Deer in the headlights: Towards an understanding of how journalism students engage with complex academic research methods modules

Journalism is at a crossroad. The rise of populist governments with accusations of fake news against what has always been considered to be Fourth Estate journalism means journalists face significant challenges to produce compelling, truthful, and accurate news at a time when reality is altered by those who do not agree with what journalists say. The current journalistic climate means journalists must move beyond the lexical meanings of what it means to be a journalist to a more critical one where they have to verify and analyse the news for the audience. One of the key ways in which journalists can respond to significant challenges to practice is by becoming more critically aware practitioners. A significant step in that direction occurs in journalism programmes at the university level where students are required to produce a critically researched dissertation as part of their conditions of earning a degree. However, with journalism being a traditionally vocational programme, challenges arise because students have difficulties drawing correlations between academic research and journalism practice. Our research aims to understand how students engage with academic research method modules. Based on our findings, we argue that students can use interactive learning methods and online resources to help engage with more complex and unfamiliar content

Surface reactions with participation of oxides of molybdenum and tungsten

The kinetics of surface reactions in one-dimensional and radial (two-dimensional) distribution of diffusant MoO3 (WO3) on the surface of the substrate MeO (Me is Cd, Ni, Pb, Mn, Cu) were investigated. A kinetic equation satisfactorily describes the rate of surface reactions in the case of radial distribution of diffusant on the substrate. It’s found that when the radial distribution of diffusant the growth of layer on the substrate surface eventually slows down and stops almost completely, due to the outflow of the diffusant deeps into the substrate. When the one-dimensional distribution of diffusant the surface interaction is not slowed down and does not stop at an arbitrarily large times

Surface reactions with participation of oxides of molybdenum and tungsten: the influence of external factors

This work is a continuation of the article “Surface reactions with participation of oxides of molybdenum and tungsten”, published in the previous issue of the journal. The influence of the electric field and the pressure of oxygen in the gas phase on the rate of surface reactions for the synthesis of molybdates of manganese and copper were investigated. It’s found that for the synthesis reaction of molybdate of copper the nature of the dependency of the rate of synthesis and rate of surface reactions from the external parameters are the same, indicating the crucial contribution of surface diffusion to the reactive mass transfer. For the synthesis reaction of molybdate of manganese the dependences of the rate of synthesis and of rate of surface reactions by external parameters differ, indicating that for this reaction, surface diffusion isn’t the main mechanism of mass transfer

Unitized Curtain Walls Installation and Some Health and Safety Aspects

This paper discusses good practices and industry experience in the safe installation of unitized curtain walls. An overview of the relevant standards and regulations is presented. Sequence of the installation works and health and safety strategies, methods and appropriate equipment are described and analysed. A reference to the project construction program of works some required preconditions for the facade installation to commence and provisions by the main contractor are discussed. The recommendations and guidance for the Health and Safety planning, provided in this paper, are aimed specifically at unitized curtain walls. The analysis of the discussed aspects is aided by project examples mainly from the United Kingdom, where the unitized curtain wall industry is on the rise and considered well developed

Precarious Lives: The Deepening Pathologies of Neoliberalism in French Cinema (1980 to the Present)

   Understood as a politico-epistemological program rather than simply free-market fundamentalism, as a particular production of subjectivity that constitutes individual subjects as ‘human capital’ rather than simply a way of governing economies or states, neoliberalism has led to the profound destruction of social bonds and to the production of economic, social, and political vulnerability and precarity. Precarity – referring to the rise in flexible and precarious forms of labour, the growth of the knowledge economy, the reduction of welfare state provisions, the suppression of unions, and the association of migration with illegality – has become one of the buzz words in studies of neoliberalism’s restructuring of the global economy and of the entire human sensorium. The recent volume Insecurity1 encapsulates the dominant understanding of precarity and precariousness as the default state of life today, the logic governing the present cultural, economic, political, and social life in the West. This article identifies several dominant narrative motifs in French films made between the 1980s and 2020s that take precarity and precaritization as their subject, and draws attention to an important shift in attitudes to work and class struggle, a shift indicative of the deepening pathologies of neoliberalism.&nbsp
