Bott vanishing using GIT and quantization

A smooth projective variety $Y$ is said to satisfy Bott vanishing if $\Omega_Y^j\otimes L$ has no higher cohomology for every $j$ and every ample line bundle $L$. Few examples are known to satisfy this property. Among them are toric varieties, as well as the quintic del Pezzo surface, recently shown by Totaro. Here we present a new class of varieties satisfying Bott vanishing, namely stable GIT quotients of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ by the action of $PGL_2$, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For this, we use the work done by Halpern-Leistner on the derived category of a GIT quotient, and his version of the quantization theorem. We also see that, using similar techniques, we can recover Bott vanishing for the toric case.Comment: submitted versio

Análisis de la política medioambiental contra el cambio climático del presidente Obama en los Estados Unidos

El cambio climático representa uno de los problemas más complicados a los que se enfrenta la humanidad. A pesar de ser un fenómeno natural, la rapidez con la que está ocurriendo se deriva de la actividad humana, que durante décadas se ha dedicado al consumo de recursos no renovables, así como la deforestación, y con ello, la contaminación del planeta. Estados Unidos es uno de los mayores consumidores de combustibles fósiles y por ello es importante identificar los factores claves que determinan las políticas del gobierno frente al cambio climático. El cambio climático ocupó un lugar central dentro del gobierno de Obama; allí se desplegaron varias iniciativas medioambientales que respondieron a la amenaza global y local. Empero, estas iniciativas generaron posturas opuestas por parte de grupos económicos y políticos. Se analizará el discurso de los involucrados, políticas ambientales de anteriores gobiernos, información documental de diferentes actores del Estado, entre otros.Climate change represents one of the most complicated problems that humanity faces. Although this phenomenon is natural, the speed at which it is currently occurring is derived from human activity, which for decades has been dedicated to the consumption of non-renewable resources as well as deforestation, and thus, planet contamination. United States’ case is one of the most relevant examples of fossil fuel use, and it is therefore important to identify the key factors that determine their response. Climate change was one of the main topics in President Obama’s administration; for that reason, a series of environmental initiatives were launched to respond to an identified global and local threat. However, these initiatives generated opposing positions from economic and political groups. 'El Niño' Effects and Biomass Endogeneity in a Harvest Function: The Chilean Jack Mackerel Fishery

The main goal of this paper consists in estimating the input parameters of an annual harvest function for the Chilean jack mackerel stock; particularly, the effects of biomass on catch. One of the main problems faced is that the biomass variable is possibly endogenous, which would bias the estimators if the problem remains unsolved. Our empirical strategy consists in estimating a per vessel harvest function using panel data, which allows us to control for vessels' unobserved heterogeneity, and episodes of 'El Niño' phenomenon as valid instrumental variable for biomass, which allows us to control for the potential biomass endogeneity. This strategy produces consistent estimates of the biomass coefficient. The results, using a panel of industrial vessels operating in the central-southern region of Chile during the period 1985-2002, show that the endogeneity of the biomass variable biases upwardly the magnitude of its coefficient in a Cobb-Douglas harvest function. In the case of our data, the endogeneity bias even changes the sign of the catch-to-biomass elasticity. A first contribution of the paper is to address the endogeneity of biomass in a harvest function, an issue often underestimated in the empirical literature. A second contribution is related to 'El Niño' effects on the Chilean jack mackerel stock. The results show that an oceanic 'El Niño' episode not only has negative contemporaneous effects on jack mackerel biomass but also negative biomass effects lasting for at least two additional years.El Niño phenomenon; pelagic fisheries; Chilean jack mackerel; Instrumental variable estimation; marginal stock effects; endogenous biomass

Resistance to Botulinum Toxin in Aesthetics

Botulinum toxins are widely used worldwide for the treatment of medical and esthetic disorders. They are considered the gold standard for the treatment of muscular spasticity and facial dynamic wrinkles. Moreover, they are a valid alternative in the treatment of pain and hyperhidrosis. Several adverse events to their applications have been described, being the most frequent hematomas, migraines, palpebral ptosis, ectropion, or lack of response. Resistance to botulinum toxins in the medical field has been described, at higher dosages and short intervals. Nevertheless, resistance to botulinum toxin in esthetics has been considered traditionally anecdotic. Recent evidence suggests that resistance to botulinum toxins in esthetics may have higher prevalence than expected. A full analysis of the argument is given with up dated information regarding botulinum toxin resistance in medical and esthetic arenas; including elements for suspicion and diagnosis, valid alternatives for effective prevention, education and treatment of this misdiagnosed condition

A review on density functional theory and GW approximation

Density functional theory and the GW approximation are computational methods used to obtain properties of solids without the need of solving Schrödinger’s equation. While attempts to obtain the energy of atoms with the density function were proposed in 1927, the formalization of the theory came in the 60s with the Hohenberg-Kohn theorems, which gave way to LDA, GGA and Meta-GGA functionals. This document has the purpose to establish the leadership characteristics that must assume the founder of a family business to develop a succession plan. A qualitative research shows the different leadership styles of the founder and the most feasible to establish a succession plan in emerging markets. Additionally, this document presents three Ecuadorian Companies studied cases to find the best leadership style for this kind of market: a case of company that presents an effective leadership succession plan, a case of a company that presented a negative leadership, and a case of a company close to the succession process.El presente trabajo de investigación, tiene como principal objetivo establecer las características de liderazgo que debe asumir el fundador de una empresa familiar para formular un plan de sucesión. Mediante una investigación cualitativa, se evidenciará los diferentes estilos de liderazgo del fundador y cuáles son los más adecuados para el establecimiento de un plan de sucesión en mercados emergentes. ¿Es posible encontrar en la obra de Spinoza, leída por una larga tradición como una filosofía sub specie aeternitatis, un modo de comprender la memoria y el olvido, que les restituya un espesor filosófico y político? En estas notas, nos proponemos indagar en algunas entradas de la obra de Spinoza (y de Maquiavelo, de quien Spinoza es el más agudo lector moderno), a partir de las cuales es posible iniciar un trabajo de reconstrucción en torno al lugar que ocupan en su obra los conceptos de memoria y olvido, presentes en la cuestión de la lengua, e inscriptos en una ontología materialista, realista y democrática

A Machiavellian moment in Arendt? Republicanism and revolution

Nos proponemos analizar la lectura que Arendt realiza de Maquiavelo entre fines de los 1950 y mediados de los 1960, bajo la hipótesis de que en sus continuidades y desplazamientos pueden encontrarse algunas claves para comprender el complejo y problemático vínculo, que emerge más allá de ciertas similitudes estructurales, entre la autora y la recuperación de la llamada “tradición republicana”. Al final, proponemos una aproximación a lo que podría reconocerse como un “momento maquiaveliano” en el interior de la permanencia en Arendt del interrogante por la fundación de la institución política.The aim of this paper is to analize Arendt´s reading of Machiavelli between the late fifties and the mid-sixties, according to the hypothesis that in its continuities and shifts some keys can be found to understand the complex and problematic relationship, which emerges beyond certain structural similarities, between Arendt and the recovery of the so called “republican tradition”.
