Groundwater fluxes and flow paths within coastal barriers: Observations from a large-scale laboratory experiment (BARDEX II)
The dynamics of groundwater at the beach face landocean boundary have important implications to the exchange of water, nutrients, and pollutants between the ocean and coastal aquifers, and more subtly, varying groundwater levels may induce differing morphological response at the beach face. As a component of the multi-institution Barrier Dynamics Experiment (BARDEX II), groundwater fluxes and flow paths within a prototype-scale sandy barrier are quantified and reported at the three fundamental spatio-temporal scales (individual waves, the beach face, and total barrier), under controlled wave and water level conditions. A particular feature of the experimental programme was the inclusion of a back-barrier lagoon, that via a pump system and an intermediate water reservoir enabled the forcing of contrasting hydraulic gradients across the barrier. It was observed that the groundwater level, flow paths, and fluxes within the beach face region of the sand barrier were predominantly controlled by the action of waves at the beach face, regardless of the overall seaward- or landward-directed barrier-scale hydraulic gradients. In the presence of waves, all tests undertaken to complete this study developed a seaward gradient in this zone under the influence of waves. As a further result of wave forcing at the beach face boundary, localised groundwater flow divides were observed to develop, further partitioning the circulation and flow paths of groundwater within the prototype-scale sand barrier
A model of the Universe including Dark Energy accounted for by both a Quintessence Field and a (negative) Cosmological Constant
In this work we present a model of the universe in which dark energy is
modelled explicitely with both a dynamical quintessence field and a
cosmological constant. Our results confirm the possibility of a future
collapsing universe (for a given region of the parameter space), which is
necessary for a consistent formulation of string theory and quantum field
theory. We have also reproduced the measurements of modulus distance from
supernovae with good accuracy.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, only the results for the single exponential

Low-energy quasiparticle excitations in dirty d-wave superconductors and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes kicked rotator
We investigate the quasiparticle density of states in disordered d-wave
superconductors. By constructing a quantum map describing the quasiparticle
dynamics in such a medium, we explore deviations of the density of states from
its universal form (), and show that additional low-energy
quasiparticle states exist provided (i) the range of the impurity potential is
much larger than the Fermi wavelength [allowing to use recently developed
semiclassical methods]; (ii) classical trajectories exist along which the
pair-potential changes sign; and (iii) the diffractive scattering length is
longer than the superconducting coherence length. In the classically chaotic
regime, universal random matrix theory behavior is restored by quantum
dynamical diffraction which shifts the low energy states away from zero energy,
and the quasiparticle density of states exhibits a linear pseudogap below an
energy threshold .Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTe
Resummation of the hadronic tau decay width with the modified Borel transform method
A modified Borel transform of the Adler function is used to resum the
hadronic tau decay width ratio. In contrast to the ordinary Borel transform,
the integrand of the Borel integral is renormalization--scale invariant. We use
an ansatz which explicitly accounts for the structure of the leading infrared
renormalon. Further, we use judiciously chosen conformal transformations for
the Borel variable, in order to map sufficiently away from the origin the other
ultraviolet and infrared renormalon singularities. In addition, we apply Pade
approximants for the corresponding truncated perturbation series of the
modified Borel transform, in order to further accelerate the convergence.
Comparing the results with the presently available experimental data on the tau
hadronic decay width ratio, we obtain . These predictions
virtually agree with those of our previous resummations where we used ordinary
Borel transforms instead.Comment: 32 pages, 2 eps-figures, revtex; minor changes in the formulations; a
