Variability and the X-ray/UV ratio of Active Galactic Nuclei
The observed relation between the X-ray radiation from AGNs, originating in
the corona, and the optical/UV radiation from the disk is usually described by
the anticorrelation between the UV to X-ray slope alpha_ox and the UV
luminosity. Many factors can affect this relation, including: enhanced X-ray
emission associated with the jets of radio-loud AGNs; X-ray absorption
associated with the UV Broad Absorption Line (BAL) outflows; other X-ray
absorption not associated with BALs; intrinsic X-ray weakness; UV and X-ray
variability, and non-simultaneity of UV and X-ray observations. The separation
of these effects provides information about the intrinsic alpha_ox-L_UV
relation and its dispersion, constraining models of disk-corona coupling. We
extract simultaneous data from the second XMM-Newton serendipitous source
catalogue and the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor Serendipitous UV Source Survey
Catalog, and derive the single-epoch alpha_ox indices. We use ensemble
structure functions to analyse multi-epoch data. We confirm the anticorrelation
of alpha_ox with L_UV, and do not find any evidence of a dependence of alpha_ox
on z. The dispersion in our simultaneous data (0.12) is not significantly
smaller than in previous non-simultaneous studies, suggesting that "artificial
alpha_ox variability" introduced by non-simultaneity is not the main cause of
dispersion. "Intrinsic alpha_ox variability", i.e., the true variability of the
X-ray to optical ratio, is instead important, and accounts for ~30% of the
total variance, or more. "Inter-source dispersion", due to intrinsic
differences in the average alpha_ox values from source to source, is also
important. The dispersion introduced by variability is mostly caused by the
long timescale variations, which are expected to be driven by the optical

Infectious agents in atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases through oxidative stress
Accumulating evidence demonstrates that vascular oxidative stress is a critical feature of atherosclerotic process, potentially triggered by several infectious agents that are considered as risk co-factors for the atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). C. pneumoniae has been shown to upregulate multiple enzymatic systems capable of producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as NADPH oxidase (NOX) and cyclooxygenase in vascular endothelial cells, NOX and cytochrome c oxidase in macrophages as well as nitric oxide synthase and lipoxygenase in platelets contributing to both early and late stages of atherosclerosis. P. gingivalis seems to be markedly involved in the atherosclerotic process as compared to A. actinomycetemcomitans contributing to LDL oxidation and foam cell formation. Particularly interesting is the evidence describing the NLRP3 inflammasome activation as a new molecular mechanism underlying P. gingivalis-induced oxidative stress and inflammation. Amongst viral agents, immunodeficiency virus-1 and hepatitis C virus seem to have a major role in promoting ROS production, contributing, hence, to the early stages of atherosclerosis including endothelial dysfunction and LDL oxidation. In conclusion, oxidative mechanisms activated by several infectious agents during the atherosclerotic process underlying CVDs are very complex and not well-known, remaining, thus, an attractive target for future research
A multi-epoch spectroscopic study of the BAL quasar APM 08279+5255: I. C IV absorption variability
Broad Absorption Lines indicate gas outflows with velocities from thousands
km/s to about 0.2 the speed of light, which may be present in all quasars and
may play a major role in the evolution of the host galaxy. The variability of
absorption patterns can provide informations on changes of the density and
velocity distributions of the absorbing gas and its ionization status. We
collected 23 photometrical and spectro-photometrical observations at the 1.82m
Telescope of the Asiago Observatory since 2003, plus other 5 spectra from the
literature. We analysed the evolution in time of the equivalent width of the
broad absorption feature and two narrow absorption systems, the correlation
among them and with the R band magnitude. We performed a structure function
analysis of the equivalent width variations. We present an unprecedented
monitoring of a broad absorption line quasar based on 28 epochs in 14 years.
