A GPU-based Evolution Strategy for Optic Disk Detection in Retinal Images

    Get PDF
Parallel processing using graphic processing units (GPUs) has attracted much research interest in recent years. Parallel computation can be applied to evolution strategy (ES) for processing individuals in a population, but evolutionary strategies are time consuming to solve large computational problems or complex fitness functions. In this paper we describe the implementation of an improved ES for optic disk detection in retinal images using the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) environment. In the experimental results we show that the computational time for optic disk detection task has a speedup factor of 5x and 7x compared to an implementation on a mainstream CPU

Oceanographic sensors are accurate and reliable but very expensive. We have developed and calibrated a cheap temperature sensor with a good cost/ accuracy ratio.Peer Reviewe

Anomalies in the cognitive-executive functions in patients with chiari malformation type I

Robot-Beacon Distributed Range-Only SLAM for Resource-Constrained Operation

    Get PDF
This work deals with robot-sensor network cooperation where sensor nodes (beacons) are used as landmarks for Range-Only (RO) Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Most existing RO-SLAM techniques consider beacons as passive devices disregarding the sensing, computational and communication capabilities with which they are actually endowed. SLAM is a resource-demanding task. Besides the technological constraints of the robot and beacons, many applications impose further resource consumption limitations. This paper presents a scalable distributed RO-SLAM scheme for resource-constrained operation. It is capable of exploiting robot-beacon cooperation in order to improve SLAM accuracy while meeting a given resource consumption bound expressed as the maximum number of measurements that are integrated in SLAM per iteration. The proposed scheme combines a Sparse Extended Information Filter (SEIF) SLAM method, in which each beacon gathers and integrates robot-beacon and inter-beacon measurements, and a distributed information-driven measurement allocation tool that dynamically selects the measurements that are integrated in SLAM, balancing uncertainty improvement and resource consumption. The scheme adopts a robot-beacon distributed approach in which each beacon participates in the selection, gathering and integration in SLAM of robot-beacon and inter-beacon measurements, resulting in significant estimation accuracies, resource-consumption efficiency and scalability. It has been integrated in an octorotor Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and evaluated in 3D SLAM outdoor experiments. The experimental results obtained show its performance and robustness and evidence its advantages over existing methodsMinisterio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes DPI2014-59383-C2-1-

Plausible explanation of the Δ5/2+(2000)\Delta_{5/2^{+}}(2000) puzzle

From a Faddeev calculation for the π(Δρ)N5/2(1675)\pi-(\Delta\rho)_{N_{5/2^{-}}(1675)} system we show the plausible existence of three dynamically generated I(JP)=3/2(5/2+)I(J^{P})=3/2 (5/2^{+}) baryon states below 2.3 GeV whereas only two resonances, Δ5/2+(1905)()\Delta_{5/2^{+}}(1905)(\ast\ast\ast\ast) and Δ5/2+(2000)(),\Delta_{5/2^{+}}(2000)(\ast\ast), are cataloged in the Particle Data Book Review. Our results give theoretical support to data analyses extracting two distinctive resonances, Δ5/2+(1740)\Delta_{5/2^{+}}(\sim1740) and Δ5/2+(2200),\Delta_{5/2^{+}}(\sim2200), from which the mass of Δ5/2+(2000)()\Delta_{5/2^{+}}(2000)(\ast\ast) is estimated. We propose that these two resonances should be cataloged instead of Δ5/2+(2000).\Delta_{5/2^{+}}(2000). This proposal gets further support from the possible assignment of the other baryon states found in the approach in the I=1/2,3/2I=1/2,3/2 with JP=1/2+,3/2+,5/2+J^{P}=1/2^{+},3/2^{+},5/2^+ sectors to known baryonic resonances. In particular, Δ1/2+(1750)()\Delta_{1/2^{+}}(1750)(\ast) is naturally interpreted as a πN1/2(1650)\pi N_{1/2^{-}}(1650) bound state.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
