Developing teaching and learning programmes for new lecturers in higher education to allow for exploration of the link between research and teaching: a collaborative UK/Canadian project

This is an ESCalate development project led by Lisa Lucas of the University of Bristol and completed in 2009. It looks at teaching and learning programmes for new lecturers in the UK and Canada, specifically the link between research and teaching. The aim of this project was to develop innovative materials and activities, and collect best practice examples that focus on the link between research and teaching that can be utilised within university Teaching and Learning in Higher Education programmes for new lecturers. A comparison between the UK and Canada was taken in order to provide an international perspective on this issue and to help develop materials that would be relevant in different national contexts. It looks at the policy contexts in the UK and Canada, reviews some example teaching and learning programmes and explores the views of early career academics in terms of linking teaching and research. Melanoma of the Hand: Current Practice and New Frontiers

Melanoma of the hand represents a complicated clinical entity. Anatomic features of the hand create challenges in successful management of melanoma not encountered elsewhere in the body. The objectives of this article are to outline current standards for managing melanoma of the hand including diagnosis, surgical, and chemotherapeutic management. Particular emphasis will be placed on currently debated topics of the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy, the role of Mohs micrographic surgery, tissue sparing management of subungual melanoma, and the consideration of melanoma of the hand as a distinct entity based on clinical and molecular studies

The economic performance of the New England states in 2004: an overview

The year 2004 marked the beginning of New England’s economic turnaround. After three consecutive years of job losses — not to mention 86 years of World Series famine — the region emerged victorious. All six New England states added jobs over the course of the year and experienced reductions in unemployment. Job growth in the region, however, was sluggish compared with the nation overall. Recovery was also reflected in strong exports growth, increases in the economic activity index, and improved consumer confidence. Enhancing Student Learning of ERP and Business Process Knowledge through Hands-On ERP Exercises in an Introductory Management of Information Systems Course

Organizations are in need of business graduates who understand how enterprise systems and integrated business processes work. Business schools are increasingly incorporating Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems into their programs to address this need. Using hands-on ERP exercises is one initiative that could enhance student learning of these vital topics. How can business schools integrate hands-on exercises to ensure all business graduates have the opportunity to develop this knowledge? This paper investigates using hands-on ERP exercises in an Introductory Management of Information Systems (IS) course to enhance student learning of ERP and business process concepts. Data will be collected using a pre and post survey designed to measure ERP and business process knowledge. Then t-tests will be utilized to determine if differences exist after exposure to the course material and the hands-on exercises

Reeling in Big Phish with a Deep MD5 Net

Phishing continues to grow as phishers discover new exploits and attack vectors for hosting malicious content; the traditional response using takedowns and blacklists does not appear to impede phishers significantly. A handful of law enforcement projects — for example the FBI\u27s Digital PhishNet and the Internet Crime and Complaint Center (ic3.gov) — have demonstrated that they can collect phishing data in substantial volumes, but these collections have not yet resulted in a significant decline in criminal phishing activity. In this paper, a new system is demonstrated for prioritizing investigative resources to help reduce the time and effort expended examining this particular form of online criminal activity. This research presents a means to correlate phishing websites by showing that certain websites are created by the same phishing kit. Such kits contain the content files needed to create the counterfeit website and often contain additional clues to the identity of the creators. A clustering algorithm is presented that uses collected phishing kits to establish clusters of related phishing websites. The ability to correlate websites provides law enforcement or other potential stakeholders with a means for prioritizing the allocation of limited investigative resources by identifying frequently repeating phishing offenders

Examination of Edge Effects with Different Storage Conditions of Preplated Dimethyl Sulfoxide Nanospots in ChemLib 1,536- and 3,456-Well Assay-Ready Plates

For ultra-high-throughput screening, 10–30 nl of compound dissolved in 75% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/25% water (vol/vol) is spotted into 1,536- and 3,456-well ChemLib™ plates (Aurora Biotechnologies, Carlsbad, CA) and stored appropriately for a short time before screening. Although this practice eliminates the compound plating bottleneck, plated volumes of DMSO slowly evaporate from assay wells if plates are not properly stored in the interim. Since many assays are sensitive to DMSO concentrations, even slight evaporation may cause intra-plate variation and thus decrease assay quality. Using a cytochrome P450 3A4 Vivid® Blue assay (Invitrogen, Carlsbad), we investigated the rate, pattern, and quantity of evaporation over a 1-year time frame to identify best practices for long-term (i.e., 6 months or greater) storage of assay-ready compound plates. Our findings regarding evaporation at plate edges indicate that nanospots preplated in ChemLib 1,536- or 3,456-well plates are best stored at −80°C, in a bag, with or without the outer evaporation wells filled or at −20°C, in a bag, with evaporation wells filled.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/63203/1/adt.2008.169.pd
