Anticardiolipin antibodies and coronary heart disease

Arterial or venous thrombotic events have been described as complications in patients with positive anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL), affecting various organs including the heart. In order to see whether aCL could be, among others, a predisposing factor for coronary artery occlusions and whether it could serve as a prognostic marker for coronary heart disease, 232patients enrolled in the European Concerted Action on Thrombosis Angina Pectoris Study were studied. aCL and various other haemostatic parameters were determined at time of admittance in order to see whether a relationship existed between haemostasis at baseline and extent or prognosis of the cardiovascular disease. A follow-up at 12 and 24 months after angiography included information about relapsing coronary or other thrombotic events, treatment and outcome of the disease. aCL were not found to be a marker of either progressive cardiovascular disease or recurrent thrombotic events. No correlation was found, either in aCL positive or in aCL negative patients, between high levels of haemostasis activation markers, such as fi-thromboglobulin, platelet factor 4 or fibrinopeptide A and recurrent cardiovascular diseas

Organoleptic and Quality Characteristics of Malagousia Variety, Grapes Fermented with Selected Indigenous Yeast Strains

Commercial Malagousia varietal wines, which are produced in almost all Greek viticultural zones, representa relatively important part of Greek wine activity. This study presents the results of a profile compilation ofvolatile aroma compounds of Malagousia musts fermented under identical conditions with selected yeaststrains. In total, 62 volatile aroma compounds were identified and separated into their chemical classes(aldehydes, higher alcohols, volatile phenols, terpenes, C13-norisoprenoids, lactones, esters, fatty acids, sulphur compounds, other compounds, and other alcohols). Alcohols and higher alcohols, such as cis-hexen-1-ol and geraniol, terpenes like linalool, esters such as ethyl isovalerate, ketones such us betadamascenone,beta-ionone and zingerone, and fatty acids such as geranic acid and phenylacetaldehyde, were found inall the samples. Among them, linalool and phenylacetaldehyde had the strongest effect on the volatilecompound profile of Malagousia wines. The same wine samples were subjected to sensorial analysis by atrained panel of 10 wine tasters, and a statistical analysis of both analyses presents similarities betweenthe two analysis approaches. It is hoped that the results will contribute to a better understanding of thequality potential of the Malagousia variety so as to evaluate possible differences on the basis of the detectedaroma concentrations

Owning an overweight or underweight body: distinguishing the physical, experienced and virtual body

Our bodies are the most intimately familiar objects we encounter in our perceptual environment. Virtual reality provides a unique method to allow us to experience having a very different body from our own, thereby providing a valuable method to explore the plasticity of body representation. In this paper, we show that women can experience ownership over a whole virtual body that is considerably smaller or larger than their physical body. In order to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying body ownership, we use an embodiment questionnaire, and introduce two new behavioral response measures: an affordance estimation task (indirect measure of body size) and a body size estimation task (direct measure of body size). Interestingly, after viewing the virtual body from first person perspective, both the affordance and the body size estimation tasks indicate a change in the perception of the size of the participant’s experienced body. The change is biased by the size of the virtual body (overweight or underweight). Another novel aspect of our study is that we distinguish between the physical, experienced and virtual bodies, by asking participants to provide affordance and body size estimations for each of the three bodies separately. This methodological point is important for virtual reality experiments investigating body ownership of a virtual body, because it offers a better understanding of which cues (e.g. visual, proprioceptive, memory, or a combination thereof) influence body perception, and whether the impact of these cues can vary between different setups

Dynamics of Nanometer-Scale Foil Targets Irradiated with Relativistically Intense Laser Pulses

In this letter we report on an experimental study of high harmonic radiation generated in nanometer-scale foil targets irradiated under normal incidence. The experiments constitute the first unambiguous observation of odd-numbered relativistic harmonics generated by the v×B\vec{v}\times\vec{B} component of the Lorentz force verifying a long predicted property of solid target harmonics. Simultaneously the observed harmonic spectra allow in-situ extraction of the target density in an experimental scenario which is of utmost interest for applications such as ion acceleration by the radiation pressure of an ultraintense laser.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Understanding mass fluvial erosion along a bank profile: using PEEP technology for quantifying retreat lengths and identifying event timing

This study provides fundamental examination of mass fluvial erosion along a stream bank by identifying event timing, quantifying retreat lengths, and providing ranges of incipient shear stress for hydraulically driven erosion. Mass fluvial erosion is defined here as the detachment of thin soil layers or conglomerates from the bank face under higher hydraulic shear stresses relative to surface fluvial erosion, or the entrainment of individual grains or aggregates under lower hydraulic shear stresses. We explore the relationship between the two regimes in a representative, US Midwestern stream with semi-cohesive bank soils, namely Clear Creek, IA. Photo-Electronic Erosion Pins (PEEPs) provide, for the first time, in situ measurements of mass fluvial erosion retreat lengths during a season. The PEEPs were installed at identical locations where surface fluvial erosion measurements exist for identifying the transition point between the two regimes. This transition is postulated to occur when the applied shear stress surpasses a second threshold, namely the critical shear stress for mass fluvial erosion. We hypothesize that the regimes are intricately related and surface fluvial erosion can facilitate mass fluvial erosion. Selective entrainment of unbound/exposed, mostly silt-sized particles at low shear stresses over sand-sized sediment can armor the bank surface, limiting the removal of the underlying soil. The armoring here is enhanced by cementation from the presence of optimal levels of sand and clay. Select studies show that fluvial erosion strength can increase several-fold when appropriate amounts of sand and clay are mixed and cement together. Hence, soil layers or conglomerates are entrained with higher flows. The critical shear stress for mass fluvial erosion was found to be an order of magnitude higher than that of surface fluvial erosion, and proceeded with higher (approximately 2–4 times) erodibility. The results were well represented by a mechanistic detachment model that captures the two regimes. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
