Associations between tree spacing and features of native grassland grown in silvopastoral systems in Pampa biome.
The current study assessed the association of eucalyptus-tree spacing with forest growth and yield, as well as with the floristic composition, diversity and yield of natural grassland grown in silvopastoral systems in Pampa biome. Data were collected in six family cattle- ranching area in Bagé County (RS). The effect of two different genetic materials (seminal-origin Eucalyptus dunnii plant and one Eucalyptus grandis clone) on shading features of plants grown in 3 planting-spacing dimensions (625, 312 and 208 trees ha-1) was assessed, as well as their association with herbaceous extract (bare soil; green cover; forage dry matter; floristic composition; species richness; and grass, legumes and winter - and summer-growth species rates) and forestry (litter accumulation, diameter at breast height, total height and volume per hectare) variables. Planting carried out at the highest tree density (625 trees ha-1) has increased forest yield. However, it reduced green cover, herbaceous extract dry-matter yield and species richness, mainly in grasses and legumes with greater forage potential. Conversely, it is possible combining forestry and animal yield to the preservation of native forage species at low tree densities (204 to 312 trees ha-1)

Measuring the Spin of Spiral Galaxies
We compute the angular momentum, the spin parameter and the related
distribution function for Dark Matter halos hosting a spiral galaxy. We base on
scaling laws, inferred from observations, that link the properties of the
galaxy to those of the host halo; we further assume that the Dark Matter has
the same total specific angular momentum of the baryons. Our main results are:
(i) we find that the gas component of the disk significantly contributes to the
total angular momentum of the system; (ii) by adopting for the Dark Matter the
observationally supported Burkert profile, we compute the total angular
momentum of the disk and its correlation with the rotation velocity; (iii) we
find that the distribution function of the spin parameter peaks at a
value of about 0.03, consistent with a no-major-merger scenario for the late

Repeatability of fruits and seeds production and selection of Brazil nut genotypes in native populations in Roraima.
This study estimates the repeatability coefficients of two production traits in two native populations of Brazil nut trees. It determines the number of years of suitable evaluations for an efficient selection process, determines the permanent phenotypic correlation between production traits and also the selection of promising trees in these populations. Populations, located in the Itã region (ITA) and in the in the Cujubim region (CUJ), are both belonging to the municipality of Caracaraí, state of Roraima - Brazil, and consist of 85 and 51 adult trees, respectively. Each tree was evaluated regarding the number of fruits per plant (NFP) and fresh seed weight per plant (SWP), for eight (ITA) and five consecutive years (CUJ). Statistical analyses were performed according to the mixed model methodology, using Software Selegen-REML/BLUP (RESENDE, 2007). The repeatability coefficients were low for NFP (0.3145 and 0.3269 for ITA and CUJ, respectively) and also for SWP (0.2957 and 0.3436 for ITA and CUJ, respectively). It on average takes nine evaluation years to reach coefficients of determination higher than 80%. Permanent phenotypic correlation values higher than 0.95 were obtained for NFP and SWP in both populations. Although trees with a high number of fruits and seed weight were identified, more evaluation years are needed to perform the selection process more efficiently
Numerical and structural aberrations in advanced neuroblastoma tumours by CGH analysis; survival correlates with chromosome 17 status
Rapid tumour progression in neuroblastoma is associated with MYCN amplification, deletion of the short arm of chromosome 1 and gain of 17q. However, patients with advanced disease without MYCN amplification and/or 1p deletion have a very poor outcome too, which suggests other genetic defects may predict an unfavourable prognosis. We employed CGH to study 22 tumours of patients at stages 3 and 4 over one year of age (6 and 16 cases respectively). Patients were divided in groups (A) long-term survivors and (B) short-term survivors. CGH showed a total of 226 chromosome imbalances (110 in group A and 116 in group B). The neuroblastoma cells of long-term survivors showed a preponderance of numerical aberrations (54%vs 43%); particularly gains of entire chromosomes 1 (P< 0.03), 7 (P< 0.04) and 19 (P< 0.05). An extra copy of 17 was detected in 6/8 (75%) samples of group A and only 1/14 (7%) samples of group B (P< 0.002). Conversely, tumours of patients who died from disease progression displayed a higher frequency of structural abnormalities (43%vs 35%), including loss of 1p, 9p, 11q, 15q and 18q and gain of 12q, although the difference was not significant (P= 0.24). Unbalanced gain of 17q was detected in 8/14 (57%) tumours of group B and only 1/8 (13%) tumours of group A (P< 0.05). The peculiar genetic difference observed in the tumours of long and short-term survivors may have prognostic relevance. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Inhibition of Bromodomain and Extraterminal Domain (BET) Proteins by JQ1 Unravels a Novel Epigenetic Modulation to Control Lipid Homeostasis
The homeostatic control of lipid metabolism is essential for many fundamental physiological processes. A deep understanding of its regulatory mechanisms is pivotal to unravel prospective physiopathological factors and to identify novel molecular targets that could be employed to design promising therapies in the management of lipid disorders. Here, we investigated the role of bromodomain and extraterminal domain (BET) proteins in the regulation of lipid metabolism. To reach this aim, we used a loss-of-function approach by treating HepG2 cells with JQ1, a powerful and selective BET inhibitor. The main results demonstrated that BET inhibition by JQ1 efficiently decreases intracellular lipid content, determining a significant modulation of proteins involved in lipid biosynthesis, uptake and intracellular trafficking. Importantly, the capability of BET inhibition to slow down cell proliferation is dependent on the modulation of cholesterol metabolism. Taken together, these data highlight a novel epigenetic mechanism involved in the regulation of lipid homeostasis

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: the intrinsic shape of kinematically selected galaxies
Using the stellar kinematic maps and ancillary imaging data from the Sydney
AAO Multi Integral field (SAMI) Galaxy Survey, the intrinsic shape of
kinematically-selected samples of galaxies is inferred. We implement an
efficient and optimised algorithm to fit the intrinsic shape of galaxies using
an established method to simultaneously invert the distributions of apparent
ellipticities and kinematic misalignments. The algorithm output compares
favourably with previous studies of the intrinsic shape of galaxies based on
imaging alone and our re-analysis of the ATLAS3D data. Our results indicate
that most galaxies are oblate axisymmetric. We show empirically that the
intrinsic shape of galaxies varies as a function of their rotational support as
measured by the "spin" parameter proxy Lambda_Re. In particular, low spin
systems have a higher occurrence of triaxiality, while high spin systems are
more intrinsically flattened and axisymmetric. The intrinsic shape of galaxies
is linked to their formation and merger histories. Galaxies with high spin
values have intrinsic shapes consistent with dissipational minor mergers, while
the intrinsic shape of low-spin systems is consistent with dissipationless
multi-merger assembly histories. This range in assembly histories inferred from
intrinsic shapes is broadly consistent with expectations from cosmological
