    A study is being conducted at NASA Lewis Research Center to determine the feasibility of using a carbide particle strengthened Nb-1 percent Zr base alloy to meet the anticipated temperature and creep resistance requirements of proposed near term space power systems. In order to provide information to aid in the determination of the suitability of the PWC-11 alloy as an alternative to Nb-1 percent Zr in space power systems this study investigated: (1) the long-time high-vacuum creep behavior of the PWC-11 material and the Nb-1 percent Zr alloy, (2) the effect of prior stress-free thermal aging on this creep behavior, (3) the effect of electron beam (EB) welding on this creep behavior, and (4) the stability of creep strengthening carbide particles

    Processing and microstructure of Nb-1 percent Zr-0.1 percent C alloy sheet

    A systematic study was carried out to evaluate the effects of processing on the microstructure of Nb-1 wt. pct. Zr-0.1 wt. pct. C alloy sheet. The samples were fabricated by cold rolling different sheet bars that were single-, double- or triple-extruded at 1900 K. Heat treatment consisted on one- or two-step annealing of different samples at temperatures ranging from 1350 to 1850 K. The assessment of the effects of processing on microstructure involved characterization of the precipitates including the type, crystal structure, chemistry and distribution within the material as well as an examination of the grain structure. A combination of various analytical and metallographic techniques were used on both the sheet samples and the residue extracted from them. The results show that the relatively coarse orthorhombic Nb2C carbides in the as-rolled samples transformed to rather fine cubic monocarbides of Nb and Zr with varying Zr/Nb ratios upon subsequent heat treatment. The relative amount of the cubic carbides and the Zr/Nb ratio increased with increasing number of extrusions prior to cold rolling. Furthermore, the size and the aspect ratio of the grains appear to be strong functions of the processing history of the material. These and other results obtained will be presented with the emphasis on a possible relationship between processing and microstructure

    Creep behavior of tungsten/niobium and tungsten/niobium-1 percent zirconium composites

    The creep behavior and microstructural stability of tungsten fiber reinforced niobium and niobium 1 percent zirconium was determined at 1400 and 1500 K in order to assess the potential of this material for use in advanced space power systems. The creep behavior of the composite materials could be described by a power law creep equation. A linear relationship was found to exist between the minimum creep rate of the composite and the inverse of the composite creep rupture life. The composite materials had an order of magnitude increase in stress to achieve 1 percent creep strain and in rupture strength at test temperatures of 1400 and 1500 K compared to unreinforced material. The composite materials were also stronger than the unreinforced materials by an order of magnitude when density was taken into consideration. Results obtained on the creep behavior and microstructural stability of the composites show significant potential improvement in high temperature properties and mass reduction for space power system components

    Tensile and creep rupture behavior of P/M processed Nb-base alloy, WC-3009

    Due to its high strength at temperatures up to 1600 K, fabrication of niobium base alloy WC-3009 (Nb30Hf9W) by traditional methods is difficult. Powder metallurgy (P/M) processing offers an attractive fabrication alternative for this high strength alloy. Spherical powders of WC-3009 produced by electron beam atomizing (EBA) process were successfully consolidated into a one inch diameter rod by vacuum hot pressing and swaging techniques. Tensile strength of the fully dense P/M material at 300-1590 K were similar to the arc-melted material. Creep rupture tests in vacuum indicated that WC-3009 exhibits a class 1 solid solution (glide controlled) creep behavior in the 1480 to 1590 K temperature range and stress range of 14 to 70 MPa. The creep behavior was correlated with temperature and stress using a power law relationship. The calculated stress exponent n, was about 3.2 and the apparent activation energy, Q, was about 270 kJ/mol. The large creep ductility exhibited by WC-3009 was attributed to its high strain rate sensitivity

    Tensile Behavior of Tungsten/Niobium Composites at 1300 to 1600 K

    The tensile behavior of continuous tungsten fiber reinforced niobium composites (W/Nb), fabricated by an arc-spray process, was studied in the 1300 to 1600 K temperature range. The tensile properties of the fiber and matrix components as well as of the composites were measured and were compared to rule of mixtures (ROM) predictions. The deviation from the ROM was found to depend upon the chemistry of the tungsten alloy fibers, with positive deviations for ST300/Nb (i.e., stronger composite strength than the ROM) and negative or zero deviations for 218/Nb

Nuclear power has been identified as the primary source to meet these high levels of electrical demand. One way to achieve maximum efficiency is to operate the power supply, energy conversion system, and related components at relatively high temperatures. NASA Lewis Research Center has undertaken a research program on advanced technology of refractory metal alloys and composites that will provide baseline information for space power systems in the 1900's and the 21st century.     Advanced materials for space nuclear power systems

    The overall philosophy of the research was to develop and characterize new high temperature power conversion and radiator materials and to provide spacecraft designers with material selection options and design information. Research on three candidate materials (carbide strengthened niobium alloy PWC-11 for fuel cladding, graphite fiber reinforced copper matrix composites for heat rejection fins, and tungsten fiber reinforced niobium matrix composites for fuel containment and structural supports considered for space power system applications is discussed. Each of these types of materials offers unique advantages for space power applications

    Effects of thermomechanical processing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Nb-1Zr-C alloys

    A systematic study to evaluate the effects of thermomechanical processing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Nb-1Zr alloy sheet containing 0.06 and 0.1 wt.%C (PWC-11) was conducted and compared to the results of Nb-1Zr. Coarse orthorhombic Nb2C precipitates were present in all the cast, extruded and cold rolled Nb-Zr samples containing C. After high temperature (greater than 0.5 T(sub m)) exposure (with or without applied stress), the Nb2C transforms to very fine and extremely stable FCC (Zr, Nb)C dispersoid, resulting in a highly creep resistant material. Only ZrO2 precipitates were found in Nb-1Zr. The creep strength of the 0.06C and the 0.1C carbide strengthened alloys were much superior to Nb-1Zr. At 1350 K the strength of the 0.06C alloy was about three times that of Nb-1Zr, while the 0.1C alloy had about five times the creep stress capability of Nb-1Zr. The tensile strength, long term creep strength, and stability of the microstructure of the PWC-11 sheet appear to be independent of the number of 1900 K extrusions performed prior to cold rolling. The microhardness of these single, double and triple extnided PWC-11 sheets also were comparable. The tensile strength of PWC-11 and Nb-1Zr at room temperature and 1350 K were comparable
