    The role of contextual constraints and chronic expectancies on behavior categorizations and dispositional inferences

    The authors examined the roles of chronic expectancies and other contextual information in the dispositional inference process within the domain of ability judgments. Prior to viewing a videotaped performance under either cognitive load or no load, participants in Studies 1 and 2 were given additional information designed to constrain their categorizations of the performance. In Study 2, chronic future-event expectancies also were assessed. Analyses revealed that when under cognitive load, participants' ability inferences were assimilated to the constraint information (Studies 1 and 2) and to chronic expectancies (Study 2). Furthermore, Study 2 analyses revealed that these effects were mediated by participants' behavior categorizations. Evidence suggestive of a proceduralized form of correction for task difficulty (Studies 1 and 2) and an effortful, awareness-based correction for the constraint information and for chronic expectancies also was found. Results are examined in light of recent models of the dispositional inference process

    Extension and Density of Root Fillings and Postoperative Apical Radiolucencies in the Veterans Affairs Dental Longitudinal Study

    We evaluated the association between radiographically-assessed extension and density of root canal fillings and post-operative apical radiolucencies (AR) using data from 288 participants in the Veterans Affairs Dental Longitudinal Study. Study subjects were not VA patients; all received their medical and dental care in the private sector. Generalized Estimating Equations were used to account for multiple teeth within subjects and to control for covariates of interest. Defective root filling density was associated with increased odds of post-operative AR among teeth with no pre-operative AR (Odds Ratio=3.0, 95%CI=1.3–7.1), though pre-operative AR was the strongest risk factor for post-operative AR (Odds Ratio=29.2, 95%CI=13.6–63.0 among teeth with ideal density). Compared to well-extended root fillings, neither over- nor under-extended root fillings separately were related to post-operative AR, but when those two categories were collapsed into one “poorly-extended” category, poor extension was related to post-operative AR (Odds Ratio=1.8, 95%CI=1.1–3.2)

    Using Insights from Cognitive Neuroscience to Investigate the Effects of Event-Driven Process Chains on Process Model Comprehension

    Business process models have been adopted by enterprises for more than a decade. Especially for domain experts, the comprehension of process models constitutes a challenging task that needs to be mastered when creating or reading these models. This paper presents the results we obtained from an eye tracking experiment on process model comprehension. In detail, individuals with either no or advanced expertise in process modeling were confronted with models expressed in terms of Event-driven Process Chains (EPCs), reflecting different levels of difficulty. The first results of this experiment confirm recent findings from one of our previous experiments on the reading and comprehension of process models. On one hand, independent from their level of exper-tise, all individuals face similar patterns, when being confronted with process models exceeding a certain level of difficulty. On the other, it appears that process models expressed in terms of EPCs are perceived differently compared to process models specified in the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN). In the end, their generalization needs to be confirmed by additional empirical experiments. The presented expe-riment continues a series of experiments that aim to unravel the factors fostering the comprehension of business process models by using methods and theories stemming from the field of cognitive neuroscience and psychology

    Are diet-specific compensatory health beliefs predictive of dieting intentions and behaviour?

    Compensatory health beliefs (CHBs) - beliefs that an unhealthy behaviour can be compensated for by healthy behaviour - are hypothesised to be activated automatically to help people resolve conflicts between their desires (e.g. eat chocolate) and their long-term goals (e.g. dieting). The aim of the present research was to investigate diet-specific CHBs within the context of a theoretical framework, the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA), to examine the extent to which diet-specific CHBs contribute to dieting intentions and dietary intake. Seventy five dieting women were recruited in Switzerland and England and were asked to complete measures of diet-specific CHBs, risk perception, outcome expectancies, self-efficacy, intention, and behaviour. Path modelling showed that, overall, diet-specific CHBs were not related to dieting intentions (ß = .10) or behaviour (ß = .06) over and above variables specified in the HAPA. However, risk perception moderated the relationship between diet-specific CHBs and intention (ß = .26). Diet-specific CHBs positively predicted intention in women with high risk perception, but not in women with low risk perception. This positive relationship might be explained by the assumption that CHBs play different roles at different stages of the health-behaviour change process. Future studies should further examine moderators and stage-specific differences of the associations between CHBs, intention and health-behaviour change
