Ending cervical cancer: A call to action.
The outlook for elimination of the scourge of cervical cancer is bright, because we now have the tools to achieve this goal. In recent years human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in high-income countries has resulted in dramatic decreases in HPV infection and associated cervical disease. If all countries with a substantial burden of disease introduce the vaccine nationally, we can protect the vast majority of women and girls most at risk. For women who are beyond the vaccination target age, progress has been made in screening and treatment for cervical precancer, but we must accelerate this momentum to reduce incidence and mortality worldwide to the very low rates found in wealthier countries. Human and financial resources must be increased and directed to programs that follow best practices and reach all women, including the marginalized or disadvantaged. Seven key actions are recommended. Now is the time for action at national, regional, and global levels
Nuclear Shell Model Calculations of Neutralino-Nucleus Cross Sections for Silicon 29 and Germanium 73
We present the results of detailed nuclear shell model calculations of the
spin-dependent elastic cross section for neutralinos scattering from \si29 and
\ge73. The calculations were performed in large model spaces which adequately
describe the configuration mixing in these two nuclei. As tests of the computed
nuclear wave functions, we have calculated several nuclear observables and
compared them with the measured values and found good agreement. In the limit
of zero momentum transfer, we find scattering matrix elements in agreement with
previous estimates for \si29 but significantly different than previous work for
\ge73. A modest quenching, in accord with shell model studies of other heavy
nuclei, has been included to bring agreement between the measured and
calculated values of the magnetic moment for \ge73. Even with this quenching,
the calculated scattering rate is roughly a factor of 2 higher than the best
previous estimates; without quenching, the rate is a factor of 4 higher. This
implies a higher sensitivity for germanium dark matter detectors. We also
investigate the role of finite momentum transfer upon the scattering response
for both nuclei and find that this can significantly change the expected rates.
We close with a brief discussion of the effects of some of the non-nuclear
uncertainties upon the matrix elements.Comment: 31 pages, figures avaiable on request, UCRL-JC-11408

MERBoard User's Guide
An important goal of MERBoard is to allow users to quickly and easily share information. The front-end interface is physically a large plasma computer display with a touch screen, allowing multiple people to interact shoulder-to-shoulder or in a small meeting area. The software system allows people to interactively create digital whiteboards, browse the web, give presentations and connect to personal computers (for example, to run applications not on the MERBoard computer itself). There are four major integrated applications: a browser; a remote connection to another computer (VNC); a digital whiteboard; and a digital space (MERSpace), which is a digital repository for each individual user
Scattering of weakly interacting massive particles from Ge
We use a "hybrid" method, mixing variationally-determined triaxial nuclear
Slater determinants, to calculate the response of Ge73 to hypothetical
dark-matter particles such as neutralinos. The method is a hybrid in that
rotational invariance is approximately restored prior to variation and then
fully restored before the mixing of intrinsic states. We discuss such features
of Ge73 as shape coexistence and triaxiality, and their effects on
spin-dependent neutralino cross sections. Our calculations yield a satisfactory
quadrupole moment and an accurate magnetic moment in this very complicated
nucleus, suggesting that the spin structure and thus the axial--vector response
to dark matter particles is modeled well.Comment: 8 pages in RevTeX 3 plus 2 uuencoded figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Reducing Uncertainties About the Effects of Chemoradiotherapy for Cervical Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Individual Patient Data From 18 Randomized Trials
Background After a 1999 National Cancer Institute (NCI) clinical alert was issued, chemoradiotherapy has become widely used in treating women with cervical cancer. Two subsequent systematic reviews found that interpretation of the benefits was complicated, and some important clinical questions were unanswered. Patients and Methods We initiated a meta-analysis seeking updated individual patient data from all randomized trials to assess the effect of chemoradiotherapy on all outcomes. We prespecified analyses to investigate whether the effect of chemoradiotherapy differed by trial or patient characteristics. Results On the basis of 13 trials that compared chemoradiotherapy versus the same radiotherapy, there was a 6% improvement in 5-year survival with chemoradiotherapy (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.81, P <.001). A larger survival benefit was seen for the two trials in which chemotherapy was administered after chemoradiotherapy. There was a significant survival benefit for both the group of trials that used platinum-based (HR = 0.83, P = .017) and non-platinum-based (HR = 0.77, P <.009) chemoradiotherapy, but no evidence of a difference in the size of the benefit by radiotherapy or chemotherapy dose or scheduling was seen. Chemoradiotherapy also reduced local and distant recurrence and progression and improved disease-free survival. There was a suggestion of a difference in the size of the survival benefit with tumor stage, but not across other patient subgroups. Acute hematologic and GI toxicity was increased with chemoradiotherapy, but data were too sparse for an analysis of late toxicity. Conclusion These results endorse the recommendations of the NCI alert, but also demonstrate their applicability to all women and a benefit of non-platinum-based chemoradiotherapy. Furthermore, although these results suggest an additional benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy, this requires testing in randomized trials

Ohjaustyylin valinta: ulkoa- vai sisältäpäin? : Näyttelijäohjauksen keinot sketsiviihteessä
Pohdin opinnäytetyössäni kahta ohjaustyyliä: ulkoa- ja sisältäpäin. Käsittelen aihetta sketsiviihteen maailmassa ja sieltä nousevien hahmotyyppien avulla: karikatyyrin rinnastan fyysiikkaan ja realistislähtöisen hahmon ajatuksiin.
Lopussa käsittelen mediaosuutena tekemääni lopputyötä sketsisarjan pilottijakso Sirkkeliä, sen hahmoja, ohjausharjoituksia ja kuvauksia sekä esittelen Kaverimetodiksi nimeämäni ohjauksellisen työtavan.I discuss about two ways of directing actors in comedy: outside-in and inside-out. I'm using comedy genre as a frame for the subject. From the world of comedy I will bring two types of charachters: caricature and realism based charachter. Caricature links with physics and realism based character with thoughts.
In the end I will write about my thesis work Sirkkeli as it is a pilot for comedy series. I will explain how its characters, actor trainings and the shootings worked out
