high steady states become attainable. Once in a high production regime, governments may institute cooperative tax increases or reductions so as to bring the economy to the global joint optimum without disturbing the regime

Hammasamalgaamin käyttö vuonna 2021 ja käytöstä luopuminen vuoteen 2030 mennessä : EU-asetukseen pohjautuva kansallinen selvitys

Elohopea on ympäristömyrkky, jonka yksi suurimmista lähteistä Euroopassa on hammasamalgaami. Elohopean käyttöä säädellään Yhdistyneiden Kansakuntien kansainvälisellä sopimuksella, Euroopan Unionin asetuksella ja Suomen kansallisella lainsäädännöllä. Suomessa amalgaamin käyttö hampaiden paikka-aineena lopetetaan EU:n asetuksen edellyttämässä aikataulussa vuoteen 2030 mennessä. Tässä raportissa kuvataan amalgaamin käytön ja amalgaamijätteen käsittelyn nykytilanne sekä toimenpiteet käytön lopettamiseksi ja jätteen käsittelemiseksi asianmukaisesti. Nykytilanteen selvittämiseksi toteutetun kyselyn mukaan yhä harvempi hammaslääkäri käyttää enää amalgaamia hampaiden paikkauksessa. Jo aiemmissa selvityksissä todettu vähenevä trendi johtuu pääasiassa muovipaikka-aineiden kehittymisestä ja lisääntyneistä esteettisistä vaatimuksista. Ympäristön kannalta uusia amalgaamitäytteitä suurempi kuormitus vastaanotoilla syntyy, kun vanhoja täytteitä puretaan ja hampaita poistetaan. Purkamisessa syntyvä jäte ohjautuu amalgaamin erottimien kautta ongelmajätteeksi, mutta poistettuja amalgaamilla paikattuja hampaita ja amalgaamilla kontaminoitunutta materiaalia voi päätyä sekajätteeksi. Toiminta tulee muuttaa niin, että myös nämä jätteet käsitellään ongelmajätteenä. Amalgaamin käytöstä luopuminen ei heikennä potilasturvallisuutta eikä se vaikuta merkittävästi palveluntuottajien toimintaan

Gains and Losses from Tax Competition with Migration

We consider international labour (entrepreneur) mobility in a two-country overlapping-generations model. Interactions of decreasing and increasing returns in production yield multiple equilibria that are stable under adaptive learning. Governments have a unilateral incentive to reduce income taxes at the joint optimum. We compare the Nash equlibrium in taxes under full labour mobility to the closed economy with no mobility. Despite strategic tax setting, the free mobility outcome is often better in welfare terms. Large, discrete gains in welfare may be attained because of the tax competition. Expectational barriers for discrete welfare improvements can be overcome through tax competition

Online discussions mirroring family life during pregnancy

Objective The aim of this study was to find out what aspects of their parenthood parents revealed, and how they expressed their thoughts concerning maternity care services on an online communication forum. Background The 'Information Society' offers a growing variety of health services as part of public primary health care via the internet. Little is known about the contents produced online by pregnant families, and how they reflect on both family life and maternity care services. Methods The data for this study were obtained from online discussions between families (n=21) in Net Clinic, an internet-based service designed for public maternity care. The data included experiences of family life during pregnancy, childbirth and parenting, and was analysed by inductive content analysis. Results While maturing into parenthood, both women and men recognised the uniqueness of their new role and wanted to prepare for safe childbirth. Online communication in the home environment nourished new social networks among families who were expecting their first, second or third child. In addition, families reflected on maternity care services on the Net Clinic's communication forum. This provided realistic feedback to maternity care professionals. Conclusions Today, the relationship between clients and professionals is inevitably changing. More online services and advocacy are needed if families are to have access to online health services. The role of professionals is diversifying from being authorities to supporting and facilitating clients' individual self-care. Based on direct client feedback, the quality of maternity care can be improved
