Solitary myofibroma of the mandible in an adult with magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography findings: a case report

Myofibroma is a benign tumor composed of myoid spindle cells. The prevalence of myofibroma in the oral cavity is very low, with the mandible being the most common site. This report describes an adult case of myofibroma that arose on the mandible and includes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) findings. On the MRI T1-weighted images, the tumor appeared with signal iso-intensity and was highly and heterogeneously enhanced with contrast material. On the T2-weighted images, it appeared with increased signal intensity. (18) F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET imaging showed abnormal strong accumulation of FDG in the left mandibular region. The tumor was removed by marginal resection of the left mandible under general anesthesia. Histopathological findings revealed that the tumor stroma contained abundant thin-walled vessels. The postoperative course was uneventful, and we found no evidence of recurrence at the postoperative 34-month follow-up

We have investigated the elastic properties of the Ce-based filled skutterudite antimonides CeRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} and CeOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} by means of ultrasonic measurements. CeRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} shows a slight increase around 130 K in the temperature dependence of the elastic constants CC11_{11}, (CC11_{11}-CC12_{12})/2 and CC44_{44}. No apparent softening toward low temperature due to a quadrupolar response of the 4ff-electronic ground state of the Ce ion was observed at low temperatures. In contrast CeOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} shows a pronounced elastic softening toward low temperature in the longitudinal CC11_{11} as a function of temperature (TT) below about 15 K, while a slight elastic softening was observed in the transverse CC44_{44} below about 1.5 K. Furthermore, CeOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} shows a steep decrease around a phase transition temperature of 0.9 K in both CC11_{11} andC C44_{44}. The elastic softening observed in CC11_{11} below about 15 K cannot be explained reasonably only by the crystalline electric field effect. It is most likely to be responsible for the coupling between the elastic strain and the quasiparticle band with a small energy gap in the vicinity of Fermi level. The elastic properties and the 4ff ground state of Ce ions in CeRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} and CeOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} are discussed from the viewpoint of the crystalline electric field effect and the band structure in the vicinity of Fermi level.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, regular pape

Abstract

Background

The choice of surgical treatments for unicompartmental osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is still somewhat controversial. Midterm results from cases treated using unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) or open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) were evaluated retrospectively.

Methods

Twenty-seven knees of 24 patients with varus deformities underwent OWHTO and 30 knees of 18 patients underwent UKA surgeries for the treatment of medial compartmental osteoarthritis (OA). The KSS score, FTA, range of motion and complications were evaluated before and after surgery.

Results

The preoperative mean KSS scores were 49 points in the OWHTO group and 62 in the UKA group which improved postoperatively to 89 (excellent; 19 knees, good; 8 knees), and 88 (excellent; 25, good; 4, fair; 1), respectively. There was no significant difference between the OWHTO and UKA scores. Seventeen patients in the OWHTO group could sit comfortably in the formal Japanese style after surgery. The preoperative mean FTA values for the OWHTO and UKA groups were 182 degrees and 184, and at follow-up measured 169 and 170, respectively. In the UKA group, the femoral component and the polyethylene insertion in one patient was exchanged at 5 years post-surgery and revision TKAs were performed in 2 cases. In the OWHTO group, one tibial plateau fracture and one subcutaneous tissue infection were noted.

Conclusions

Treatment options should be carefully considered for each OA patient in accordance with their activity levels, grade of advanced OA, age, and range of motion of the knee. OWHTO shows an improved indication for active patients with a good range of motion of the knee.</p

Formation of Zwitterionic Fullerodendron Using a New DBN-Focal Dendron

A new poly(amidoamine) dendron having 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-ene (DBN) at the focal point was synthesized. Interestingly, formation of zwitterionic fullerodendrons (λmax = 930 nm for C60 and 795 nm for C70) were observed by Vis-NIR spectroscopy upon the reaction of C60 or C70 with the DBN-focal dendron. In particular, the C70 anion was effectively stabilized by the site isolation effect of the dendritic wedge. The half-life of fullerodendron 12b having C70 anion at the focal point reaches 7,345 min, which is 20 times longer than that of complex between C60 and pristine DBN. Furthermore, in order to confirm the structure of the zwitterionic complex, fullerodendron 12a was reprecipitated from benzonitrile/1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and was observed using IR spectroscopy and APPI-MS

Sclerostin is upregulated in the early stage of chondrogenic differentiation, but not required in endochondral ossification in vitro.

Sclerostin is a potent inhibitor of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway. Wnt signaling pathways have multiple roles in the regulation of cartilage development, growth, and maintenance. This study focused on the role of sclerostin in the process of chondrogenic differentiation. We hypothesized that sclerostin is essential to induce chondrogenic differentiation and regulate endochondral ossification. ATDC5 cells were used to investigate chondrogenic differentiation and terminal calcification. During chondrogenic differentiation, intrinsic sclerostin was upregulated in the early stage, but downregulated in the late stage. Addition of sclerostin elevated expressions of Sox9 and Col2a1 (P<0.05) and reduced expressions of Runx2, Col10a1, MMP-3, MMP-13, and ADAMTS5 (P<0.05) through inhibition of the Wnt-β-catenin signaling pathway (P<0.05). Terminal calcification was significantly inhibited by sclerostin (P<0.05). In contrast, deletion of sclerostin decreased expressions of Sox9 and Col2a1 (P<0.05), increased expressions of Runx2, Col10a1, MMP-3, and MMP-13 (P<0.05), and promoted terminal calcification (P<0.05). This study provides insights into the possible role of sclerostin in the regulation of chondrogenic differentiation. Sclerostin is upregulated in the early stage of chondrogenic differentiation, but is not required in endochondral ossification. Sclerostin is a candidate modulator for chondrogenic differentiation
