    Poisson's ratio in cryocrystals under pressure

    We present results of lattice dynamics calculations of Poisson's ratio (PR) for solid hydrogen and rare gas solids (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe) under pressure. Using two complementary approaches - the semi-empirical many-body calculations and the first-principle density-functional theory calculations we found three different types of pressure dependencies of PR. While for solid helium PR monotonically decreases with rising pressure, for Ar, Kr, and Xe it monotonically increases with pressure. For solid hydrogen and Ne the pressure dependencies of PR are non-monotonic displaying rather deep minimums.     Exact spinor-scalar bound states in a QFT with scalar interactions

    We study two-particle systems in a model quantum field theory, in which scalar particles and spinor particles interact via a mediating scalar field. The Lagrangian of the model is reformulated by using covariant Green's functions to solve for the mediating field in terms of the particle fields. This results in a Hamiltonian in which the mediating-field propagator appears directly in the interaction term. It is shown that exact two-particle eigenstates of the Hamiltonian can be determined. The resulting relativistic fermion-boson equation is shown to have Dirac and Klein-Gordon one-particle limits. Analytic solutions for the bound state energy spectrum are obtained for the case of massless mediating fields.Comment: 12 pages, RevTeX, 1 figur

    The computer code DECAY4 is developed to generate initial energy, time and angular distributions of particles emitted in radioactive decays of nuclides and nuclear (atomic) deexcitations.     Development of a Li2MoO4 scintillating bolometer for low background physics

    We present the performance of a 33 g Li2MoO4 crystal working as a scintillating bolometer. The crystal was tested for more than 400 h in a dilution refrigerator installed in the underground laboratory of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). This compound shows promising features in the frame of neutron detection, dark matter search (solar axions) and neutrinoless double-beta decay physics. Low temperature scintillating properties were investigated by means of different alpha, beta/gamma and neutron sources, and for the first time the Light Yield for different types of interacting particle is estimated. The detector shows great ability of tagging fast neutron interactions and high intrinsic radiopurity levels (< 90 \muBq/kg for 238-U and < 110 \muBq/kg for 232-Th).Comment: revised versio

    Heuristic Models of Two-Fermion Relativistic Systems with Field-Type Interaction

    We use the chain of simple heuristic expedients to obtain perturbative and exactly solvable relativistic spectra for a family of two-fermionic bound systems with Coulomb-like interaction. In the case of electromagnetic interaction the spectrum coincides up to the second order in a coupling constant with that following from the quantum electrodynamics. Discrepancy occurs only for S-states which is the well-known difficulty in the bound-state problem. The confinement interaction is considered too.     What can we learn from neutrinoless double beta decay experiments?

    We assess how well next generation neutrinoless double beta decay and normal neutrino beta decay experiments can answer four fundamental questions. 1) If neutrinoless double beta decay searches do not detect a signal, and if the spectrum is known to be inverted hierarchy, can we conclude that neutrinos are Dirac particles? 2) If neutrinoless double beta decay searches are negative and a next generation ordinary beta decay experiment detects the neutrino mass scale, can we conclude that neutrinos are Dirac particles? 3) If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed with a large neutrino mass element, what is the total mass in neutrinos? 4) If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed but next generation beta decay searches for a neutrino mass only set a mass upper limit, can we establish whether the mass hierarchy is normal or inverted? We base our answers on the expected performance of next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments and on simulations of the accuracy of calculations of nuclear matrix elements.Comment: Added reference

    Analysis of solar neutrino induced double beta processes for several nuclei

    We investigate neutrino flux induced double beta transitions in targets built of Cd112, Cd114, Cd116 and O18 isotopes. In addition to known beta^- beta^- channel we consider new beta^- beta^+ and beta^- beta^+ gamma modes of the neutrino induced double beta process. A possibility of detection of the solar neutrinos via the induced double beta transitions of interest is discussed. We note that the beta^- part of the solar neutrino induced beta^- beta^+ process in O18 was already discussed in Ref.     Pulse Shape Analysis and Identification of Multipoint Events in a Large-Volume Proportional Counter in an Experimental Search for 2K Capture Kr-78

    A pulse shape analysis algorithm and a method for suppressing the noise component of signals from a large copper proportional counter in the experiment aimed at searching for 2K capture of Kr-78 are described. These signals correspond to a compound event with different numbers of charge clusters due to from primary ionization is formed by these signals. A technique for separating single- and multipoint events and determining the charge in individual clusters is presented. Using the Daubechies wavelets in multiresolutional signal analysis, it is possible to increase the sensitivity and the resolution in extraction of multipoint events in the detector by a factor of 3-4.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. submitted to Instruments and Experimental Techniques; ISSN 0020/441
