    Best Practices: Promoting Parent-School Relationship To Increase Hispanic Parental Participation in Schools

    The purpose of this research was to find the factors that affect Hispanic parents’ decision to engage in their children’s education, while they attend public schools in the United States. At the same time, I wanted to find model practices and programs that encourage parental engagement and compile this information to create a manual that can be used for professional development and as a reference for parents. I found that most of the researchers used Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s theoretical model of parent engagement as a framework. I used the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s theoretical model to organize the factors that affect Hispanic parents’ decision for participation, and compiled the information in challenges and opportunities to create the educators’ manual. The manual gives helpful and practical examples that can be applied by educators who want to start or increase Hispanic parent engagement in their school

    Controllable chirality-induced geometrical Hall effect in a frustrated highly-correlated metal

    A current of electrons traversing a landscape of localized spins possessing non-coplanar magnetic order gains a geometrical (Berry) phase which can lead to a Hall voltage independent of the spin-orbit coupling within the material--a geometrical Hall effect. We show that the highly-correlated metal UCu5 possesses an unusually large controllable geometrical Hall effect at T<1.2K due to its frustration-induced magnetic order. The magnitude of the Hall response exceeds 20% of the \nu=1 quantum Hall effect per atomic layer, which translates into an effective magnetic field of several hundred Tesla acting on the electrons. The existence of such a large geometric Hall response in UCu5 opens a new field of inquiry into the importance of the role of frustration in highly-correlated electron materials.Comment: article and supplemental informatio

    Extraction kinetics of saponins from quinoa seed (Chenopodium quinoa Willd)

    Quinoa has higher protein content (11-16% m/m) and better amino acid profile than cereals and represents a valuable resource for healthy nutrition. The aim of this work was to study the saponins extraction kinetics during washing of soaked quinoa. The experimental curves of saponins content as a function of time was measured at water temperatures of 20, 40, 60, and 70ºC. A spectrophotometric method was proposed to determine total saponins content, while an unsteady state diffusional model was applied to this extraction problem, assuming strict internal control to the mass transfer rate. As a first analysis, the complete analytical solution for constant diffusion coefficient (Deff) using the initial radius (R0) provided an accurate predicted curve at each temperature. The diffusion coefficients (around 10−10 m2s-1), were correlated with temperature using an Arrhenius-type relationship to obtain an activation energy Ea  of 16.9 kJ mol-1.  The preliminary values of Ea and preexponential factor (D0) thus obtained were used as initial values of a second, more robust fitting where the whole dataset of saponins concentrations as a function of time for all temperatures. The Arrhenius equation was directly inserted into the diffusional solution. The following parameters were obtained: Ea= 17.2 kJ mol-1 and, D0= 3.232×107 m2 s-1, respectively with an overall r2=0.985. Saponins content agreed well with experimental values. As the equation is capable of predicting saponin extraction times for various operating conditions, it can be used within equipment design schemes

    Tibial internal rotation in combined anterior cruciate ligament and high-grade anterolateral ligament injury and its influence on ACL length

    BACKGROUND Assessment of combined anterolateral ligament (ALL) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury remains challenging but of high importance as the ALL is a contributing stabilizer of tibial internal rotation. The effect of preoperative static tibial internal rotation on ACL -length remains unknown. The aim of the study was analyze the effect of tibial internal rotation on ACL length in single-bundle ACL reconstructions and to quantify tibial internal rotation in combined ACL and ALL injuries. METHODS The effect of tibial internal rotation on ACL length was computed in a three-dimensional (3D) model of 10 healthy knees with 5° increments of tibial internal rotation from 0 to 30° resulting in 70 simulations. For each step ACL length was measured. ALL injury severity was graded by a blinded musculoskeletal radiologist in a retrospective analysis of 61 patients who underwent single-bundle ACL reconstruction. Preoperative tibial internal rotation was measured in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and its diagnostic performance was analyzed. RESULTS ACL length linearly increased 0.7 ± 0.1 mm (2.1 ± 0.5% of initial length) per 5° of tibial internal rotation from 0 to 30° in each patient. Seventeen patients (27.9%) had an intact ALL (grade 0), 10 (16.4%) a grade 1, 21 (34.4%) a grade 2 and 13 (21.3%) a grade 3 injury of the ALL. Patients with a combined ACL and ALL injury grade 3 had a median static tibial internal rotation of 8.8° (interquartile range (IQR): 8.3) compared to 5.6° (IQR: 6.6) in patients with an ALL injury (grade 0-2) (p = 0.03). A cut-off > 13.3° of tibial internal rotation predicted a high-grade ALL injury with a specificity of 92%, a sensitivity of 30%; area under the curve (AUC) 0.70 (95% CI: 0.54-0.85) (p = 0.03) and an accuracy of 79%. CONCLUSION ACL length linearly increases with tibial internal rotation from 0 to 30°. A combined ACL and high-grade ALL injury was associated with greater preoperative tibial internal rotation. This potentially contributes to unintentional graft laxity in ACL reconstructed patients, in particular with concomitant high-grade ALL tears. STUDY DESIGN Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3

