Application of automobile emission control technology to light piston aircraft engines
The possibility was evaluated for achieving the EPA Standards for HC and CO emissions through the use of air-fuel ratio enleanment at selected power modes combined with improved air-fuel mixture preparation, and in some cases improved cooling. Air injection was also an effective approach for the reduction of HC and CO, particularly when combined with exhaust heat conservation techniques such as exhaust port liners
Production of magnesium from Great Salt Lake, Utah USA
Magnesium metal has been commercially produced from the waters of Great Salt Lake since 1972. Worldwide use of magnesium has markedly increased over the last twenty years due to its unique properties of low density and high strength. Great Salt Lake is a valuable resource for the recovery of magnesium minerals due to its chemical composition, natural geography/climate and proximity to transportation and markets. US Magnesium LLC and its predecessors have overcome various technical challenges as well as political hurdles, climatic calamities and market uncertainties. This discussion will describe the extensive use of solar evaporation ponds to produce suitable raw materials for magnesium manufacture as well as significant mineral by-products. It will also include a basic technical description of the magnesium metal manufacturing process, an explanation of the operating history of the Rowley Utah plant, and briefly touch on the current commercial uses of magnesium metal
The Risetime of Nearby Type Ia Supernovae
We present calibrated photometric measurements of the earliest detections of
nearby type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The set of ~30 new, unfiltered CCD
observations delineate the early rise behavior of SNe Ia > 18 to 10 days before
maximum. Using simple empirical models, we demonstrate the strong correlation
between the risetime (i.e., the time between explosion and maximum), the
post-rise light-curve shape, and the peak luminosity. Using a variety of
light-curve shape methods, we find the risetime to B maximum for a SN Ia with
Delta m15(B)=1.1 mag and peak M_V=-19.45 mag to be 19.5+/-0.2 days. We find
that the peak brightness of SNe Ia is correlated with their risetime; SNe Ia
which are 0.10 mag brighter at peak in the B-band require 0.80+/-0.05 days
longer to reach maximum light.
We determine the effects of several possible sources of systematic errors,
but none of these significantly impacts the inferred risetime. Constraints on
SN Ia progenitor systems and explosion models are derived from a comparison
between the observed and theoretical predictions of the risetime.Comment: Submitted to the Astronomical Journal, 24 pages, 7 figure
The sexual health needs of looked after young people; findings from qualitative interviews led through public health and health psychology.
Background - Looked after young people (LAYP) have poorer sexual health outcomes than their peers. However, research seldom examines the health needs of, or intervenes with, this group. The aim of the current study was to identify LAYP's perceived sexual health needs and explore sources of sexual health information, knowledge levels, concerns and service preferences.
Methods - Looked after young people within Fife, Scotland, were recruited through their workers and carers to participate in qualitative semi-structured interviews. Those aged 12–19 years were targeted for recruitment. National Health Services ethics approval was granted. Thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo.
Results - Interviews were conducted with 10 LAYP. Key themes included gaps in knowledge, and gaps between knowledge and behaviour. Being ‘looked after’ may have negative consequences on knowledge, sources of support and safer sex. A flexible, one-to-one service, aimed at several lifestyle issues, not solely sexual health, was preferred by respondents.
Conclusion - Looked after young people require support to bridge the gap between knowledge and behaviour and several theories relevant to the findings have been identified. Participants desired more support around a range of health issues, which may come from school, workers and carers, as well as health professionals. Further research examining effective interventions with this group is crucial to improve outcomes
A GBT Survey for HI 21 cm Absorption in the Disks and Halos of Low-Redshift Galaxies
We present an HI 21 cm absorption survey with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT)
of galaxy-quasar pairs selected by combining data from the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (SDSS) and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters
(FIRST) survey. Our sample consists of 23 sightlines through 15 low-redshift
foreground galaxy - background quasar pairs with impact parameters ranging from
1.7 kpc up to 86.7 kpc. We detected one absorber in the GBT survey from the
foreground dwarf galaxy, GQ1042+0747, at an impact parameter of 1.7 kpc and
another possible absorber in our follow-up Very Large Array (VLA) imaging of
the nearby foreground galaxy, UGC 7408. Both of the absorbers are narrow (FWHM
of 3.6 and 4.8 km/s), have sub Damped Lyman alpha column densities, and most
likely originate in the disk gas of the foreground galaxies. We also detected H
I emission from three foreground galaxies, including UGC 7408. Although our
sample contains both blue and red galaxies, the two H I absorbers as well as
the H I emissions are associated with blue galaxies. We discuss the physical
conditions in the 21 cm absorbers and some drawbacks of the large GBT beam for

The Case for an Accelerating Universe from Supernovae
The unexpected faintness of high-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), as
measured by two teams, has been interpreted as evidence that the expansion of
the Universe is accelerating. We review the current challenges to this
interpretation and seek to answer whether the cosmological implications are
compelling. We discuss future observations of SNe Ia which could offer

Reproductive character displacement and potential underlying drivers in a species‐rich and florally diverse lineage of tropical angiosperms (Ruellia; Acanthaceae)
Reproductive character displacement is a pattern whereby sympatric lineages diverge more in reproductive character morphology than allopatric lineages. This pattern has been observed in many plant species, but comparably few have sought to disentangle underlying mechanisms. Here, in a diverse lineage of Neotropical plants (Ruellia; Acanthaceae), we present evidence of reproductive character displacement in a macroevolutionary framework (i.e., among species) and document mechanistic underpinnings. In a series of inter-specific hand pollinations in a controlled glasshouse environment, we found that crosses between species that differed more in overall flower size, particularly in style length, were significantly less likely to produce viable seeds. Further, species pairs that failed to set seed were more likely to have sympatric distributions in nature. Competition for pollinators and reinforcement to avoid costly inter-specific mating could both result in these patterns and are not mutually exclusive processes. Our results add to growing evidence that reproductive character displacement contributes to exceptional floral diversity of angiosperms
