Ganglion cysts in the lateral portal region of the knee after arthroscopy: report of two cases

    Get PDF
A ganglion cyst (GC) is a mucinous or gelatinous-filled benign tumor overlying a joint or tendon sheath, which commonly arises in the dorsal and volar wrist side but may occur anywhere in the body. Although cystic lesions around the knee are common, the occurrence of GCs are rare. Ganglia may arise from intra or extra-articular, soft tissue, intraosseous, or periosteal location. Symptoms may vary according to the size and location. After the more frequent performance of magnetic resonance imaging for the assessment of a knee joint, the number of incidental, asymptomatic lesions have been increasingly diagnosed. The etiology of GC remains unclear; however, trauma and a flaw in the joint tissues may explain its appearance. The authors report two cases of women aged 47 years and 37 years who presented pain and swelling in their left knees following arthroscopic partial medial meniscectomy. The former was surgically treated and had a favorable outcome, while the latter had conservative treatment and a gloomy outcom

Grating coupler integrated photodiodes for plasmon resonance based sensing

Cataloged from PDF version of article. In this work, we demonstrate an integrated sensor combining a grating-coupled plasmon resonance surface with a planar photodiode. Plasmon enhanced transmission is employed as a sensitive refractive index (RI) sensing mechanism. Enhanced transmission of light is monitored via the integrated photodiode by tuning the angle of incidence of a collimated beam near the sharp plasmon resonance condition. Slight changes of the effective refractive index (RI) shift the resonance angle, resulting in a change in the photocurrent. Owing to the planar sensing mechanism, the design permits a high areal density of sensing spots. In the design, absence of holes that facilitate resonant transmission of light, allows an easy-to-implement fabrication procedure and relative insensitivity to fabrication errors. Theoretical and experimental results agree well. An equivalent long-term RI noise of 6.3 x 10(-6) RIU/root Hz is obtained by using an 8 mW He-Ne laser, compared to a shot-noise limited theoretical sensitivity of 5.61 x 10(-9) RIU/root Hz. The device features full benefits of grating-coupled plasmon resonance, such as enhancement of sensitivity for non-zero azimuthal angle of incidence. Further sensitivity enhancement using balanced detection and optimal plasmon coupling conditions are discussed

Incidentally discovered thyroid nodules: frequency in an adult population during Doppler ultrasonographic evaluation of cervical vessels

WOS: 000331638200012PubMed ID: 23563922In this study, the frequency of thyroid nodules was searched in a population of consecutive patients undergoing routine cervical Doppler evaluation with the use of high-end color Doppler ultrasound units equipped with new technologies that increase nodule conspicuity. Three hundred and fifteen subjects, who had been referred for Doppler ultrasonography of cervical vessel examination, were enrolled in the study. During the examinations, the presence or absence of thyroid nodules, if present, their number (as "single" or "multiple''), the longest diameter, and internal echo pattern of the largest nodule were noted. As a result, one hundred and sixty-one subjects (51 %) were shown to have at least one thyroid nodule. In this subgroup, 54 cases had single and 107 cases had multiple nodules. Incidental thyroid nodules were detected in similar ratios in both men and women (p = 0.34). The results of the study led to the conclusion that half of the elder adult population had at least one thyroid nodule. Use of ultrasound technologies with increasing resolution seems to help significantly in detecting and also evaluating smaller and previously unknown nodules
