Arquivos e Imagens (Pós) Coloniais: Contribuições Analíticas sobre duas Coleções Fotográficas

This text brings together the genres of ethnographic and documentary photography as a way to problematize how both traditions utilized prevailing discourses of “truth” and “real”, in each given historical period, to give their practices a sense of intelligibility and legitimation. For this purpose, I address the photography collections of Portuguese José Augusto da Cunha Moraes (1855–1933) and Mozambican Ricardo Rangel (1924–2009) in order to shed light on aesthetic and technical conventions incorporated into their photography at the moment of production. My main argument is that a belief in an exterior reality, prone to be fully captured, either for the ends of producing scientific knowledge or denouncing social issues, guided both practices.O objetivo do texto é aproximar os gêneros da fotografia etnográfica e documentária, de modo a problematizar a forma como as duas tradições se utilizaram dos discursos sobre “verdade” e “real” vigentes em cada período para conferir inteligibilidade e legitimidade às respectivas práticas. Para tanto, mobilizam-se os acervos fotográficos do português José Augusto da Cunha Moraes (1855-1933) e do moçambicano Ricardo Rangel (1924-2009), a fim de lançar luz sobre convenções técnicas e estéticas estabelecidas em cada momento e que foram incorporadas nas produções fotográficas dos dois artistas. O argumento é de que a crença numa realidade exterior, passível de ser integralmente capturada, seja para fins de produção de conhecimento científico ou de denúncia social, norteou ambas as práticas

COLONIALISMO E IMAGEM: MEMÓRIA E(M) CONTESTAÇÃO NAS FOTOGRAFIAS DE RICARDO RANGEL

Resumo:O artigo analisa o contexto e as condições de produção e atuação do fotógrafo moçambicano Ricardo Rangel (1924-2009). Para tanto, utilizam-se as reflexões de Achille Mbembe acerca da elaboração da memória dos colonialismos, bem como sua crítica às ideias de escravidão, relações coloniais e apartheid, articulados com as categorias de experiência e narração em Walter Benjamin e de memória política em João Paulo Borges Coelho. Com isso, pretende-se pensar as fotografias de Rangel como fragmentos do passado que, potencialmente, podem lançar luzes sobre o presente conflituoso de Moçambique. Afinal, quais os limites e as possibilidades da obra de Rangel na construção de uma memória outra de Moçambique e na transmissão de conhecimento sobre o colonialismo?Palavras-Chave: Ricardo Rangel. Moçambique. COLONIALISM AND IMAGE: MEMORY AND CONTESTATION IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF RICARDO RANGELAbstract:The paper analyses the context, the production condition and the performance of the Mozambican photographer Ricardo Rangel (1924-2009). By doing so, I mobilize the reflections of Achille Mbembe on mnemonic work of colonialism, as well as its reflection on slavery, colonial relations and apartheid, linked to the theorization on experience and narration developed by Walter Benjamin and on political memory by João Paulo Borges Coelho. With that, I would like to reflect the photographs of Ricardo Rangel as fragments of the past that potentially may shed some lights on the conflictive present in Mozambique. The question that guides the text is: what are the limits and possibilities of Rangel’s work, first in building another memory of Mozambique, and second, in transmitting social knowledge of the colonialism?Keywords: Ricardo Rangel. Restos de passados, fragmentos de histórias: memória, temporalidade e cidade nas fotografias de Ricardo Rangel (1950-1975)

Este ensaio articula três eixos: fotografia, antropologia e história. Tomo como material de análise um conjunto de imagens do fotógrafo moçambicano Ricardo Rangel do período tardo-colonial no país (1950-1975). O objetivo é abordar essas fotografias enquanto uma série que articula memórias e questiona narrativas oficializadas dos períodos colonial e pós-independência. Argumento que a fotografia revela um emaranhado de temporalidades, restos de passados e fragmentos de histórias plurais que se coadunam no presente, tensionando-o. Com essa reflexão, problematizo o olhar fotográfico de Ricardo Rangel a respeito da cidade de Lourenço Marques/Maputo, refletindo sobre sua prática fotográfica, mas também sobre suas condições e contextos de atuação. A partir das imagens, o texto reflete a produção da cidade, abordando narrativas e memórias do tempo colonial e sua atualização no presente.This essay articulates a reflection around three axes: photography, anthropology, and history. To this end, I examine a set of images by Mozambican photographer Ricardo Rangel from the late colonial period in the country (1950-1975). The goal is to analyze these photographs as a series that provoke articulations, questioning narratives and official memories of the colonial and post-independence periods. I argue that photography reveals an entanglement of temporalities, dialectics, remains of the past, fragments of plural histories that are associated in the present, tensioning it. With this reflection, I seek to problematize Ricardo Rangel’s gaze, reflecting both on his photographic practice and on his conditions and contexts of production. The essay also reflects on the production of the city from Rangel’s images and look, as well as problematizing some narratives and memories from colonial times and its actualization in the present

A ética do olhar: alteridade, experiência e mimesis no decálogo de Krzysztof Kieslowski

