Timing performance of a double layer diamond detector
In order to improve the time precision of detectors based on diamonds sensors we have built a detector with two scCVD layers connected in parallel to the same amplifier. This work describes the design and the first measurements of such a prototype performed on a particle beam at CERN. With this different configuration we have obtained an improvement larger than a factor of 1.6-1.7 for the timing precision of the measurement when compared to a one layer scCVD diamond detector.Peer reviewe
Presence and characterization of zoonotic bacterial pathogens in wild boar hunting dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) in tuscany (italy)
Domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) used for wild boar (Sus scrofa) hunting may represent incidental hosts for several zoonotic pathogens. This investigation aimed to evaluate the presence of anti-Leptospira antibodies and the occurrence, antimicrobial resistance, and virulence of Salmonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, and Listeria monocytogenes in sera and rectal swabs collected from 42 domestic hunting dogs in the Tuscany region (Italy). Regarding Leptospira, 31 out of 42 serum samples (73.8%) were positive and serogroup Pomona was the most detected (71.4%) at titers between 1:100 and 1:400. Four Salmonella isolates (9.52%) were obtained, all belonging to serotype Infantis; two of them showed antimicrobial resistance to streptomycin, while pipB and sopE presence was assessed in all but one isolate. Concerning Yersinia enterocolitica, seven isolates (16.7%) were obtained, six belonging to biotype 1 and one to biotype 4. Resistance to amoxicillin–clavulanic acid, cephalothin, and ampicillin was detected. Biotype 4 presented three of the virulence genes searched (ystA, ystB, inv), while isolates of biotype 1 showed only one gene. No Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from dog rectal swabs. The results suggest that hunting dogs are exposed to different bacterial zoonotic agents, potentially linked to their work activity, and highlight the possible health risks for humans
Test of Ultra Fast Silicon Detectors for the TOTEM upgrade project
This paper describes the performance of a prototype timing detector, based on 50 mu m thick Ultra Fast Silicon Detector, as measured in a beam test using a 180 GeV/c momentum pion beam. The dependence of the time precision on the pixel capacitance and bias voltage is investigated in this paper. A timing precision from 30 ps to 100 ps (RMS), depending on the pixel capacitance, has been measured at a bias voltage of 180 V.Peer reviewe
LHC Optics Measurement with Proton Tracks Detected by the Roman Pots of the TOTEM Experiment
Precise knowledge of the beam optics at the LHC is crucial to fulfil the
physics goals of the TOTEM experiment, where the kinematics of the scattered
protons is reconstructed with the near-beam telescopes -- so-called Roman Pots
(RP). Before being detected, the protons' trajectories are influenced by the
magnetic fields of the accelerator lattice. Thus precise understanding of the
proton transport is of key importance for the experiment. A novel method of
optics evaluation is proposed which exploits kinematical distributions of
elastically scattered protons observed in the RPs. Theoretical predictions, as
well as Monte Carlo studies, show that the residual uncertainty of this optics
estimation method is smaller than 0.25 percent.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 5 figures, to be submitted to New J. Phy
Double diffractive cross-section measurement in the forward region at LHC
The first double diffractive cross-section measurement in the very forward
region has been carried out by the TOTEM experiment at the LHC with
center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. By utilizing the very forward TOTEM
tracking detectors T1 and T2, which extend up to |eta|=6.5, a clean sample of
double diffractive pp events was extracted. From these events, we measured the
cross-section sigma_DD =(116 +- 25) mub for events where both diffractive
systems have 4.7 <|eta|_min < 6.5 .Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, submitted for publicatio
Performance of the TOTEM Detectors at the LHC
The TOTEM Experiment is designed to measure the total proton-proton
cross-section with the luminosity-independent method and to study elastic and
diffractive pp scattering at the LHC. To achieve optimum forward coverage for
charged particles emitted by the pp collisions in the interaction point IP5,
two tracking telescopes, T1 and T2, are installed on each side of the IP in the
pseudorapidity region 3.1 < = |eta | < = 6.5, and special movable beam-pipe
insertions - called Roman Pots (RP) - are placed at distances of +- 147 m and
+- 220 m from IP5. This article describes in detail the working of the TOTEM
detector to produce physics results in the first three years of operation and
data taking at the LHC.Comment: 40 pages, 31 figures, submitted to Int. J. Mod. Phys.
First Results from the TOTEM Experiment
The first physics results from the TOTEM experiment are here reported,
concerning the measurements of the total, differential elastic, elastic and
inelastic pp cross-section at the LHC energy of = 7 TeV, obtained
using the luminosity measurement from CMS. A preliminary measurement of the
forward charged particle distribution is also shown.Comment: Conference Proceeding. MPI@LHC 2010: 2nd International Workshop on

Proton-proton elastic scattering at the LHC energy of {\surd} = 7 TeV
Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at
the CERN Large Hadron Collider at {\surd}s = 7 TeV in dedicated runs with the
Roman Pot detectors placed as close as seven times the transverse beam size
(sbeam) from the outgoing beams. After careful study of the accelerator optics
and the detector alignment, |t|, the square of four-momentum transferred in the
elastic scattering process, has been determined with an uncertainty of d t =
0.1GeV p|t|. In this letter, first results of the differential cross section
are presented covering a |t|-range from 0.36 to 2.5GeV2. The differential
cross-section in the range 0.36 < |t| < 0.47 GeV2 is described by an
exponential with a slope parameter B = (23.6{\pm}0.5stat {\pm}0.4syst)GeV-2,
followed by a significant diffractive minimum at |t| =
(0.53{\pm}0.01stat{\pm}0.01syst)GeV2. For |t|-values larger than ~ 1.5GeV2, the
cross-section exhibits a power law behaviour with an exponent of -7.8_\pm}
0.3stat{\pm}0.1syst. When compared to predictions based on the different
available models, the data show a strong discriminative power despite the small
t-range covered.Comment: 12pages, 5 figures, CERN preprin
Construction and Performance of Large-Area Triple-GEM Prototypes for Future Upgrades of the CMS Forward Muon System
At present, part of the forward RPC muon system of the CMS detector at the
CERN LHC remains uninstrumented in the high-\eta region. An international
collaboration is investigating the possibility of covering the 1.6 < |\eta| <
2.4 region of the muon endcaps with large-area triple-GEM detectors. Given
their good spatial resolution, high rate capability, and radiation hardness,
these micro-pattern gas detectors are an appealing option for simultaneously
enhancing muon tracking and triggering capabilities in a future upgrade of the
CMS detector. A general overview of this feasibility study will be presented.
The design and construction of small (10\times10 cm2) and full-size trapezoidal
(1\times0.5 m2) triple-GEM prototypes will be described. During detector
assembly, different techniques for stretching the GEM foils were tested.
Results from measurements with x-rays and from test beam campaigns at the CERN
SPS will be shown for the small and large prototypes. Preliminary simulation
studies on the expected muon reconstruction and trigger performances of this
proposed upgraded muon system will be reported.Comment: 7 pages, 25 figures, submitted for publication in conference record
