    Tweeting back while shouting back: Social media and feminist activism

    Social networks are increasingly significant to the success of feminist activism, campaigning and consciousness raising. Digital spaces including Twitter, YouTube, blogs and Facebook provide a platform for feminists and others to share and address experiences and raise awareness of misogyny, sexism and violence against women. This paper provides a commentary on use of social media for feminists, and explores the role of social media engagement with the wider social movement of feminism, through a consideration of the process of ā€˜shouting backā€™ with a focus on Twitter and hashtags. We will consider why social media can be useful to feminists with reference to existing research, before discussing the impact of two social media based feminist campaigns (#everydaysexism and #AskThicke) and the implications of these for the feminist movement

    Living with ā€˜melanomaā€™ā€¦for a day: a phenomenological analysis of medical studentsā€™ simulated experiences

    Background Despite the rising incidence of melanoma, medical students have progressively fewer opportunities to encounter patients with this important condition. Curricula tend to attach the greatest value to intellectual forms of learning. Compared to intellectual learning, however, experiential learning affords students deep insights about a condition. Doctors who experience ill health are more empathic towards patients. However opportunities to learn about cancer experientially are limited. Temporary transfer tattoos can simulate the ill health associated with melanoma. We reasoned that, if doctors who have been sick are more empathic, temporarily ā€˜havingā€™ melanoma might have a similar effect. Objectives Explore the impact of wearing a melanoma tattoo on medical studentsā€™ understanding of patienthood and attitudes towards patients with melanoma. Methods Ten fourth year medical students were recruited to a simulation. They wore a melanoma tattoo for 24 hours and listened to a patientā€™s account of receiving their diagnosis. Data were captured using audio-diaries and face-to-face interviews, transcribed, and analysed phenomenologically using the template analysis method. Results There were four themes: 1) Melanoma simulation: opening up new experiences; 2) Drawing upon past experiences; 3) A transformative introduction to patienthood; 4) Doctors in the making: seeing cancer patients in a new light. Conclusions By means of a novel simulation, medical students were introduced to lived experiences of having a melanoma. Such an inexpensive simulation can prompt students to reflect critically on the empathetic care of such patients in the future

    High-pressure melt curve of shock-compressed tin measured using pyrometry and reflectance techniques

    We have developed a new technique to measure the melt curve of a shocked metal sample and have used it to measure the high-pressure solid-liquid phase boundary of tin from 10 to 30ā€‰GPa and 1000 to 1800ā€‰K. Tin was shock compressed by plate impact using a single-stage powder gun, and we made accurate, time-resolved radiance, reflectance, and velocimetry measurements at the interface of the tin sample and a lithium fluoride window. From these measurements, we determined temperature and pressure at the interface vs time. We then converted these data to temperature vs pressure curves and plotted them on the tin phase diagram. The tin sample was initially shocked into the high-pressure solid Ī³ phase, and a subsequent release wave originating from the back of the impactor lowered the pressure at the interface along a constant entropy path (release isentrope). When the release isentrope reaches the solid-liquid phase boundary, melt begins and the isentrope follows the phase boundary to low pressure. The onset of melt is identified by a significant change in the slope of the temperature-pressure release isentrope. Following the onset of melt, we obtain a continuous and highly accurate melt curve measurement. The technique allows a measurement along the melt curve with a single radiance and reflectance experiment. The measured temperature data are compared to the published equation of state calculations. Our data agree well with some but not all of the published melt curve calculations, demonstrating that this technique has sufficient accuracy to assess the validity of a given equation of state model

    Tumour angiogenesis is a complex multistep process regulated by a number of angiogenic factors. One such factor, platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor has recently been shown to be thymidine phosphorylase (TP). TP catalyses the reversible phosphorylation of thymidine to deoxyribose-1-phosphate and thymine. Although known to be generally elevated in tumours, the expression of this enzyme in breast carcinomas is unknown. Therefore, we used ribonuclease protection assays and immunohistochemistry to examine the expression of TP in 240 primary breast carcinomas. Nuclear and/or cytoplasmic TP expression was observed in the neoplastic tumour epithelium in 53% of tumours. Immunoreactivity was also often present in the stromal, inflammatory and endothelial cell elements. Although endothelial cell staining was usually focal, immunoreactivity was observed in 61% of tumours and was prominent at the tumour periphery, an area where tumour angiogenesis is most active. Tumour cell TP expression was significantly inversely correlated with grade (P = 0.05) and size (P = 0.003) but no association was observed with other tumour variables. These findings suggest that TP is important for remodelling the existing vasculature early in tumour development, consistent with its chemotactic non-mitogenic properties, and that additional angiogenic factors are more important for other angiogenic processes like endothelial cell proliferation. Relapse-free survival was higher in node-positive patients with elevated TP (P = 0.05) but not in other patient groups. This might be due to the potentiation of chemotherapeutic agents like methotrexate by TP. Therefore, this enzyme might be a prediction marker for response to chemotherapy

    The effect of inelastic processes on tunneling

    We study an electron that interacts with phonons or other linear or nonlinear excitations as it resonantly tunnels. The method we use is based on mapping a many-body problem in a large variational space exactly onto a one-body problem. The method is conceptually simpler than previous Green's function approaches, and allows the essentially exact numerical solution of much more general problems.     MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY Fiber Initiation in 18 Cultivars and Experimental Lines of Three Gossypium Species

    ABSTRACT A new technique was developed to study the cotton fiber initiation process and fiber initial densities. The goal was to provide an additional tool to cotton breeders and geneticists interested in fiber improvement. The objectives were to assess whether fiber initiation patterns reported for some Gossypium hirsutum L. and G. barbadense L. cultivars extend to a more diverse range of cultivars/lines; and to test if there is a relationship between fiber initials density, lint percentage, and fiber characteristics. This study was performed with 17 cultivars and experimental lines of G. hirsutum (upland cotton) and G. barbadense (Pima cotton) and one G. arboreum L. accession. The ovules were extracted from flowers at the day of anthesis and 1 and 2 d thereafter, stained with a fluorescent dye, DiOC 6 (3) (3,3ā€²-dihexyloxacarbocyanine iodide), and observed under a light microscope. Staining cotton fiber initials with DiOC 6 (3) enabled the evaluation of a greater number of samples than the more time-consuming scanning electron microscopy protocols to assess the fiber initiation process. There were significant differences in fiber initial densities among cultivars and lines but these did not cluster into "upland" and "Pima" types as had been expected. Upland and Pima fiber initiation occurred at anthesis, whereas Sea Island Pima initiation was delayed a day. A delay in fiber initiation was also confirmed in fuzzless mutant lines. Fiber initial densities were not found to be useful predictors of lint percentage

    Evaluation of range of motion restriction within the hip joint

    In Total Hip Arthroplasty, determining the impingement free range of motion requirement is a complex task. This is because in the native hip, motion is restricted by both impingement as well as soft tissue restraint. The aim of this study is to determine a range of motion benchmark which can identify motions which are at risk from impingement and those which are constrained due to soft tissue. Two experimental methodologies were used to determine motions which were limited by impingement and those motions which were limited by both impingement and soft tissue restraint. By comparing these two experimental results, motions which were limited by impingement were able to be separated from those motions which were limited by soft tissue restraint. The results show motions in extension as well as flexion combined with adduction are limited by soft tissue restraint. Motions in flexion, flexion combined with abduction and adduction are at risk from osseous impingement. Consequently, these motions represent where the maximum likely damage will occur in femoroacetabular impingement or at most risk of prosthetic impingement in Total Hip Arthroplasty