Propõe-se, aqui, uma reflexão em torno da interface entre cinema e antropologia. Busca-se analisar a especificidade da relação entre cinema e sociedade, pensando que o cinema, assim como a fotografia, possibilita o ressurgimento da “mimesis”, responsável por provocar um “conhecimento sensível” e, com efeito, atualizar a “experiência” (Erfahrung). Considerando o impacto e as inovações técnicas e temáticas da obra O decálogo (1988), de Krzysztof Kieslowski, e entendendo ainda que o cinema provoca experiências, esses conceitos serão utilizados a partir de uma perspectiva antropológica, a fim de analisar de que forma os filmes que compõem a série O decálogo, tanto por meio de sua estrutura formal quanto de sua narrativa, problematizam as relações humanas no mundo contemporâneoWe propose here a reflection on the interface between film and anthropology. Our intention is to analyze the specificity of the relationship between cinema and society, in thinking of film as an art which, like photography, allows for the resurgence of “mimesis”, which in turn is responsible for causing a “sensible knowledge” and thus updating the “experience” (Erfahrung). Association of Phosphorylated Tau Biomarkers With Amyloid Positron Emission Tomography vs Tau Positron Emission Tomography

IMPORTANCE: The recent proliferation of phosphorylated tau (p-tau) biomarkers has raised questions about their preferential association with the hallmark pathologies of Alzheimer disease (AD): amyloid-β plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma p-tau biomarkers preferentially reflect cerebral β-amyloidosis or neurofibrillary tangle aggregation measured with positron emission tomography (PET). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cross-sectional study of 2 observational cohorts: the Translational Biomarkers in Aging and Dementia (TRIAD) study, with data collected between October 2017 and August 2021, and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), with data collected between September 2015 and November 2019. TRIAD was a single-center study, and ADNI was a multicenter study. Two independent subsamples were derived from TRIAD. The first TRIAD subsample comprised individuals assessed with CSF p-tau (p-tau181, p-tau217, p-tau231, p-tau235), [18F]AZD4694 amyloid PET, and [18F]MK6240 tau PET. The second TRIAD subsample included individuals assessed with plasma p-tau (p-tau181, p-tau217, p-tau231), [18F]AZD4694 amyloid PET, and [18F]MK6240 tau PET. An independent cohort from ADNI comprised individuals assessed with CSF p-tau181, [18F]florbetapir PET, and [18F]flortaucipir PET. Participants were included based on the availability of p-tau and PET biomarker assessments collected within 9 months of each other. Exclusion criteria were a history of head trauma or magnetic resonance imaging/PET safety contraindications. No participants who met eligibility criteria were excluded. EXPOSURES: Amyloid PET, tau PET, and CSF and plasma assessments of p-tau measured with single molecule array (Simoa) assay or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Associations between p-tau biomarkers with amyloid PET and tau PET. RESULTS: A total of 609 participants (mean [SD] age, 66.9 [13.6] years; 347 female [57%]; 262 male [43%]) were included in the study. For all 4 phosphorylation sites assessed in CSF, p-tau was significantly more closely associated with amyloid-PET values than tau-PET values (p-tau181 difference, 13%; 95% CI, 3%-22%; P = .006; p-tau217 difference, 11%; 95% CI, 3%-20%; P = .003; p-tau231 difference, 15%; 95% CI, 5%-22%; P < .001; p-tau235 difference, 9%; 95% CI, 1%-19%; P = .02) . These results were replicated with plasma p-tau181 (difference, 11%; 95% CI, 1%-22%; P = .02), p-tau217 (difference, 9%; 95% CI, 1%-19%; P = .02), p-tau231 (difference, 13%; 95% CI, 3%-24%; P = .009), and CSF p-tau181 (difference, 9%; 95% CI, 1%-21%; P = .02) in independent cohorts. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Results of this cross-sectional study of 2 observational cohorts suggest that the p-tau abnormality as an early event in AD pathogenesis was associated with amyloid-β accumulation and highlights the need for careful interpretation of p-tau biomarkers in the context of the amyloid/tau/neurodegeneration, or A/T/(N), framework

Astrocyte reactivity influences amyloid-β effects on tau pathology in preclinical Alzheimer's disease

An unresolved question for the understanding of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathophysiology is why a significant percentage of amyloid-β (Aβ)-positive cognitively unimpaired (CU) individuals do not develop detectable downstream tau pathology and, consequently, clinical deterioration. In vitro evidence suggests that reactive astrocytes unleash Aβ effects in pathological tau phosphorylation. Here, in a biomarker study across three cohorts (n = 1,016), we tested whether astrocyte reactivity modulates the association of Aβ with tau phosphorylation in CU individuals. We found that Aβ was associated with increased plasma phosphorylated tau only in individuals positive for astrocyte reactivity (Ast+). Cross-sectional and longitudinal tau-positron emission tomography analyses revealed an AD-like pattern of tau tangle accumulation as a function of Aβ only in CU Ast+ individuals. Our findings suggest astrocyte reactivity as an important upstream event linking Aβ with initial tau pathology, which may have implications for the biological definition of preclinical AD and for selecting CU individuals for clinical trials
