In order to clarify the situations in which international graduate students of scienceand technology at a Japanese university interact with Japanese people in their daily andacademic life, we conducted a survey targeting both international graduate students and theJapanese students who study with them in the same laboratory. The results indicated thatinternational graduate students interact with Japanese students while conducting experimentsin a laboratory setting, participating in seminars, and discussing various topics in order tobuild relationships. Furthermore, findings suggest international graduate students stronglyfeel it is necessary to communicate in Japanese even when English is the primary language ofinstruction for university coursework. They also consider conversation skills to be necessaryfor daily interactions on campus. Based on these findings, we constructed a Japanese languagecourse curriculum specifically for science and technology students which reflects the realsituations in which communication occurs. Further development of the course curriculum andenrichment of teaching material will be necessary in the future

    Early-onset Dementia with Lewy Bodies

The clinical and neuropathological characteristics of an atypical form of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are described. The proband experienced difficulties in her school performance at 13 years of age. Neurological examination revealed cognitive dysfunction, dysarthria, parkinsonism and myoclonus. By age 14 years, the symptoms had worsened markedly and the proband died at age 15 years. On neuropathological examination, the brain was severely atrophic. Numerous intracytoplasmic and intraneuritic Lewy bodies, as well as Lewy neurites, were present throughout the cerebral cortex and subcortical nuclel; vacuolar changes were seen in the upper layers of the neocortex and severe neuronal loss and gliosis were evident in the cerebral cortex and substantia nigra. Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites were strongly immunoreactive for alpha-synuclein and ubiquitin. Lewy bodies were composed of filamentous and granular material and isolated filaments were decorated by alpha-synuclein antibodies. Immunohistochemistry for tau or beta-amyloid yielded negative results. The etiology of this atypical form of DLB is unknown, since there was no family history and since sequencing of the exonic regions of alpha-Synuclein, beta-Synuclein, Synphilin-1, Parkin, Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 and Neurofilament-M failed to reveal a pathogenic mutation. This study provides further evidence of the clinical and pathological heterogeneity of DLB

Effects of gender on language revitalisation & documentation in the Ryukyus

    Get PDF
Ideologies regarding gender roles affect both the researcher, the community’s view of the researcher, and the participants and the way in which they can (or cannot) participate in language revitalization and documentation. This poster will explore the relationship between gender roles and indigenous language revitalization/documentation in the Ryukyuan context

    The Thirty Millimeter Telescope

A near-infrared telescope with an effective aperture diameter of thirty millimeters has been developed. The primary objective of the development is to observe northern bright stars in the JJ, HH, and KsK_{\rm s} bands and provide accurate photometric data on those stars. The second objective is to repeatedly observe a belt-like region along the northern Galactic plane (b5|b| \le 5^\circ and δ30\delta \ge -30^\circ) to monitor bright variable stars there. The telescope has been in use since December 2016. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and operational performances of the telescope, photometric calibration methods, and our scientific goals. We show that the telescope has the ability to provide photometry with an uncertainty of less than 5\% for stars brighter than 7, 6.5, and 6~mag in the JJ, HH, and KsK_{\rm s} bands, respectively. The repeatability of the photometric measurements for the same star is better than 1\% for bright stars. Our observations will provide accurate photometry on bright stars that are lacking in the Two Micron Sky Survey and the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. Repeated observations at a good cadence will also reveal their nature of the variability in the near-infrared.Comment: Accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japa

Epidermal Cyst in the Scrotum Successfully Treated while Preserving the Testis: A Case Report

A 66-year-old male was referred to our hospital for further examination of a scrotal mass. Because of the risk of testicular cancer, we first clamped the vessels as a course of higher orchiectomy. Then, we approached the tumor through the scrotum and successfully resected it while preserving the testis. A histopathological diagnosis revealed an epidermal cyst. We herein report a rare case of an intrascrotal epidermal cyst successfully treated while preserving the testis
