Smectic-C tilt under shear in Smectic-A elastomers
Stenull and Lubensky [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 76}, 011706 (2007)] have argued that
shear strain and tilt of the director relative to the layer normal are coupled
in smectic elastomers and that the imposition of one necessarily leads to the
development of the other. This means, in particular, that a Smectic-A elastomer
subjected to a simple shear will develop Smectic-C-like tilt of the director.
Recently, Kramer and Finkelmann [arXiv:0708.2024, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 78}, 021704
(2008)] performed shear experiments on Smectic-A elastomers using two different
shear geometries. One of the experiments, which implements simple shear,
produces clear evidence for the development of Smectic-C-like tilt. Here, we
generalize a model for smectic elastomers introduced by Adams and Warner [Phys.
Rev. E {\bf 71}, 021708 (2005)] and use it to study the magnitude of
Smectic-C-like tilt under shear for the two geometries investigated by Kramer
and Finkelmann. Using reasonable estimates of model parameters, we estimate the
tilt angle for both geometries, and we compare our estimates to the
experimental results. The other shear geometry is problematic since it
introduces additional in-plane compressions in a sheet-like sample, thus
inducing instabilities that we discuss.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Stretching Semiflexible Polymer Chains: Evidence for the Importance of Excluded Volume Effects from Monte Carlo Simulation
Semiflexible macromolecules in dilute solution under very good solvent
conditions are modeled by self-avoiding walks on the simple cubic lattice
( dimensions) and square lattice ( dimensions), varying chain
stiffness by an energy penalty for chain bending. In the absence
of excluded volume interactions, the persistence length of the
polymers would then simply be with , the bond length being the lattice spacing,
and is the thermal energy. Using Monte Carlo simulations applying the
pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), both and the chain length
are varied over a wide range ), and
also a stretching force is applied to one chain end (fixing the other end
at the origin). In the absence of this force, in a single crossover from
rod-like behavior (for contour lengths less than ) to swollen coils
occurs, invalidating the Kratky-Porod model, while in a double crossover
occurs, from rods to Gaussian coils (as implied by the Kratky-Porod model) and
then to coils that are swollen due to the excluded volume interaction. If the
stretching force is applied, excluded volume interactions matter for the force
versus extension relation irrespective of chain stiffness in , while
theories based on the Kratky-Porod model are found to work in for stiff
chains in an intermediate regime of chain extensions. While for in
this model a persistence length can be estimated from the initial decay of
bond-orientational correlations, it is argued that this is not possible for
more complex wormlike chains (e.g. bottle-brush polymers). Consequences for the

History Memorized and Recalled upon Glass Transition
The memory effect upon glassification is studied in the glass to rubber
transition of vulcanized rubber with the strain as a controlling parameter. A
phenomenological model is proposed taking the history of the temperature and
the strain into account, by which the experimental results are interpreted. The
data and the model demonstrate that the glassy state memorizes the time-course
of strain upon glassification, not as a single parameter but as the history
itself. The data also show that the effect of irreversible deformation in the
glassy state is beyond the scope of the present model.