The shape of broad absorption feature shows a relative stability, while its
equivalent width slowly declines until it sharply increases during 2011. In the
same time the R magnitude stays almost constant until it sharply increases
during 2011. The equivalent width of the narrow absorption redwards of the
systemic redshift only shows a decline. The broad absorption behaviour suggests
changes of the ionisation status as the main cause of variability. We show for
the first time a correlation of this variability with the R band flux. The
different behaviour of the narrow absorption system might be due to
recombination time delay. The structure function of the absorption variability
has a slope comparable with typical optical variability of quasars. This is
consistent with variations of the 200 A ionising flux originating in the inner

Drug resistance in B and non-B subtypes amongst subjects recently diagnosed as primary/recent or chronic HIV-infected over the period 2013–2016: Impact on susceptibility to first-line strategies including integrase strand-transfer inhibitors
Objectives To characterize the prevalence of transmitted drug resistance mutations (TDRMs) by plasma analysis of 750 patients at the time of HIV diagnosis from January 1, 2013 to November 16, 2016 in the Veneto region (Italy), where all drugs included in the recommended first line therapies were prescribed, included integrase strand transfer inhibitors (InNSTI). Methods TDRMs were defined according to the Stanford HIV database algorithm. Results Subtype B was the most prevalent HIV clade (67.3%). A total of 92 patients (12.3%) were expected to be resistant to one drug at least, most with a single class mutation (60/68–88.2% in subtype B infected subjectsand 23/24–95.8% in non-B subjects) and affecting mainly NNRTIs. No significant differences were observed between the prevalence rates of TDRMs involving one or more drugs, except for the presence of E138A quite only in patients with B subtype and other NNRTI in subjects with non-B infection. The diagnosis of primary/recent infection was made in 73 patients (9.7%): they had almost only TDRMs involving a single class. Resistance to InSTI was studied in 484 subjects (53 with primary-recent infection), one patient had 143C in 2016, a total of thirteen 157Q mutations were detected (only one in primary/recent infection). Conclusions Only one major InSTI-TDRM was identified but monitoring of TDRMs should continue in the light of continuing presence of NNRTI-related mutation amongst newly diagnosed subjects, sometime impacting also to modern NNRTI drugs recommended in first-line therapy
Probiotics Reduce Inflammation in Antiretroviral Treated, HIV-Infected Individuals: Results of the "Probio-HIV" Clinical Trial
BACKGROUND: HIV infection results in damage to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, microbial translocation and immune activation. These are not completely normalized with combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). Moreover, increate morbidity and mortality of cART-treated HIV-infected individuals is associated with inflammation.
METHODS: In order to enhance GI tract immunity, we recruited and treated 20 HIV-infected humans with cART supplemented with probiotics and followed inflammation and immunological parameters (clinical trial number NCT02164344). 11 HIV seronegative subjects were included as control group. The enumeration of CD4+, CD8+, CD38+ and HLA-DR+ lymphocytes were evaluated on peripheral blood; HIV-RNA levels, sCD14, d-dimer, C-reactive protein (CRP) high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), IL-6 and Lipopolysaccharide Binding Protein (LBP) were assayed on plasma.
RESULTS: We observe that cART does not normalize the levels of immune activation in HIV positive patients anyway inflammation and markers of microbial translocation were significantly reduced with probiotic supplementation. Patients show a clear and statistically significant reduction in the levels of immune activation on CD4 T-lymphocytes, for both markers CD38 and HLA-DR and their simultaneous expression, LBP and hsCRP plasma levels after probiotic diet supplementation settling to values comparable to controls.
