    The Ingestion of 39 or 64 g·h-1 of Carbohydrate is Equally Effective at Improving Endurance Exercise Performance in Cyclists

    In an investigator-blind, randomized cross-over design, male cyclists (mean± SD) age 34.0 (± 10.2) years, body mass 74.6 (±7.9) kg, stature 178.3 (±8.0) cm, peak power output (PPO) 393 (±36) W, and VO2max 62 (±9) ml·kg-1·min(-1) training for more than 6 hr/wk for more than 3y (n = 20) completed four experimental trials. Each trial consisted of a 2-hr constant load ride at 95% of lactate threshold (185 ± 25 W) then a work-matched time trial task (~30 min at 70% of PPO). Three commercially available carbohydrate (CHO) beverages, plus a control (water), were administered during the 2-hr ride providing 0, 20, 39, or 64 g·hr-1 of CHO at a fluid intake rate of 1L·hr(-1). Performance was assessed by time to complete the time trial task, mean power output sustained, and pacing strategy used. Mean task completion time (min:sec ± SD) for 39 g·hr(-1) (34:19.5 ± 03:07.1, p = .006) and 64 g·hr(-1) (34:11.3 ± 03:08.5 p = .004) of CHO were significantly faster than control (37:01.9 ± 05:35.0). The mean percentage improvement from control was -6.1% (95% CI: -11.3 to -1.0) and -6.5% (95% CI: -11.7 to -1.4) in the 39 and 64 g·hr(-1) trials respectively. The 20 g·hr(-1) (35:17.6 ± 04:16.3) treatment did not reach statistical significance compared with control (p = .126) despite a mean improvement of -3.7% (95% CI -8.8-1.5%). No further differences between CHO trials were reported. No interaction between CHO dose and pacing strategy occurred. 39 and 64 g·hr-1 of CHO were similarly effective at improving endurance cycling performance compared with a 0 g·hr(-1) control in our trained cyclists

    The Kentucky Honey Testing Laboratory (KYHTL) is a new venture at Bluegrass Community and Technical College that helps honey producers assure the quality of their product and provide certification required for compliance with truth-in labeling guidelines. KYHTL is the first project to utilize melissopalynology in support of DNA metabarcoding to identify pollen in honey samples.     A proposed measurement of the ß asymmetry in neutron decay with the Los Alamos Ultra-Cold Neutron Source

    This article reviews the status of an experiment to study the neutron spin-electron angular correlation with the Los Alamos Ultra-Cold Neutron (UCN) source. The experiment will generate UCNs from a novel solid deuterium, spallation source, and polarize them in a solenoid magnetic field. The experiment spectrometer will consist of a neutron decay region in a solenoid magnetic field combined with several different detector possibilities. An electron beam and a magnetic spectrometer will provide a precise, absolute calibration for these detectors. An A-correlation measurement with a relative precision of 0.2% is expected by the end of 2002

    Progress on DC-DC Converters for a Silicon Tracker for the sLHC Upgrade

    There is a need for DC-DC converters which can operate in the extremely harsh environment of the sLHC Si Tracker. The environment requires radiation qualification to a total ionizing radiation dose of 50 Mrad and a displacement damage fluence of 5 x 1014 /cm2 of 1 MeV equivalent neutrons. In addition a static magnetic field of 2 Tesla or greater prevents the use of any magnetic components or materials. In February 2007 an Enpirion EN5360 was qualified for the sLHC radiation dosage but the converter has an input voltage limited to a maximum of 5.5V. From a systems point of view this input voltage was not sufficient for the application. Commercial LDMOS FETs have developed using a 0.25 μm process which provided a 12 volt input and were still radiation hard. These results are reported here and in previous papers. Plug in power cards with ×10 voltage ratio are being developed for testing the hybrids with ABCN chips. These plug-in cards have air coils but use commercial chips that are not designed to be radiation hard. This development helps in evaluating system noise and performance. GaN FETs are tested for radiation hardness to ionizing radiation and displacement damage and preliminary results are given

    Two-electron quantum dots as scalable qubits

    We show that two electrons confined in a square semiconductor quantum dot have two isolated low-lying energy eigenstates, which have the potential to form the basis of scalable computing elements (qubits). Initialisation, one-qubit and two-qubit universal gates, and readout are performed using electrostatic gates and magnetic fields. Two-qubit transformations are performed via the Coulomb interaction between electrons on adjacent dots. Choice of initial states and subsequent asymmetric tuning of the tunnelling energy parameters on adjacent dots control the effect of this interaction.Comment: Revised version, accepted by PR

    Nutrient Administration and Resistance Training

    Skeletal muscle tissue is tightly regulated throughout our bodies by balancing its synthesis and breakdown. Many factors are known to exist that cause profound changes on the overall status of skeletal muscle, some of which include exercise, nutrition, hormonal influences and disease. Muscle hypertrophy results when protein synthesis is greater than protein breakdown. Resistance training is a popular form of exercise that has been shown to increase muscular strength and muscular hypertrophy. In general, resistance training causes a stimulation of protein synthesis as well as an increase in protein breakdown, resulting in a negative balance of protein. Providing nutrients, specifically amino acids, helps to stimulate protein synthesis and improve the overall net balance of protein. Strategies to increase the concentration and availability of amino acids after resistance exercise are of great interest and have been shown to effectively increase overall protein synthesis. [1-3] After exercise, providing carbohydrate has been shown to mildly stimulate protein synthesis while addition of free amino acids prior to and after exercise, specifically essential amino acids, causes a rapid pronounced increase in protein synthesis as well as protein balance.[1,3] Evidence exists for a dose-response relationship of infused amino acids while no specific regimen exists for optimal dosing upon ingestion. Ingestion of whole or intact protein sources (e.g., protein powders, meal-replacements) has been shown to cause similar improvements in protein balance after resistance exercise when compared to free amino acid supplements. Future research should seek to determine optimal dosing of ingested intact amino acids in addition to identifying the cellular mechanistic machinery (e.g. transcriptional and translational mechanisms) for causing the increase in protein synthesis
