Linguistic notes on two funerary steles with the “Euchologion Mega” type of prayer for the dead from Christian Nubia

The aim of this article is to make some observations concerning the use of the Greek language in Christian Nubia, based on the study of two funerary steles inscribed with the ‘Euchologion Mega’, a type of prayer for the dead. The article focuses on five remarks derived from the examination of the aforementioned material. The conclusion drawn underlines the need for a study of the individual variants of the prayer’s formula and pleads for the continuation of similar research.Este artículo busca ofrecer algunas observaciones sobre el uso del griego en la Nubia cristiana, basándose para ello en el estudio de dos estelas funerarias inscritas con el ‘Euchologion Mega’, un tipo de oración para los muertos. El artículo se centra en cinco consideraciones procedentes del examen del mencionado material. La conclusión extraída subraya la necesidad de estudiar las variantes individuales de la fórmula oracional y apuesta por la continuidad de investigaciones en esta línea

The fifth paper in the series brings the focus onto the inscriptions accompanying the famous wall paintings from Christian Nubia, more particularly the legends naming the Four Creatures of the Apocalypse. The identification of a very probable source of inspiration for the particular names used in Nubia turns the attention to the ritual power of such names and the role of orality in the transmission of such textual traditions.El quinto artículo de la serie está centrado en las inscripciones que acompañan a las famosas pinturas murales de la Nubia cristiana, concretamente las leyendas de nombres de las Cuatro Criaturas del Apocalipsis. This article re-opens the discussion about the linguistic situation in the southernmost kingdom of Medieval Sudan, Alwa (or Alodia). The focal point is a graffito from Musawwarat es Sufra, an ancient site that later became part of Alwa. It is an eloquent testimony of the interest of the linguistic situation in this area.Este artículo reabre la discusión sobre la situación lingüística en el reino más meridional del Sudán medieval, Alwa (o Alodia). Miscellanea Epigraphica Nubica III: Epímaco de Attiri: un santo guerrero de la Antigua Nubia cristiana

The third paper of this series shifts focus to a special category of artistic and epigraphic production from the kingdoms of Medieval Nubia, namely the wooden plaques depicting a small variety of figures of the Christian faith. It particularly discusses one of these objects, found at a site called Attiri, which depicts a horseman with his mount spearing a trodden figure. The focal point of this paper is the inscription in the particular language of the Nubians of the Late Christian period that was carved on the back of that object and identifies the represented figure with Saint Epimachos.El tercer artículo de esta serie cambia la atención a una categoría de la producción artística y epigráfica de los reinos de la Nubia medieval, concretamente a las placas de madera que representan una pequeña variedad de figuras de la fe cristiana. Estudia, particularmente, uno de estos objetos, encontrado en un lugar llamado Attiri, que representa a un jinete con su montura alanceando a una figura hollada.
