    Immobilized photosensitizers for antimicrobial applications

    Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) is a very promising alternative to conventional antibiotics for the efficient inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms; this is due to the fact that it is virtually impossible for resistant strains to develop due to the mode of action employed. PACT employs a photosensitizer, which preferentially associates with the microorganism, and is then activated with non-thermal visible light of appropriate wavelength(s) to generate high localized concentrations of reactive oxygen species (ROS), inactivating the microorganism. The concept of using photosensitizers immobilized on a surface for this purpose is intended to address a range of economic, ecological and public health issues. Photosensitising molecules that have been immobilized on solid support for PACT applications are described herein.     The part of the geostationary (GEO) orbital arc used for United States domestic fixed, communications service is rapidly becoming filled with satellites. One of the factors currently limiting its utilization is that communications satellites must be designed to have sufficient capacity to handle peak traffic leads, and thus are under utilized most of the time. A solution is to use satellites in suitable non-geostationary orbits to unload the traffic peaks. Three different designs for a non-geostationary orbit communications satellite system are presented for the 1995 time frame. The economic performance is analyzed and compared with geostationary satellites for two classes of service, trunking and customer premise service. The result is that the larger payload of the non-geostationary satellite offsets the burdens of increased complexity and worse radiation environment to give improved economic performance. Depending on ground terminal configuration, the improved economic performance of the space segment may be offset by increased ground terminal expenses

    Development of basic theories and techniques for determining stresses in rotating turbine or compressor blades

    A method for measuring in-plane displacement of a rotating structure by using two laser speckle photographs is described. From the displacement measurements one can calculate strains and stresses due to a centrifugal load. This technique involves making separate speckle photographs of a test model. One photograph is made with the model loaded (model is rotating); the second photograph is made with no load on the model (model is stationary). A sandwich is constructed from the two speckle photographs and data are recovered in a manner similar to that used with conventional speckle photography. The basic theory, experimental procedures of this method, and data analysis of a simple rotating specimen are described. In addition the measurement of in-plane surface displacement components of a deformed solid, and the application of the coupled laser speckle interferometry and boundary-integral solution technique to two dimensional elasticity problems are addressed

    We report theoretical calculations on the effect of the multiple orbital contribution in high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from aligned CO2_2 with inclusion of macroscopic propagation of harmonic fields in the medium. Our results show very good agreements with recent experiments for the dynamics of the minimum in HHG spectra as laser intensity or alignment angle changes. Calculations are carried out to check how the position of the minimum in HHG spectra depends on the degrees of molecular alignment, laser focusing conditions, and the effects of alignment-dependent ionization rates of the different molecular orbitals. These analyses help to explain why the minima observed in different experiments may vary.Comment: 7 figure

    Selected atmospheric conditions observed near Space Shuttle STS-8 launch time on August 30, 1983, at Kennedy Space Center, Florida are summarized. Values of ambient pressure, temperature, moisture, ground winds, visual observations (cloud), and winds aloft are included. The sequence of prelaunch Jimsphere measured vertical wind profiles is given. Also presented are wind and thermodynamic parameters representative of surface and aloft conditions in the SRB descent/impact ocean area.     Does a loaded warm-up influence jump asymmetry and badminton-specific change of direction performance?

    Purpose: Previously, it has been shown that loaded warm-up (LWU) can improve change of direction speed (CODS) in professional badminton players. However, the effect of asymmetry on CODS in badminton players and the influence of LWU on asymmetry has not been examined. Methods: Twenty-one amateur badminton players (age: 29.5 ± 8.4; playing experience: 8.4 ± 4.2 years) completed two trials. In the first, they performed a control warm-up (CWU). In the second, they performed the same warm-up but with three exercises loaded with a weight vest (LWU). Following both warm-ups, players completed single leg jump (SLCMJ) and badminton-specific CODS tests. Results: No significant differences between CWU and LWU were observed for CODS, SLCMJ or SLCMJ asymmetry. However, small effect sizes suggested faster CODS (mean difference: -5%; d = -0.32) and lower asymmetries (mean difference: -3%; d = -0.39) following LWU. Five players (24%) experienced CODS improvements greater than the minimum detectable change whilst two (10%) responded negatively. Asymmetry was not correlated with CODS following CWU (ρ = 0.079; p = 0.733) but was negatively associated with CODS after LWU (ρ = -0.491; p = 0.035). Conclusion: LWU may prove a strategy to trial on an individual basis but generic recommendations should not be applied
