Frequency dynamics of gain-switched injection-locked semiconductor lasers
The frequency dynamics of gain-switched singlemode semiconductor lasers subject to optical injection is investigated. The requirements for low time jitter and reduced frequency chirp operation are studied as a function of the frequency mismatch between the master and slave lasers. Suppression of the power overshoot, typical during gain-switched operation, can be achieved for selected frequency detunings
Statistics of transverse mode turn-on dynamics in VCSEL's
The turn-on process of a multimode VCSEL is investigated from a statistical point of view. Special attention is paid to quantities such as time jitter and bit error rate. The single-mode performance of VCSEL¿s during current modulation is compared to that of edge-emitting lasers
Generator of ultrashort optical pulses for time division multiplexing
The performance of a device based on modified injection-locking techniques is studied by means of numerical simulations. The device incorporates master and slave configurations, each one with a DFB laser and an electroabsortion modulator (EAM). This arrangement allows the generation of high peak power, narrow optical pulses according to a periodic or pseudorandom bit stream provided by a current signal generator. The device is able to considerably increase the modulation bandwidth of free-running gain-switched semiconductor lasers using multiplexing in the time domain. Opportunities for integration in small packages or single chips are discussed

Dynamics of sweeping through an instability: Passage-time statistics for colored noise
A calculation of passage-time statistics is reported for the laser switch-on problem, under the influence of colored noise, when the net gain is continuously swept from below to above threshold. Cases of fast and slow sweeping are considered. In the weak-noise limit, asymptotic results are given for small and large correlation times of the noise. The mean first passage time increases with the correlation time of the noise. This effect is more important for fast sweeping than for slow sweeping

Fréedericksz transition in a periodic magnetic field
We study the Fréedericksz transition in a twist geometry under the effect of a periodic modulation of the magnitude of the applied magnetic field. We find a shift of the effective instability point and a time-periodic state with anomalously large orientational fluctuations. This time-periodic state occurs below threshold and it is accompanied by a dynamically stabilized spatial pattern. Beyond the instability the emergence of a transient pattern can be significantly delayed by a fast modulation, allowing the observation of pattern selection by slowing down the reorientational dynamics
