    Subcutaneous Achilles tendon rupture in an eighty-year-old female with an absence of risk factors

    Achilles tendon ruptures rarely occur in patients over 80 years of age. However, it is unclear what treatment, surgical or conservative, is suitable for such an Achilles tendon rupture in the elderly. In addition, the clinical results of an Achilles tendon rupture in the elderly are disappointing. We report here the case of a subcutaneous Achilles tendon rupture in an eighty-year-old, healthy female, who returned to her previous level of activity following surgical treatment. Additional case reports of other instances of successful treatment are needed to help establish the optimal treatment protocol for an Achilles tendon rupture in the elderly

    Detection of the Far-infrared [O III] and Dust Emission in a Galaxy at Redshift 8.312: Early Metal Enrichment in the Heart of the Reionization Era

    We present the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detection of the [O III] 88 μ\mum line and rest-frame 90 μ\mum dust continuum emission in a Y-dropout Lyman break galaxy (LBG), MACS0416_Y1, lying behind the Frontier Field cluster MACS J0416.1-2403. This [O III] detection confirms the LBG with a spectroscopic redshift of z=8.3118±0.0003z = 8.3118 \pm 0.0003, making this object one of the furthest galaxies ever identified spectroscopically. The observed 850 μ\mum flux density of 137±26137 \pm 26 μ\muJy corresponds to a de-lensed total infrared (IR) luminosity of LIR=(1.7±0.3)×1011L⊙L_{\rm IR} = (1.7 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{11} L_{\odot} if assuming a dust temperature of Tdust=50T_{\rm dust} = 50 K and an emissivity index of β=1.5\beta = 1.5, yielding a large dust mass of 4×106M⊙4 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}. The ultraviolet-to-far IR spectral energy distribution modeling where the [O III] emissivity model is incorporated suggests the presence of a young (τage≈4\tau_{\rm age} \approx 4 Myr), star-forming (SFR ≈60M⊙\approx 60 M_{\odot} yr−1^{-1}), moderately metal-polluted (Z≈0.2Z⊙Z \approx 0.2 Z_{\odot}) stellar component with a mass of Mstar=3×108M⊙M_{\rm star} = 3 \times 10^8 M_{\odot}. An analytic dust mass evolution model with a single episode of star-formation does not reproduce the metallicity and dust mass in τage≈4\tau_{\rm age} \approx 4 Myr, suggesting a pre-existing evolved stellar component with Mstar∼3×109M⊙M_{\rm star} \sim 3 \times 10^9 M_{\odot} and τage∼0.3\tau_{\rm age} \sim 0.3 Gyr as the origin of the dust mass.Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 18 pages, 10 figures, 5 table

    EMPRESS. IX. Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies are Very Gas-Rich Dispersion-Dominated Systems: Will JWST Witness Gaseous Turbulent High-z Primordial Galaxies?

    We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities (0.016−0.098 Z⊙0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}) and low stellar masses (104.7−107.6M⊙10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}). Taking deep medium-high resolution (R∼7500R\sim7500) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with Hα\alpha emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed Hα\alpha flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities (vrotv_{\rm rot}) of 5--23 km s−1^{-1} smaller than the velocity dispersions (σ0\sigma_{0}) of 17--31 km s−1^{-1}, indicating dispersion-dominated (vrot/σ0=0.29−0.80<1v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0}=0.29-0.80<1) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of fgas≃0.9−1.0f_{\rm gas}\simeq 0.9-1.0. Comparing our results with other Hα\alpha kinematics studies, we find that vrot/σ0v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0} decreases and fgasf_{\rm gas} increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-zz (z∼7z\sim 7) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at z∼7z\sim 7.Comment: Submitted to ApJ; After revisio