    DNA methylation testing with S5 for triage of high-risk HPV positive women

    Methylation of host and viral genes is promising for triage of women with high‐risk human papillomavirus infections (hrHPV). Using a population‐based sample of hrHPV positive women with cervical biopsies within 12 months after cervical screening, the clinical value of the S5 methylation classifier (S5), HPV genotyping and cytology were compared as potential triage tests, for outcomes of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 3 or greater (CIN3+), CIN2+ and CIN2, and the area under the curve (AUC) calculated. S5 scores increased with histopathology severity (P (trend) < .001). For CIN3+, the AUC was 0.780 suggesting S5 provides good discrimination between <CIN3 and CIN3+. AUCs were significant for all pairwise comparisons of <CIN2, CIN2 and CIN3+ (P < .001). The positive predictive value (PPV) of HPV16/18 genotyping for women with any abnormal cytology was greater than S5 (25.36% vs 20.87%, P = .005) for CIN3+, while sensitivity was substantially greater for S5 (83.33% vs 59.28%, P < .001). Restricting to women with abnormal cytology, but excluding those with high‐grade cytology, both S5 and HPV16/18 provided CIN3+ PPVs high enough to recommend colposcopy. Triage with S5 also appeared useful for hrHPV positive women negative for HPV16/18 (CIN3+ PPV: 7.33%, sensitivity: 57.52%). S5 provided increased sensitivity for CIN3+ compared to HPV16/18 genotyping for hrHPV positive women, overall and when restricted to women with abnormal cytology, suggesting S5 may improve colposcopy referral. S5 also has the ability to distinguish between <CIN2, CIN2 and CIN3+, a finding of importance for managing CIN2, given the complexity and uncertainty associated with this diagnosis

    Negative Interpretation Bias Connects to Real-World Daily Affect: A Multistudy Approach

    Negative interpretation bias, the tendency to appraise ambiguous stimuli as threatening, shapes our emotional lives. Various laboratory tasks, which differ in stimuli features and task procedures, can quantify negative interpretation bias. However, it is unknown whether these tasks globally predict individual differences in real-world negative (NA) and positive (PA) affect. Across two studies, we tested whether different lab-based negative interpretation bias tasks predict daily NA and PA, measured via mobile phone across months. To quantify negative interpretation bias, Study 1 (N = 69) used a verbal, self-referential task whereas Study 2 (N = 110) used a perceptual, emotional image task with faces and scenes. Across tasks, negative interpretation bias was linked to heightened daily NA. However, only negative interpretation bias in response to ambiguous faces was related to decreased daily PA. These results illustrate the ecological validity of negative interpretation bias tasks and highlight converging and unique relationships between distinct tasks and naturalistic emotion

Lo que llevó a definir el desarrollo cognitivo a través de la danza y la música en educación inicial; fue involucrar a los dicentes y docente como base para ver las necesidades que se presentan, en este criterio cabe mencionar que los niños trabajan la danza a través de la observación, adoptando pasos y movimientos de la persona que está al frente para que los niños puedan adquirir un buen aprendizaje y así su proceso de desarrollo sea óptimo; mediante el apoyo e involucramiento en su educación, del mismo modo siendo el primer estimulador y guía de su enseñanza.Por lo tanto, la importancia de esta investigación incide en que es esencial y fundamental la práctica de danza y música en educación inicial y hace énfasis en el papel que deben jugar el docente como guías del conocimiento y aprendizaje de los niños.     A hybrid digital parenting programme delivered within the Malaysian preschool system: protocol for a feasibility study of a small scale cluster randomised factorial trial

    Background: Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, and in particular target 4.2, to ensure that all children have access to quality early childhood development, care and preprimary education so that they are ready for primary education, is far from being attained. COVID-19 further compromised progress by disrupting early education, reducing access to wellbeing resources, and increasing family violence. Evidence from low- and middle-income countries suggests in-person parenting interventions are effective at improving child learning and preventing violence. Scaling-up these programmes, however, is challenged because of resource constraints. Integrating digital and human-delivered intervention components is one potential solution to addressing these challenges. There is a need to understand the feasibility and the effectiveness of such interventions in low resource settings including Malaysia. Objectives: This study aims to determine the feasibility and the effectiveness of a digital parenting programme (Naungan Kasih) delivered with varying combinations of two components included to encourage engagement in Malaysia. The study is framed around the following objectives 1) to determine the recruitment, retention, and engagement rates in each intervention conditions; 2) to document implementation fidelity; 3) to explore programme acceptability among key stakeholders; 4) to estimate the costs of the intervention; and 5) to provide preliminary indications of the effectiveness of the different components. Methods: This ten week factorial cluster randomised trial compares ParentText, a chatbotled intervention that delivers parenting and violence prevention content to caregivers of preschool aged children, in combination with two engagement components 1) a WhatsApp support group, and 2) either one or two in-person sessions. The trial aims to recruit 160 primary and 160 secondary caregivers of children (aged between four and six years) from eight schools split equally across two states in Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan. Primary outcomes relate to the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention and its components, including recruitment, retention and engagement. Effectiveness outcomes include caregiver parenting practices, mental health and relationship quality, and child developmental and behavioural outcomes. The evaluation involves mixed methods research utilising quantitative surveys among caregivers, digitally tracked engagement data of caregivers’ usage of the digital intervention components, direct assessments of children, and focus group discussions with caregivers and key stakeholders of the preschool system. Results: Recruitment took place in December 2023. 208 parents were recruited at baseline: 151 primary caregivers, and 57 secondary caregivers. In January 2024, 168 parents enrolled in the programme. Results will be reported in the second half of 2024. Conclusions: This is the first factorial randomised trial to assess the feasibility of a hybrid human-digital playful parenting programme in Southeast Asia. The results of this study will inform a large-scale optimisation trial to establish the most effective, cost-effective, and scalable version of the intervention in Malaysia.
