Assessment of the nutritional value of selected wild food plants in TĂŒrkiye and their promotion for improved nutrition

    Get PDF
TĂŒrkiye represents one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, containing over 11,000 species of plants, with an estimated 10% being edible. Wild food plants, especially in rural areas, are collected and eaten or sold in local markets, complementing people’s diets, and represent a source of additional income for foraging households. Yet, the use of wild food plants is declining, with both their dietary and cultural values being undermined. Wild food plants can be used as a healthy dietary alternative to imported and ultra-processed foods, particularly as the Turkish population increasingly suffers from diet-related diseases. Using a unique and innovative approach to mainstream biodiversity for food and nutrition, wild food plants from five different regions of TĂŒrkiye were analyzed to determine their nutrient composition, and to evaluate their contribution not only to diets and nutrition, but to promoting a more sustainable food system. Examples are presented of how the approach was put into practice and how action was taken to (i) strengthen the evidence of the nutritional value of wild food plants; (ii) use this knowledge to shape new policies and identify emerging markets for food biodiversity; and, (iii) improve awareness of consumers, using capacity building and farmer training, gastronomy, and cultural events

Background: Mental illness has a significant impact on society and is expected to be the greatest challenge for public health and emergency healthcare services.   Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe how patients with mental illness experience the care they receive from emergency healthcare services.  Method: The method used in the study was a literature review using data collected from the Cinahl, PsychInfo, and PubMed databases. Scientific articles published between 2016 and 2022 were included and analyzed using integrated content analysis.  Results: A total of 15 articles were included, and the main category describes how patients want to be understood and seen as human beings. The subcategories were having good communication, different experiences of stigmatization, considering privacy, and providing hope for change. Patients experienced good care and a positive care relationship when there was effective communication. Various attitudes, predominantly negative attitudes from the patients' perspective, were observed. Patients felt that their privacy was respected, and the care encounter improved when healthcare professionals showed engagement and motivation, which gave them hope for future healthcare situations and increased trust in the healthcare system.  Conclusion: The study's conclusion emphasizes the urgent need to increase knowledge in order to address and understand patients with mental illness within emergency healthcare services. To meet the growing challenge of mental illness, a focus on continuous research and education in the field is required. It is also important to promote close collaboration among different healthcare providers and improve access to psychiatric care and resources. Additional measures should focus on reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness, promoting community awareness, and investing in psychiatric expertise and preventive measures to maintain mental well-being

Predicting academically at-risk engineering students: A soft computing application

    No full text
This paper presents a study on predicting academically at-risk engineering students at the early stage of their education. For this purpose, some soft computing tools namely support vectors machines and artificial neural networks have been employed. The study population included all students enrolled in Pamukkale University, Faculty of Engineering at 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic years as freshmen. The data are retrieved from various institutions and questionnaires conducted on the students. Each input data point is of 38-dimension, which includes demographic and academic information about the students, while the output based on the first-year GPA of the students falls into either at-risk or not. The results of the study have shown that either support vector machine or artificial neural network methods can be used to predict first-year performance of a student in a priori manner. Thus, a proper course load and graduation schedule can be transcribed for the student to manage their graduation in a way that potential dropout risks are reduced. Moreover, an input sensitivity analysis has been conducted to determine the importance of each input used in the study

IS THE OCCURRENCE OF GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS IN PREGNANCIES HIGHER FOLLOWING IN VITRO FERTILIZATION TREATMENT? WHY? A RETROSPECTIVE COHORT STUDY

    No full text
Purpose: This study aim to determine the occurrence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) inpregnancies after IVF treatment and to evaluate the factors that reduce this risk.Material and Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using the medical records ofpregnant women who conceived following IVF at the in-vitro fertilization center between 2002–2019. Thedata were obtained from medical records and phone interviews. Univariate and multivariate logisticregression analyses were performed. Results: The incidence of GDM was found to be 16.7%. The regression model indicated that the riskof GDM was 4.57 times higher in the age group 36–40 at conception during the IVF cycle than the agegroup 31–35 (95% CI = 1.18–17.73, p = .028). Furthermore, women who conceived after the secondIVF trial had a risk of GDM 3.464 times higher than those that conceived after their first IVF trial (95%CI = 1.07–11.23, p= .038).Conclusion: As age and number of IVF trials increase in infertile women, the risk of GDM increases afterIVF treatment. Keywords: Gestational diabetes mellitus, in vitro fertilization, risk factors</p