CONCLUSIONS: Supplementing cART with probiotics in HIV-infected individuals may improve GI tract immunity and there by mitigate inflammatory sequelae, ultimately improving prognosis
Spontaneous immunogenicity of ribosomal P0 protein in patients with benign and malignant breast lesions and delay of mammary tumor growth in P0-vaccinated mice
A common carboxyl-terminal epitope (C-22 P0) of the ribosomal P proteins (P0, P1 and P2) was shown to elicit autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and in head and neck cancer patients. In this report we provide evidence for the in vivo immunogenicity of the P0 protein in breast cancer patients. Using recombinant P proteins, we demonstrated that sera from breast carcinoma patients (8/75) displayed significant reactivity to P0 protein when compared with healthy donor sera (0/45). Four out of the eight sera showed simultaneous reactivity to all P proteins. Breast benign tumor (3/17) and mammary hyperplasia (3/17) patient sera also showed significant reactivity to P proteins, thus suggesting that the occurrence of P protein autoantibodies might reveal mammary cell cycle dysregulation. Patient sera reacting with all P proteins recognized C-22 P0. Anti-P0 autoantibodies did not correlate with prognostic parameters of breast carcinomas. High level expression of C-22 P0 was found in mammary carcinomas compared with normal adjacent epithelium and benign lesions. To determine the antitumor activity of P0 as an immunogen, BALB-neuT transgenic mice displaying age-related breast cancer progression were vaccinated using xenogeneic P0 at the stage of mammary atypical hyperplasia. P0 vaccination significantly delayed the onset of mouse mammary tumors that overexpressed C-22 P0. Sera from P0 vaccinated mice recognized C-22 P0. Evidence for immunity to the P0 protein, its overexpression in carcinomas and its peculiar surface localization on cancer cells, along with its antitumor activity as an immunogen might be relevant for the use of P0 protein in monitoring cancer progression and in planning immunotherapeutic strategies
Testing the blazar spectral sequence: X-ray selected blazars
We present simultaneous optical and X-ray data from Swift for a sample of
FSRQs selected from the EMSS survey. We present also a complete analysis of
Swift and INTEGRAL data on 4 blazars recently discussed as possibly challenging
the trends of the "blazar spectral sequence". The SEDs of all these objects are
modelled in terms of a general theoretical scheme leading to an estimate of the
jets' physical parameters. Our results show that, in the case of the EMSS broad
line blazars, X-ray selection does not lead to find sources with synchrotron
peaks in the UV/X-ray range, as was the case for X-ray selected BL Lacs.
Instead, for a wide range of radio powers all the sources with broad emission
lines show similar SEDs, with synchrotron components peaking below the
optical/UV range. Of the remaining 4 "anomalous" blazars, two highly luminous
sources with broad lines, claimed to possibly emit synchrotron X-rays, are
shown to be better described with IC models for their X-ray emission. For one
source with weak emission lines (a BL Lac object) a synchrotron peak in the
soft X-ray range is confirmed, while for the fourth source, exhibiting lines
typical of NLSy1s, no evidence of X-ray emission from a relativistic jet is
found. We reexamine the original "blazar spectral sequence" and suggest that
the photon ambient, in which the particle acceleration and emission occur, is
likely the main factor determining the shape of the blazar SED.Comment: 11 figures and 6 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Observations and properties of candidate high frequency GPS radio sources in the AT20G survey
We used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to obtain 40 GHz and 95
GHz observations of a number of sources that were selected from the Australia
Telescope Compact Array 20 GHz (AT20G) survey . The aim of the observations was
to improve the spectral coverage for sources with spectral peaks near 20 GHz or
inverted (rising) radio spectra between 8.6 GHz and 20 GHz. We present the
radio observations of a sample of 21 such sources along with optical spectra
taken from the ANU Siding Spring Observatory 2.3m telescope and the ESO-New
Technology Telescope (NTT). We find that as a group the sources show the same
level of variability as typical GPS sources, and that of the 21 candidate GPS
sources roughly 60% appear to be genuinely young radio galaxies. Three of the
21 sources studied show evidence of being restarted radio galaxies. If these
numbers are indicative of the larger population of AT20G radio sources then as
many as 400 genuine GPS sources could be contained within the AT20G with up to

Dynamical Black Hole Masses of BL Lac Objects from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We measure black hole masses for 71 BL Lac objects from the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey with redshifts out to z~0.4. We perform spectral decompositions of their
nuclei from their host galaxies and measure their stellar velocity dispersions.
Black hole masses are then derived from the black hole mass - stellar velocity
dispersion relation. We find BL Lac objects host black holes of similar masses,
~10^{8.5} M_sun, with a dispersion of 0.4 dex, similar to the uncertainties on
each black hole measurement. Therefore, all BL Lac objects in our sample have
the same indistinguishable black hole mass. These 71 BL Lac objects follow the
black hole mass - bulge luminosity relation, and their narrow range of host
galaxy luminosities confirm previous claims that BL Lac host galaxies can be
treated as standard candles. We conclude that the observed diversity in the
shapes of BL Lac object spectral energy distributions is not strongly driven by