Synthesis of enantiomerically-pure and racemic benzyl-tethered Ru (II)/TsDPEN complexes by direct arene substitution : further complexes and application
The use of a direct arene-exchange method for the synthesis of benzyl-tethered arene/Ru/TsDPEN complexes for use in asymmetric transfer hydrogenation is reported. A series of complexes tethered through a three-carbon linear chain was also prepared. The arene-exchange approach significantly simplifies the synthetic approach to this class of catalyst and permits the ready formation of modified analogues. The approach also provides a route to racemic catalysts for use in general reductions with either hydrogen or transfer hydrogenatio
Oscillating Fracture in Rubber
We have found an oscillating instability of fast-running cracks in thin
rubber sheets. A well-defined transition from straight to oscillating cracks
occurs as the amount of biaxial strain increases. Measurements of the amplitude
and wavelength of the oscillation near the onset of this instability indicate
that the instability is a Hopf bifurcation
Modelling direct and indirect water requirements of construction
Water consumed directly by the construction industry is known to be of little importance. However, water consumed in the manufacture of goods and services required by construction may be significant in the context of a building\u27s life cycle water requirements and the national water budget. This paper evaluates the significance of water embodied in the construction of individual buildings. To do this, an input-output-based hybrid embodied water analysis was undertaken on 17 Australian non-residential case studies. It was found that there is a considerable amount of water embodied in construction. The highest value was 20.1 kilolitres (kL)/m2 gross floor area (GFA), representing many times the enclosed volume of the building, and many years worth of operational water. The water required by the main construction process is minimal. However, the water embodied in building materials is considerable. These findings suggest that the selection of elements and materials has a great impact on a building\u27s embodied water. This research allows the construction industry to evaluate design and construction in broad environmental terms to select options that might be cost neutral or possibly cost positive while retaining their environmental integrity. Nonlinear Elasticity in Biological Gels
Unlike most synthetic materials, biological materials often stiffen as they
are deformed. This nonlinear elastic response, critical for the physiological
function of some tissues, has been documented since at least the 19th century,
but the molecular structure and the design principles responsible for it are
unknown. Current models for this response require geometrically complex ordered
structures unique to each material. In this Article we show that a much simpler
molecular theory accounts for strain stiffening in a wide range of molecularly
distinct biopolymer gels formed from purified cytoskeletal and extracellular
proteins. This theory shows that systems of semi-flexible chains such as
filamentous proteins arranged in an open crosslinked meshwork invariably
stiffen at low strains without the need for a specific architecture or multiple

Women, men and coronary heart disease: a review of the qualitative literature
Aim. This paper presents a review of the qualitative literature which examines the experiences of patients with coronary heart disease. The paper also assesses whether the experiences of both female and male patients are reflected in the literature and summarizes key themes.
Background. Understanding patients' experiences of their illness is important for coronary heart disease prevention and education. Qualitative methods are particularly suited to eliciting patients' detailed understandings and perceptions of illness. As much previous research has been 'gender neutral', this review pays particular attention to gender.
Methods. Published papers from 60 qualitative studies were identified for the review through searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PREMEDLINE, PsychINFO, Social Sciences Citation Index and Web of Science using keywords related to coronary heart disease.
Findings. Early qualitative studies of patients with coronary heart disease were conducted almost exclusively with men, and tended to generalize from 'male' experience to 'human' experience. By the late 1990s this pattern had changed, with the majority of studies including women and many being conducted with solely female samples. However, many studies that include both male and female coronary heart disease patients still do not have a specific gender focus. Key themes in the literature include interpreting symptoms and seeking help, belief about coronary 'candidates' and relationships with health professionals. The influence of social roles is important: many female patients have difficulties reconciling family responsibilities and medical advice, while male patients worry about being absent from work.
Conclusions. There is a need for studies that compare the experiences of men and women. There is also an urgent need for work that takes masculinity and gender roles into account when exploring the experiences of men with coronary heart disease
The Parkes Observatory Pulsar Data Archive
The Parkes pulsar data archive currently provides access to 144044 data files
obtained from observations carried out at the Parkes observatory since the year
1991. Around 10^5 files are from surveys of the sky, the remainder are
observations of 775 individual pulsars and their corresponding calibration
signals. Survey observations are included from the Parkes 70cm and the
Swinburne Intermediate Latitude surveys. Individual pulsar observations are
included from young pulsar timing projects, the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array and
from the PULSE@Parkes outreach program. The data files and access methods are
compatible with Virtual Observatory protocols. This paper describes the data
currently stored in the archive and presents ways in which these data can be

Elasticity of entangled polymer loops: Olympic gels
In this note we present a scaling theory for the elasticity of olympic gels,
i.e., gels where the elasticity is a consequence of topology only. It is shown
that two deformation regimes exist. The first is the non affine deformation
regime where the free energy scales linear with the deformation. In the large
(affine) deformation regime the free energy is shown to scale as where is the deformation ratio. Thus a highly non
