Overview of the sensitivity of Ge- and Al-doped silicon dioxide optical fibres to ionizing radiation
This paper reviews the thermoluminescence sensitivity of Ge- and Al- doped SiO2 optical fibre subjected to various ionizing radiations. It is found that the Ge- doped SiO2 optical fiber has the thermoluminescence response superior to Al-doped SiO2 optical fibre at certain energy and dose range in alpha, beta, photon and electron irradiation. High thermoluminescence intensity per unit dose goes to photon and electron irradiation than alpha and beta irradiation of lower energy. This probably due to the linear energy transfer that influence the dose deposition in the material as incident ionizing radiation striking the surface of Ge- and Al- doped SiO2 optical fibre. However, both doped SiO2 optical fibres show good linearity at studied dose range. It has been proven by researchers providing great potential as a dose absorbed measuring devices especially in radiotherapy energy and dose rang
Genetic variants in RET and risk of Hirschsprung's disease in Southeastern Chinese: a haplotype-based analysis

Abstract

Background

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a classic oligogenic disorder. Except inactivating mutations of RET, some single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are identified to be associated with the risk of HSCR. This study was conducted to examine the impact of the haplotypes profile of the reported associated SNPs of RET on the risk of HSCR in a Southeastern Chinese population.

Methods

Genotypes of -5G > A (rs10900296), -1A > C (rs10900297), c135G > A (rs1800858), c1296A > G (rs1800860), and c2307T > G (rs1800861) were analyzed in 123 HSCR patients and 168 controls by polymerase chain reaction amplification and direct sequencing. Associations with risk of HSCR were estimated by odds ratio (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) using logistic regression.

Results

We observed a significantly increased risk of HSCR associated with the RET -5AA (OR = 17.75, 95% CI = 7.34-42.92), -1CC (OR = 10.89, 95% CI = 3.13-37.85), 135AA (OR = 13.61, 95% CI = 6.14-30.14), 1296GG (OR = 2.40, 95% CI = 1.38-4.18) or 2307GG (OR = 9.79, 95% CI = 4.28-22.43) respectively. The five SNPs were in strong linkage disequilibrium. The haplotype A-C-A-G-G (OR = 5.06, 95% CI = 1.97-12.99) and diplotype A-C-A-G-G/A-C-A-G-G (OR = 21.08, 95% CI = 5.28-84.09) was also associated with the increased risk of HSCR, indicating a cumulative effect of these SNPs on the susceptibility of HSCR.

Conclusion

These results support the hypothesis that common variations in RET pathway might play an important role in development of HSCR.</p
Evaluation of Spin-Triplet Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4
This review presents a summary and evaluations of the superconducting
properties of the layered ruthenate Sr2RuO4 as they are known in the autumn of
2011. This paper appends the main progress that has been made since the
preceding review by Mackenzie and Maeno was published in 2003. Here, special
focus is placed on the critical evaluation of the spin-triplet, odd-parity
pairing scenario applied to Sr2RuO4. After an introduction to superconductors
with possible odd-parity pairing, accumulated evidence for the pairing symmetry
of Sr2RuO4 is examined. Then, significant recent progress on the theoretical
approaches to the superconducting pairing by Coulomb repulsion is reviewed. A
section is devoted to some experimental properties of Sr2RuO4 that seem to defy
simple explanations in terms of currently available spin-triplet scenario. The
next section deals with some new developments using eutectic boundaries and
micro-crystals, which reveals novel superconducting phenomena related to chiral
edge states, odd-frequency pairing states, and half-fluxoid states. Some of
these properties are intimately connected with the properties as a topological
superconductor. The article concludes with a summary of knowledge emerged from
the study of Sr2RuO4 that are now more widely applied to understand the physics
of other unconventional superconductors, as well as with a brief discussion of
relatively unexplored but promising areas of ongoing and future studies of
Sr2RuO4.Comment: 31 pages, 35 figures, published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. as a review

Measurement of forward charged hadron flow harmonics in peripheral PbPb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the LHCb detector
Flow harmonic coefficients,
v
n
, which are the key to studying the hydrodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions, have been measured in various collision systems and kinematic regions and using various particle species. The study of flow harmonics in a wide pseudorapidity range is particularly valuable to understand the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the QGP. This paper presents the first LHCb results of the second- and the third-order flow harmonic coefficients of charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum in the forward region, corresponding to pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.9, using the data collected from PbPb collisions in 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02
TeV
. The coefficients measured using the two-particle angular correlation analysis method are smaller than the central-pseudorapidity measurements at ALICE and ATLAS from the same collision system but share similar features

Population Problems and Economic Development in Taiwan
Taiwan is attempting to achieve a higher standard of living, good health standards, universal education, and gainful employment for its people. A major barrier to the attainment of these goals is the current rate of population growth. A large population reduces the potential growth rate of the average income and absorbs resources which otherwise could be devoted to capital formation, and thus slows down the pace of economic development in Taiwan. Possible alternatives to industrialization as a solution to these problems of overpopulation are migration and family planning. Migration, because of some political and geographical reasons, does not present a long range solution. Hence, a family planning program is of significant value in solving the population pressure in Taiwan. At the end of this study, some recommendations, which complement family planning as a solution to the population problem, are made to the policy-makers in the hope that they might be implemented and that they might help to accelerate Taiwan’s economic development

Examining the role of depth information in contextual cuing using a virtual reality visual search task
Two experiments examined the role that depth plays in the formation of associations during contextual cuing of visual search. Current associative models make predictions about the spatial constraints placed on learning within two-dimensional procedures, but there exists very little evidence of how these predictions translate to three-dimensional space. A virtual reality procedure was used to project the stimuli in three-dimensions. Experiment 1 established a contextual cuing effect using this procedure, while Experiment 2 examined whether the relative distance between repeated distractors and the target, or the position of the distractors relative to the observer modulated contextual cuing. It was found that the contextual cuing effect was consistent across these different conditions. As a result, there was no evidence to suggest that depth information forms a significant part of the representations that form during contextual cuing. These data are therefore broadly consistent with the mechanisms of current associative models of contextual cuing
Thermoluminescence response of dysprosium doped strontium tetraborate glasses subjected to electron irradiations
The paper presents the thermoluminescence (TL) response of strontium tetraborate glass subjected to electron irradiations at various Dy2O3 concentrations ranging from 0.00 to 1.00mol%. All glass samples exhibited single broad peak with maximum peak temperature positioned at 170-215°C. The optimum TL response was found at Dy2O3 concentration 0.75mol%. This glass showed good linearity and higher sensitivity for 7MeV compared to 6MeV electrons. Analysis of kinetic parameters showed that the glasses demonstrate second order kinetic
