Determination of resonance locations in NGC 613 from morphological arguments
In this paper, we present BVRI imaging data of NGC 613. We use these data to
determine the corotation radius of the bar, using the photometric phase
crossing method. This method uses the phase angle of the spiral structure in
several wavebands, and looks for a crossing between the blue (B) light and the
redder wavebands (e.g., R or I). For NGC 613, we find two phase crossings, an
outer phase crossing at 136 +/- 8 arcsec and an inner phase crossing at 16 +/-
8 arcsec. We argue that the outer phase crossing is due to the bar corotation
radius, and from the bar length of arcsec we go on to
calculate a relative bar pattern speed of R = 1.5 +/- 0.1, which is consistent
with the results of previous methods described in the literature. For a better
understanding of the inner phase crossing, we have created structure maps in
all four wavebands and a B-R color map. All of our structure maps and our color
map highlight a nuclear ring of star formation at a radius of ~4 arcsec, which
had also been observed recently using ALMA. Furthermore, the radius of our
inner phase crossing appears to be consistent with the size of a nuclear disk
of star formation that has been recently detected and described in the
literature. We therefore suggest that the phase crossing method can be used to
detect the size of nuclear star formation regions as well as the location of
corotation resonances in spiral galaxies.Comment: 8 pages accepted for publication in MNRA
Dynamical Simulations of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245
We present dynamical simulations of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245, two barred
galaxies (types SB(r)b and SB(r)0/a, respectively) with prominent inner rings.
Our goal is to estimate the bar pattern speeds in these galaxies by matching a
sticky-particle simulation to the -band morphology, using near-infrared
-band images to define the gravitational potentials. We compare the
pattern speeds derived by this method with those derived in our previous paper
using the well-known Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method. The inner
rings in these galaxies, which are likely to be resonance features, help to
constrain the dynamical models. We find that both methods give the same pattern
speeds within the errors.Comment: 29 pages, 3 tables, 13 figures. Accepted for publication in The

Jatssoitikosta rumpusetiksi : rumpusetin soitintutkimuksellinen analyysi
Nämä musiikkiliikkeiden julkaisemat esitteet kattavat vuodet 1905 vuoteen 1979. Kuvaston perusteella kuvaan rumpusetin erilaisia tyyppejä soittimen osien yhdistelmien ja niiden laajuuden perusteella. Aikakausien vertailu piirtää esiin soittimen laajan kehityskaaren, jonka aikana rumpusetti on muotoutunut nykyiseen muotoonsa.
Tutkimukseni osoittaa, että ensimmäinen rumpusetin kehityskaaren jakso on määriteltävissä vuosiin 1909-1949. Bassorummun pedaalin patentointi aloittaa ajanjakson, jolloin kehittyivät seuraavat settityypit: kaksiosainen perussetti, kaksiosainen perkussiosetti, konsolisetti ja trap. Yleensä setin kokoonpano oli joko hyvin niukka tai hyvin laaja, mutta laajuus ilmeni lähinnä runsaana perkussiokokoelmana, jossa kaksiosaiseen settiin saattoi liittyä jopa kokonaisia orkesterisoittimia. Toista ajanjaksoa 1950-1969 hallitsee neliosainen rock-setti: bassorumpu, pieni tomtom, iso tomtom ja virveli, symbaali telineineen ja hi-hat. Tämä moderni rumpusetti vakiintui vuoteen 1950 mennessä, jolloin kylkisymbaali ja matala charleston olivat kokonaan kadonneet. Aiemmassa tutkimuskirjallisuudessa modernin rumpusetin on esitetty syntyneen noin vuonna 1940.
Klassisten konserttisoittimien kuvasto vaihtui rock-henkisyyteen lukuisten puurunkoisten tomtomien myötä. Kulttuurisesta näkökulmasta soittimen kehitykseen on vaikuttanut esimerkiksi jazz, rumpalin aseman muutos suhteessa yhtyeen muiden soittimien edustajiin, soittimen kehittyminen solistiseen suuntaan sekä rumpalin aseman muutos välttämättömästä tahdinpitäjästä koko yhtyeen tähdeksi.

