    Empiricism and the Rising Incidence of Coauthorship in Law

    The recent growth of empirical scholarship in law, which some have termed empirical legal studies, has received much attention. A less-noticed implication of this trend is its potential impact on the manner of scholarly production in legal academia. A common prediction is that academic collaboration rises with scholarly specialization. As the complexity of a field grows, more human capital and more diverse types of human capital are needed to make a contribution. This Article presents two tests of whether empiricism has spurred more coauthorship in law. First, the Article shows that the fraction of articles in the top fifteen law reviews that were empirical or coauthored (or both) trended upwards between 2000 and 2010. The increase in empirical articles accounted for a substantial share of the growth in coauthored articles, and the correlation between coauthorship and empiricism persisted after controlling for numerous other influences. Second, the Article examines the articles published since 1989 in two prominent, faculty-edited journals specializing in law and economics: the Journal of Legal Studies and the Journal of Law, Economics and Organization. Coauthored articles were far more common in these journals than in the general interest, student-edited law reviews-a pattern which itself is consistent with the specialization hypothesis. The share of articles without empirical analysis or formal models in these journals plummeted over this period, while coauthorship rose sharply. These results support the view that specialization, and specifically the growth of empirical scholarship, has contributed to the trend of coauthorship in legal academia

    Heterogeneity of Frailty Trajectories and Associated Factors in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936

    INTRODUCTION: Recent research suggests that the experience of frailty progression may be heterogeneous, with latent subpopulations of older adults following distinct trajectories of frailty. We aimed to investigate this notion and determine whether certain factors are associated with the membership of these subpopulations. METHODS: Data from 5 data waves collected over 12 years in participants of the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936, aged 70 at baseline, were used to derive the frailty index (FI) (NW1 = 1,091, NW5 = 431). These were used in latent class mixed modelling to estimate subpopulations of frailty trajectories. RESULTS: A quadratic latent class mixed model found 3 distinct groupings, which followed a low (61%, n = 632), medium (36%, n = 368), or high (3%, n = 28) FI trajectory. Each grouping had different intercepts and slopes, with the high grouping following the steepest trajectory indicating a rapid increase in frailty. Findings showed that in general, those in the low grouping were younger, had higher education, higher age 11 cognitive ability, and were from a higher social class than those in the medium and high groupings. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate heterogeneity in frailty trajectories over 12 years in individuals aged 70 years at baseline. Membership of higher frailty trajectory groupings was associated with lower social class, less education, and lower childhood cognitive ability, indicating the potential for future interventions to target individuals who are at the greatest risk of belonging to the high frailty trajectory. Future research is required to continue this line of inquiry by exploring other risk and protective factors, and importantly, to assess whether it is possible to realign an individual's membership to a less detrimental grouping of frailty trajectory

    “True fan = watch match”? In Search of the ‘Authentic’ Soccer Fan.

    Academics have created typologies to divide association football (soccer) fans into categories based upon the assumed ‘authenticity’ of their fandom practices. One of the main requirements of ‘authentic’ fandom has been assumed to be match attendance. The goal of this paper was to critically assess this assumption through considering how fans themselves talk about the significance of match attendance as evidence of ‘authentic’ fandom. In light of the fact that the voices of English non-league fans on the ‘authenticity’ debate have so far been overshadowed by the overbearing focus of much previous research on the upper echelons of English soccer, an e-survey was conducted with 151 members of an online community of fans of English Northern League (NL) clubs (a semi-professional / amateur league based in North East England). Findings revealed that opinion was divided on the constituents of ‘authentic’ fandom and match attendance was not deemed to be the core evidence of support for a club by 42% of the sample. Elias (1978) suggested that dichotomous thinking hinders sociological understanding and it is concluded that fan typologies are not sufficient for assessing the ‘authenticity’ of fan activities

    InAs/Ga(1-x)In(x)Sb superlattices for infrared detector applications

    The successful growth of InAs/Ga(1-x)In(x)Sb superlattices and their optical and structural characterization is discussed. Samples were grown by molecular beam epitaxy at fairly low substrate temperatures (less than 400 C). Structural quality was assessed by reflection high energy electron difrraction, transmission electron microscopy, and x ray diffraction. Excellent structures were achieved for growth on thick, strain relaxed GaSb buffer layers on GaAs substrates, despite a residual threading dislocation density of 10(exp 9)cm(exp -2) originating at the GaSb/GaAs interface. Despite a lattice mismatch of 1.7 percent, InAs/Ga(0.75)In(0.25)Sb superlattices are observed to be free of misfit dislocations at the thicknesses examined here, owing to the close lattice match between the superlattice and GaSb, which evenly distributes compressive and tensile stresses between the InAs and Ga(0.75)In(0.25)Sb layers. Photoluminescence and photoconductivity measurements indicate that the energy gaps of the strain-layer superlattices are smaller than those of InAs/GaSb superlattices with the same layer thicknesses, and are in agreement with the theoretical predictions of Smith and Mailhiot. Energy gaps of 80 to 250 meV (15 to 5 microns) have been measured for InAs/Ga(0.75)In(0.25)Sb superlattices with 45 to 25 A/25 A layer thickness. Results demonstrate that far-infrared cutoff wavelengths are compatible with the thin superlattice layers required for strong optical absorption in type-II superlattices

    The neural correlates of emotion regulation by implementation intentions

    Several studies have investigated the neural basis of effortful emotion regulation (ER) but the neural basis of automatic ER has been less comprehensively explored. The present study investigated the neural basis of automatic ER supported by ‘implementation intentions’. 40 healthy participants underwent fMRI while viewing emotion-eliciting images and used either a previously-taught effortful ER strategy, in the form of a goal intention (e.g., try to take a detached perspective), or a more automatic ER strategy, in the form of an implementation intention (e.g., “If I see something disgusting, then I will think these are just pixels on the screen!”), to regulate their emotional response. Whereas goal intention ER strategies were associated with activation of brain areas previously reported to be involved in effortful ER (including dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), ER strategies based on an implementation intention strategy were associated with activation of right inferior frontal gyrus and ventro-parietal cortex, which may reflect the attentional control processes automatically captured by the cue for action contained within the implementation intention. Goal intentions were also associated with less effective modulation of left amygdala, supporting the increased efficacy of ER under implementation intention instructions, which showed coupling of orbitofrontal cortex and amygdala. The findings support previous behavioural studies in suggesting that forming an implementation intention enables people to enact goal-directed responses with less effort and more efficiency
