Falling support for the European Parliament, not the economic crisis, has led to a decline in support for the EU in Spain and Portugal.
In April, a major Eurobarometer study reported that there had been a decline in support for the European Union across Europe, especially in countries where the Eurozone crisis’ effects had been most severe. Mariano Torcal takes a closer look at the reasons behind falling support for the EU in Spain and Portugal. Using panel data, he finds that a significant fall in trust levels for the European Parliament, rather than a sense of the EU’s responsibility for the economic crisis, has led to the drop in support for the EU. He also warns that this decline in support is unlikely to be reversed if the economic situation in Europe improves
R. Feynman (1918-1988), one of the greatest physicists of the XX century, Nobel Prize (1965), when asked whether he understood quantum mechanics, he responded simply: "It works". The question of course refers to the significance of the theory, to its understanding and to all that the theory could tell us about the physical reality of our world: a legitimate question since man can think. The desire to understand how the world is done, the very motor of science, goes together with questions as how the world is and what the world is, questions that go straight into the dough abandoned Natural Philosophy. Quantum mechanics, by its enigmatic contents (if analyzed from the philosophical paradigm of classical physics) raises to the philosophical debate the need to come back again to Natural Philosophy in order to understand, unless of course someone does not have enough by saying that “it works”. Surprises arrive when, if thinking from the perspective of Natural Philosophy, one discovers that there are not so many enigmas.
The use of tools by hominins - the primate group which includes humans (Homo) and chimpanzees and bonobos (Pan) - has been extensively researched by archaeologists and primatologists, both of who manifest the relevance of tool-use in understanding technology and the origins of human behaviour. However, recent research has highlighted the need to include other species such as gorillas and orangutans, as well as other extinct primate groups prior to hominins, in order to situate the full evolution of human behaviour within a greater biological context for the first time in history. With this aim, an international group of researchers from different universities, among them Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), proposes to create a new interdisciplinary field called primate archaeology. The new field is described in detail in "Nature"
The Centre for the Studies of Archaeological and Prehistoric Heritage of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (CEPAP-UAB) offers a new model of scientific dissemination based on the "work in process" concept at two dig sites in Lleida: Cova Gran (Les Avellanes-Santa Linya) and Roca dels Bous (Sant Llorenç de Montgai). This dynamic approach offers visitors not only the chance to see the site, but also to discover the work of archaeologists in charge of the excavations, making it easier to communicate the progress and discoveries made on the life of our ancestors
Web d’intercanvis
instituciones de representaciĂłnIn this article we present the results of an on-line survey experimental design to measure
social trust in Spain. This methodology has allowed us to differentiate between general
social trust (anonymous) and the social trust which radius is politically conditioned.
We have shown that politically conditioned trust has a negative impact on the aggregate
levels of social trust, but only for those political conflicts that has been more divisive in the
Spanish political arena: the partisan conflict PP and PSOE, and the national/territorial
conflict. Therefore, the increasing political polarization taking place in Spain about these
two conflicts are affecting negatively to the general levels of social trust, and also indirectly
to the general levels of institutional trus
Responsiveness, Performance and Corruption: Reasons for the Decline of Political Trust
We test the importance of responsiveness, performance and corruption to explain the evolution of political trust in Spain between 1997 and 2019. To this end, the study analyses two longitudinal datasets, namely, a repeated cross-sectional dataset from the Spanish samples of Eurobarometer and an individual-level panel survey conducted during a period of economic recovery in 2015. The study finds that perceptions about political corruption and responsiveness matter greatly in shaping political trust and to a lesser extent economic performance. Although the Great Recession is likely responsible for the sharp decline in trust towards political parties and the parliament between 2008 and 2012, the analysis suggests that trust in representative institutions remains low even after the Recession because of a series of devastating corruption incidents and a perceived lack of responsiveness of the political system. On the other hand, the study finds indications that trust in the judicial system might have been mainly affected by perceptions of corruption
Optimisation of the Dielectrophoretic Well System for Cell-Based Assays.
Dielectrophoresis (DEP), the induced motion of cells in an inhomogeneous electric field, can be measured by studying the motion of the cells at different frequencies. This work uses a light absorption method to determine the DEP force and extract the dielectric properties of cell populations. Previously, light intensity changes in a 3D well electrode have been measured with a microscope and a single channel signal generator. This work sets out to enable real time measurement of cell populations by implementing a digital camera, lens and light source alongside a 20 channel signal generator in one machine, the DEP well instrument, to measure light intensity changes for 20 wells simultaneously. Optimisation of the optics is carried out through the evaluation of different cameras, lenses and light sources and measuring the light intensity changes of yeast populations in 4 wells that are energized with the same frequency, in order to ensure that the system is able to give consistent results. Finally, the application of the DEP well instrument for detection of drug cytotoxicity and rapid detection of apoptosis, both important in the development of new chemotherapeutic drugs, was studied. Both apoptosis and cytotoxicity of drugs can be characterized by changes in the membrane and cytoplasm properties of cells resulting in various distinct sub-populations within a sample. Rapid detection of apoptosis was examined by inducing HeLa cells with the well known chemotherapeutic agent staurosporine and comparing the results obtained with DEP and those obtained with the gold standard method of measuring apoptosis, Annexin V assay with flow cytometry. The ability of the DEP well instrument to test drug cytotoxicity on suspension and adherent cells was studied by inducing cells with the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin and measuring cell viability with DEP after different incubation times. The results were compared with the colorimetric assay 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) and trypan blue experimental results, as well as with previously published values