The goal of the risk-oriented enforcement of sanctions (ROS) is to reduce the risk of reoffending as well as to strengthen offender’s resources. Thus far, ROS has been evaluated and enhanced in several studies. Now a change measurement is constructed to further enhance the ROS. The aim is to make change in offenders more transparent and traceable. Therefore, environmental and personality aspects are considered. Personality aspects include: potential for change (consisting of ability to change and motivation to change), delinquency-related process variables and stages of change. Potential for change and delinquency-related process variables include the aspects of motivation, knowledge and ability. The stages of change comprise precontemplation, contemplation, action and maintenance. Environmental aspects (such as work life, financial situation and social environment) are measured with the environmental change measurement, which also includes motivation, knowledge and ability. Environmental and personality aspects are both considered to assess the overall manifestation of risk-related traits. While the other personality-based variables only consider delinquency-related aspects, the overall manifestation takes on a more holistic approach. Therefore, the influences of the risk-related patterns of thoughts and actions on everyday situations and environmental aspects are taken into account. Furthermore, limitations are discussed and an outlook is given on an evaluation that will take place in a different study
The Bar Pattern Speed of NGC 1433 Estimated Via Sticky-Particle Simulations
We present detailed numerical simulations of NGC 1433, an intermediate-type
barred spiral showing strong morphological features including a secondary bar,
nuclear ring, inner ring, outer pseudoring, and two striking, detached spiral
arcs known as ``plumes.'' This galaxy is an ideal candidate for recreating the
observed morphology through dynamical models and determining the pattern speed.
We derived a gravitational potential from an -band image of the galaxy and
simulated the behavior of a two-dimensional disk of 100,000 inelastically
colliding gas particles. We find that the closest matching morphology between a
-band image and a simulation occurs with a pattern speed of 0.89 km s
arcsec 5-10%. We also determine that the ratio of corotation
radius to the average published bar radius is 1.7 0.3, with the ambiguity
in the bar radius being the largest contributor to the error.Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astronomical Journal. 34 pages, 13

The Kinematically Measured Pattern Speeds of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245
We have applied the Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method to derive
the bar pattern speed in the SB(r)b galaxy NGC 2523 and the SB(r)0/a galaxy NGC
4245 using the Calcium Triplet absorption lines. These galaxies were selected
because they have strong inner rings which can be used as independent tracers
of the pattern speed. The pattern speed of NGC 2523 is 26.4 6.1 km
s kpc, assuming an inclination of 49.7 and a distance
of 51.0 Mpc. The pattern speed of NGC 4245 is 75.5 31.3 km s
kpc, assuming an inclination of 35.4 and a distance of 12.6
Mpc. The ratio of the corotation radius to the bar radius of NGC 2523 and NGC
4245 is 1.4 0.3 and 1.1 0.5, respectively. These values place the
bright inner rings near and slightly inside the corotation radius, as predicted
by barred galaxy theory. Within the uncertainties, both galaxies are found to
have fast bars that likely indicate dark halos of low central concentration.
The photometric properties, bar strengths, and disk stabilities of both
galaxies are also discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal, 11 figures, 2

Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Star-Forming Regions in Nearby Galaxies: Stellar Populations and Abundance Indicators
We present FUSE spectroscopy and supporting data for star-forming regions in
nearby galaxies, to examine their massive-star content and explore the use of
abundance and population indicators in this spectral range for high-redshift
galaxies. New far-ultraviolet spectra are shown for four bright H II regions in
M33 (NGC 588, 592, 595, and 604), the H II region NGC 5461 in M101, and the
starburst nucleus of NGC 7714, supplemented by the very-low-metallicity galaxy
I Zw 18. In each case, we see strong Milky Way absorption systems from H2, but
intrinsic absorption within each galaxy is weak or undetectable, perhaps
because of the "UV bias" in which reddened stars which lie behind
molecular-rich areas are also heavily reddened. We see striking changes in the
stellar-wind lines from these populations with metallicity, suggesting that C
II, C III, C IV, N II, N III, and P V lines are potential tracers of stellar
metallicity in star-forming galaxies. Three of these relations - involving N
IV, C III, and P V - are nearly linear over the range from O/H=0.05--0.8 solar.
The major difference in continuum shapes among these systems is that the giant
H II complex NGC 604 has a stronger continuum shortward of 950 A than any other
object in this sample. Small-number statistics would likely go in the other
direction; we favor this as the result of a discrete star-forming event ~3 Myr
ago, as suggested by previous studies of its stellar population. (Supported by

On the Link Between Central Black Holes, Bar Dynamics, and Dark Matter Halos in Spiral Galaxies
The discovery of a relationship between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass
and spiral arm pitch angle (P) is evidence that SMBHs are tied to the overall
secular evolution of a galaxy. The discovery of SMBHs in late-type galaxies
with little or no bulge suggests that an underlying correlation between the
dark matter halo concentration and SMBH mass (MBH) exists, rather than between
the bulge mass and MBH. In this paper we measure P using a two-dimensional fast
fourier transform and estimate the bar pattern speeds of 40 barred spiral
galaxies from the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey. The pattern speeds were
derived by estimating the gravitational potentials of our galaxies from Ks-band
images and using them to produce dynamical simulation models. The pattern
speeds allow us to identify those galaxies with low central dark halo
densities, or fast rotating bars, while P provides an estimate of MBH. We find
that a wide range of MBH exists in galaxies with low central dark matter halo
densities, which appears to support other theoretical results. We also find
that galaxies with low central dark halo densities appear to follow more
predictable trends in P versus de Vaucouleurs morphological type (T) and bar
strength versus T than barred galaxies in general. The empirical relationship
between MBH and total gravitational mass of a galaxy (Mtot) allows us to
predict the minimum Mtot that will be observationally measured of our fast bar
galaxies. These predictions will be investigated in a subsequent paper.Comment: 17 pages, 1 table, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