    Trends in hepatocellular carcinoma incident cases in Japan between 1996 and 2019

    We examined the epidemiological trends, including the distribution of sex, age, and disease etiology, in HCC incident cases, over 24 years. Data of 20,547 HCC patients (1996–2019) were analyzed in this prospective study. We divided the study period into four 6-yearly quarters. HCC etiology was categorized as hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, HBV + hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, HCV infection, and both negative (non-BC). The incident cases of HCC per quarter of the study period were 4311 (21.0%), 5505 (26.8%), 5776 (28.1%), and 4955 (24.1%), sequentially. Overall, 14,020 (68.2%) patients were male. The number of HCC cases in patients < 60 years, 60–69 years, 70–79 years, and ≥ 80 years were 3711 (18.1%), 6652 (32.4%), 7448 (36.2%), and 2736 (13.3%), respectively. The average age of newly-diagnosed patients increased in each quarter. HCC was associated with HBV, HBV + HCV, and HCV infections and non-BC in 2997 (14.6%), 187 (0.9%), and 12,019 (58.5%), and 5344 (26.0%) cases, respectively. The number of HCV-associated cases decreased in each quarter, while that of non-BC-associated cases increased.     Genetic variants in antioxidant pathway: Risk factors for hepatotoxicity in tuberculosis patients

    Tuberculosis (TB) treatment can cause serious sequelae including adverse effects such as anti-TB drug-induced hepatotoxicity (ATDH). We performed a candidate gene-based association study between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 10 genes in the antioxidant pathway and ATDH susceptibility. The subjects comprised 100 Japanese patients with pulmonary TB who received a treatment regimen including isoniazid and rifampicin. Out of them, 18 patients had ATDH. Thirty-four tag SNPs in 10 genes were analyzed by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism or PCR-direct DNA sequencing. The frequencies of alleles and genotypes between patients with and without ATDH were compared in three different genetic models. Statistical analyses revealed that a C/C genotype at rs11080344 in NOS2A, a C/C genotype at rs2070401 in BACH1, and a G/A or A/A genotype at rs4720833 in MAFK independently conferred ATDH susceptibility. Remarkably, the association of the latter two tag SNPs with ATDH susceptibility was highly statistically significant (P = 0.0006) with an odds ratio of 9.730. This study is the first report to demonstrate that NOS2A, BACH1, and MAFK appear to be genetic determinants of ATDH in Japanese patients with TB. Furthermore, a combination of BACH1 and MAFK polymorphisms may be useful as new biomarkers to identify high-risk Japanese TB patients for ATDH

    The carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of selected bryozoan skeletons from upper Pleistocene bryozoan mounds in the Great Australian Bight (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 182; Holes 1129C, 1131A, and 1132B) were determined. Cyclostome bryozoans, Idmidronea spp. and Nevianipora sp., have low to intermediate magnesian calcite skeletons (1.5-10.0 and 0.9-6.4 molar percentage [mol%] MgCO3, respectively), but a considerable number include marine cements. The cheilostome Adeonellopsis spp. are biminerallic, principally aragonite, with some high magnesian calcite (HMC) (6.6-12.1 mol% MgCO3). The HMC fraction of Adeonellopsis has lower d13C and similar d18O values compared with the aragonite fraction. Reexamination of modern bryozoan isotopic composition shows that skeletons of Adeonellopsis spp. and Nevianipora sp. form close to oxygen isotopic equilibrium with their ambient water. Therefore, changes in glacial-interglacial oceanographic conditions are preserved in the oxygen isotopic profiles. The bryozoan oxygen isotopic profiles are correlated well with marine isotope Stages 1-8 in Holes 1129C and 1132B and to Stages 1-4(?) in Hole 1131A. The horizons of the bryozoan mounds that yield skeletons with heavier oxygen isotopic values can be correlated with isotope Stages 2, 4(?), 6, and 8 in Hole 1129C; Stages 2 and 4(?) in Hole 1131A; and Stages 2, 4, 6, and 8 in Hole 1132B. These results provide supporting evidence for a model for bryozoan mound formation, in which the mounds were formed during intensified upwelling and increased trophic resources during glacial periods
