Experiencing the progress report: an analysis of gender and administration in doctoral candidature

    Get PDF
Most universities around the world put in place administrative processes and systems to manage student progress. These processes usually involve filling out standardised forms and instruments: managerial tools intended to increase transparency, promote efficiency and ensure fairness by applying the same standards to all. The progress report is a widely used management tool in doctoral candidature in Australia and in other countries which look to the United Kingdom for degree structure and format. This reporting mechanism requires students and supervisors to make a retrospective account of the research done in a given period. The intention of the progress report is to provide a mechanism for recording feedback and an opportunity to clarify communication between supervisors, students and the institution itself on the progress of the research. However, whether these managerial tools achieve these aims in doctoral candidature is questionable. In this paper, we report on findings from a study of progress reporting in doctoral studies in one middle-band university in Australia. We found that men and women reported qualitative differences in their encounters with the progress reporting mechanisms, which called into question the idea that these management tools are gender neutral and fair in their effects or application

'These are issues that should not be raised in black and white': the culture of progress reporting and the doctorate

    Get PDF
This paper reports findings from Australian research into student, academic and administrative staff understandings of the role and efficacy of periodic progress reports designed to monitor the progress of higher-degree-by-research candidates. Major findings are that confusion of the purpose and ultimate audience of these reports is linked to less than effective reporting by all parties; countersigning and report dependency requirements inhibit the frank reporting of progress and 'social learning' impacts on the way candidates and sometimes supervisors approach reporting obligations, running counter to institutional imperatives. We conclude that no ready or transparent nexus between the progress report and progress may be assumed. Fundamentally, this calls into question the usefulness of this process as currently implemented. Arising from this is the recommendation that progress reporting be linked to substantive reviews of progress and embedded in the pedagogy and curriculum of higher-degree-by-research programmes

The purpose of the article is to determine advantages and drawbacks of existing organizational and methodological approaches to development of accounting policy and develop optimal approach to formation of integrated accounting of interrelated agricultural enterprises. For this purpose, the article uses methods of problem and comparative analysis, method of optimization, and methods of graphical presentation of information. The authors conduct comparative analysis of existing organizational and methodological approaches to development of accounting policy of enterprise and develop optimal approach to formation of integrated accounting of interrelated agricultural enterprises. As a result of the research, the authors come to the conclusion that Russian and international approach to development of accounting policy differ from each other, but neither of these approaches is optimal for formation of integrated accounting of interrelated agricultural enterprises. The developed optimal approach to formation of integrated accounting allows unifying the process of development of accounting policy of enterprise and thus is the best for interrelated agricultural enterprises. This approach is oriented at consumers, due to which it is able not only to simplify the process of formation of corporate accounting of interrelated agricultural enterprises but to turn it into the factor of their competitiveness.peer-reviewe

Markers of masculinity in Khanty, Russian, Kazakh and Chinese folklore: Pragma-Cognitive aspect

    Get PDF
The article is devoted to the analysis of the psycholinguistic features of the male portrait in fairy tales in the different structural linguistic cultures: Khanty, Russian, Kazakh and Chinese. The choice is determined by the belonging of these peoples to traditional cultures with varying degrees of transformation of behavioral stereotypes. Traditional culture considers a man as the head of a large family, a protector, a breadwinner, a landowner with the competencies of a fisherman and a hunter, so a woman with children needs his help and care. In this regard, the purpose of this study is the need, based on the psycholinguistic features of personal characteristics, to reveal the masculine image in the tales of Khanty, Russians, Kazakhs and Chinese. The authors analyze the psycholinguistic and stylistic means of representing masculine traits in the fairy tales of these peoples. Kazakh, Khanty, Russian and Chinese fairy tales for the first time become the object of psycholinguistic characterization of personal characteristics on the example of the image of masculinity. The course of reasoning on the topic of the study leads the authors to the conclusion that the analyzed original texts of fairy tales contrast with a reliable representation of the ethnic group.  The traditional male portrait is shown from the position of describing the psycholinguistic features of personal characteristics, through the relationship of the main characters, through their external and internal speech. This approach makes it possible to identify a set of ethnic, social, historical and geographical factors inextricably linked with language, on the one hand, and on the other – caused by psychological manifestations

New insights from old cosmic rays: A novel analysis of archival KASCADE data

Cosmic ray data collected by the KASCADE air shower experiment are competitive in terms of quality and statistics with those of modern observatories. We present a novel mass composition analysis based on archival data acquired from 1998 to 2013 provided by the KASCADE Cosmic ray Data Center (KCDC). The analysis is based on modern machine learning techniques trained on simulation data provided by KCDC. We present spectra for individual groups of primary nuclei, the results of a search for anisotropies in the event arrival directions taking mass composition into account, and search for gamma-ray candidates in the PeV energy domain.Comment: Proceedings of the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2021), 12-23 July 2021, Berlin, Germany - Onlin

Nowadays, one of the important missions of higher educational institutions is the organisation and introducing students to a culture of health. The purpose of this study is to propose a strategy for the development of health-saving technologies by implementation of project activities into the educational process based on the Physical Education Department at the State University of Management for the formation of competencies in the chosen professional activity. The sociological survey was carried out among students at the State University of Management. The questionnaires included questions on students’ attitudes towards physical culture as an integral component of a healthy lifestyle. The degree of interest of the respondents in project activities in general and on the basis of the Department of Physical Education at the university, in particular, to improve the acquired professional competences was determined. The results of the study point to the need to modernise approaches to the formation of healthy lifestyle values, including the organisation of physical culture events, the development of a marketing plan to attract mass attention to the sports life of the university, where the main role is given to self-education and the realisation of the individual’s potential through active participation in university sporting life

Sensitizing Properties of Antigen Preparations Obtained from Brucella in S- and L-Forms

It is known that S-form Brucella causes allergic transformation in a macroorganism, which is manifested as delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction. This capacity in atypical variants (L-forms) is under-investigated. It is demonstrated that corpuscular antigen in B. abortus 19BA vaccine and thermoextract prepared from B. abortus I-206 in S-form when threefold administered cause marked sensibilization; while corpuscular antigen and thermoextract produced from Brucella in L-form, and thermoextract from Brucella in S-form in case of one time administration do not have such an effect on leucocytes of white mice
